Sunset Song is renowned English director Terence Davies’ adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s Scottish novel, a drama set in rural Scotland in the years just before and during World War I. Centered on a bright Scottish young woman named Chris, the film is a powerfully moving drama that is at once visually beautiful, in its depiction of the Scottish rural landscape, and realistic in its unblinking portrait of the harshness of working-class farm life and the devastating impact of war.
Agyness Deyn brilliantly plays the lead character, Chris Guthrie, whom we follow from her days as the brightest student in her rural school to her years as a young woman confronting the devastating horror of war from the home front. Chris is a girl who dreams of poetry and of becoming a teacher, and her kind-hearted mother Jean (Daniela Nardini) dotes on her gifted daughter,...

Despite being one of the most beloved art film directors of the last 30+ years, it’s a shockingly rare occasion that we are blessed with a new picture from filmmaker Terence Davies. With only Of Time And The City, a micro-budget, rarely seen essay film, Davies saw 11 years fall between The House of Mirth and his 2011 film The Deep Blue Sea. Thankfully though, that rate appears to be shrinking as his newest film, Sunset Song, debuts in theaters this weekend, and yet another film entitled A Quiet Passion is running the festival circuit.
But let’s not get ahead of things. Sunset Song premieres in limited release this weekend, and it’s yet another stunning achievement from one of the true masters of this era. Based on Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s 1932 novel of the same name, Song introduces us to Chris Guthrie, a young woman living with her family on...

With great writing, a strong cast and a gripping story, Jack Thorne’s 2011 supernatural drama The Fades was one of the best…
According to former BBC Three controller Zai Bennett, fans of The Fades have themselves to blame for Jack Thorne’s superb fantasy drama not being recommissioned. We were too few and too old.
The BBC Three remit aimed to attract 16-34 year olds, Bennett explained at the 2012 Edinburgh International Television Festival. Because The Fades found more love among those with mortgages and middle-age spread than it did with fresh-faced teens and twenty-somethings, it didn’t fulfil that remit.
However much critical acclaim (plaudits from The Guardian, The Telegraph, some website called Den Of Geek) or however many awards (a Bafta for Best Drama, nominations for Best Writer, wins for Best Music and Digital Effects) The Fades received, the kids weren’t down so it had to go.

Dear Danny,Happy to hear of your findings, especially the new films by Federico Veiroj and Kazik Radwanski, whose previous features (A Useful Life and Tower, respectively) struck me as brimming with distinctive talent and sensitivity. I’m eager to catch up with both of these young directors’ visions, but first let me tell you about a veteran’s vision, namely Terence Davies’ in the visually lambent, deeply affecting Sunset Song. A passion project for the great British filmmaker with a decade-long production history of false starts, this adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon's 1932 Scottish novel emerges as a full-bodied reverie of faces and landscapes, splendor and pain. Taking place in a bucolic Scottish village in the years leading up to World War I, Davies’ sprawling narrative centers characteristically on a sensitive gaze absorbing and challenging a dour world: Young Chris (Agyness Deyn), a farm lass whose lucidity and vivaciousness...

From Bond to Bourne to hairy monsters and sub-humans, cinema has always loved the tube
The freshest image of the tube in moviegoers' memories is not an encouraging one: a train crashing through the walls of an underground chamber and crumpling into a heap right where James Bond should have been standing. Luckily (and implausibly), the train in Skyfall was empty: although Javier Bardem was a villain, he had at least checked the schedules to cause minimum disruption to the service.
The cinematic possibilities of the tube are as myriad as its destinations. It's a great place for action and chases (The Bourne Ultimatum and Patriot Games got there before Skyfall). It's a realm of concealment, strangeness and subterranean nightmares, but it's a refuge, too. For film-makers, the tube is also very convenient: not only does it boast controllable light and a steady climate, it can also provide a mirror image of the city above.

Waterloo Road bosses have announced that Daniela Nardini has joined the cast of the show. The actress, best known for playing Anna Forbes in This Life, has taken on the role of science teacher Esther Fairclough for the third instalment of the BBC drama's eighth series. Esther has been billed as a "passionate, driven but maverick" teacher who has an unconventional approach to inspiring her pupils. Nardini commented: "Esther is mildly dangerous with the potential to get more so. She is passionate about her cause, but unfortunately doesn't know how to encourage and promote her views without getting carried away." (more)...

Chicago – Sorry SyFy fans and those of you addicted to CW goodies like “The Vampire Diaries” and “Supernatural,” but if I could have only one network for genre TV it would be BBC America. “Doctor Who,” “Torchwood,” “Being Human” — all rule. And the latest addition to the arsenal of this great network is “The Fades,” the first season of which was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD.
Blu-ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
Paul (Iain De Caestecker) is having a bad day. He’s always been the guy who isn’t really all that popular to begin with and then he starts seeing dead people and dead, well, “not people.” The title of the show refers to creatures who have died but not yet passed over the other side. And they’re pissed. And getting more powerful and terrifying. Normal people can’t see them but Paul isn’t normal. He’s also been...

Chicago – “My only friend is either a lunatic or Heather Langenkamp.” It’s clever lines like that keep BBC’s “The Fades” from becoming yet-another teen supernatural drama (the Brit’s “The Vampire Diaries,” if you will) along with a relative consistency of tone and with some strong performances. There’s still something about “The Fades” that holds it back from the best that BBC America has to offer — “Being Human,” “Doctor Who,” early “Primeval,” the now-gone “Torchwood” — but it’s worth a look, especially for those of you know who Heather Langenkamp is.
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0
Paul (an effective Iain De Caestecker) is a typical horror hero in that he’s the guy who isn’t really all that popular to begin with and finds his awkward days even further problematic when he starts seeing dead people. The title of “The Fades” refers to creatures who have died but not...

Wednesdays are about to get more than a little spooky thanks to new supernatural drama, The Fades, on BBC Three.
The Fades stars Iain De Caestecker (River City, Coronation Street) as Paul a teenage haunted by apocalyptic nightmares and if that’s not bad enough he now started to see the Fades as well.
But who or what exactly are the Fades? Just beyond the veil of the living lie the Fades, the spirits of the dead who haunt the living. They’re all around but they can’t be seen, smelt, heard or touched by living beings. Up until now the Fades have floated around not causing much trouble to us living folk, but now one of them has found away to break the barrier between the living and the dead, which can only lead to all manner of hell breaking loose.
As the only person able to see the Fades,...

ITV’s detective drama series Vera comes to the United States on 30 August. The show which has yet to air on American network TV, is being released on DVD by Acorn Media. The drama starring Brenda Blethyn is being released on the same day as Doc Martin: The Movies, but this show is as serious as those films are funny. Unlike, Marple, Poirot and Midsomer Murders, Vera is not set in small-town idyllic Britain where every episode seems to somehow involve a vicar, a butler or a thatched roof. Instead, this show is set in the North of England, a real and gritty place.
The 4-disc set being released by Acorn Media contains four feature length self-contained episodes. The first of the four began with a shot of Gina McKee riding...

Sometimes the geek world isn't even a tube ride away for me. I live within a stone's throw of a pretty cool-looking disused railway tunnel in London's Highgate, a location which, on average, receives a new film crew about every 4-5 months. Today they're filming the pilot of new BBC supernatural horror The Fades, written by Jack Thorne (This Is England '86, Skins, The Scouting Book For Boys, Cast Offs) and featuring Iain De Caestecker (River City, Coronation Street), Daniel Kaluuya (Skins, Psychoville, Sucker Punch), Claire Rushbrook (Ashes To Ashes), Johnny Harris (This is England '86, Spartacus), Lily Loveless (Skins), Theo Barklem-Biggs (Age Of Heroes, Miranda, EastEnders), Daniela Nardini (This Life, A Street Car Named Desire), Jenn Murray (Day Of The Triffids) and Sophie Wu (Kick-Ass, The Other Man).

LONDON -- Hoping to cash in on the success of classic sci-fi revamps such as the BBC's "Doctor Who" and "Battlestar Galactica", Sky One is planning to remake cult '80s space series "Blake's Seven".
Sky has commissioned two 60-minute scripts with the intention of creating a new sci-fi series of the hugely popular show, which followed the intergalactic tales of a small band of rebel fighters struggling to evade the dark forces of the Federation.
Memorable for its cardboard sets and leather-clad arch villainess Servalan, the show was the creation of sci-fi legend Terry Nation, himself responsible for Doctor Who's arch-nemesis the Daleks.
Sky One commissioning editor Elaine Pike said "Seven" was "ripe" for a revival, which will be jointly exec produced by Andrew Mark Sewell at B7 Prods. Most recently the show was released as a successful series of audio books starring a modern cast including "This Life" star Daniela Nardini.
Revamped television formats have proved a huge success in the U.K., with a reworking of "Doctor Who" also generating original spinoff "Torchwood". But the cultural politics of revamps can be tricky, said Sky One head of programs Richard Woolfe, who two years ago abandoned much-trumpeted plans to remake "The Prisoner".
