Well, this is awkward.
Days after DC Entertainment announced its April 2015 comic book event Convergence — in which versions of its superhero characters from parallel universes are brought together to face a common threat — Marvel Entertainment has released a video offering more details about its own 2015 event, Secret Wars. And turns out that is also a story in which versions of its superhero characters from parallel universes are brought together to face a common threat.
The trailer may require some explanation for those not already following Marvel’s Avengers comic book series or unfamiliar with the original Secret Wars series from 1984. The “Universes Destroyed” caption is a reference to an ongoing storyline in the former, in which a series of cosmic events called “incursions” is responsible for the destruction of parallel Earths. “Battleworld Forged” refers to the name of a patchwork planet made up originally of pieces of different alien worlds in the first Secret Wars.
This time around, the new Battleworld is seemingly made up of a series of different realties originally teased by Marvel across the last month. (Each of the images shown in the video to populate the map was first released as a standalone teaser image with a “Summer 2015” tag attached.) Notably absent is any representative of the “main” Marvel Universe, although they can be seen on the Alex Ross cover artwork to the series’ first issue, glimpsed at the end of the trailer itself.
Secret Wars, by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, launches in May 2015.
