Update
KNYSNA NEWS - The Garden Route District Municipality issued a statement on 23 June that one (1) wildfire in the De Vlug mountain remains active and burns strongly within a deep gorge as well as on a high mountain peak.
Today's hotter weather and north-northwesterly wind contributed to the wildfire gaining momentum.
Ground reconnaissance by GRDM confirmed that the wildfire's southern flank is approximately 2km from the nearest game fencing. The wildfire is burning steadily down the mountain.
No structures are under immediate threat.
From the north, large columns of smoke became quite visible as the wildfire burned around the mountain peak. High fuel loads and recent rains caused a significant amount of smoke.
The wildfire remains inaccessible. A reconnaissance flight will be undertaken tomorrow by the landowner, SANParks, GRDM, and the Southern Cape Fire Protection Association.
The full extent of the spread and exposures will be determined, and an Incident Action Plan, consisting of offensive and defensive tactics, will be confirmed and put into operation.
Report wildfires and other emergency-related incidents to the Garden Route Emergency Call Centre at 044 805 5071.
