Brevard County high school sports teams that competed for state championships in 2023-24

The 2023-24 high school sports season has come to an end, and it was another impressive year here in Brevard County with four sports team representing the county in state championship games.

Cocoa football repeated as Class 2S state championship. Viera high had two teams earn spots in championship games for consecutive seasons and Edgewood girls' soccer team made program history.

Here's a look back at the four Brevard County high school sports teams to play for state championships during the 2023-24 school year:

Cocoa football repeats as state champion

After winning a state championship in the 2022 season, Cocoa High's football team won the Class 2A state championship again this year and added a sixth state championship title to the program's long list of accomplishments.

The Tigers defeated Bradford 20-6 in the game that was played at Bragg Memorial Stadium on Dec. 8.

Cocoa's other five state championship trophies were won in 2008, '09, '10, '16, and '22. The Tigers have also won 17 straight regional finals.

Cocoa receiver Jayvan Boggs was voted Mr. Football by the Florida Dairy Farmers organization after the season making him the first Brevard County football player to receive the honor. Boggs finished the championship season with 93 passes for 1,493 yards and 23 touchdowns. Boggs was also named FLORIDA TODAY's Offensive Football Player of the Year,

Cocoa head coach Ryan Schneider was voted Florida Dairy Farmers Class 2S coach of the year for the second year in a row.

Viera volleyball, boys soccer make consecutive championship trips

Viera volleyball made an appearance in the Class 6A championship, but the Hawks lost to St. Thomas Aquinas in four closely-played sets.

It was the second season in a row where Viera advanced to the state championship game and won Cape Coast Conference, district and regional titles.

Viera volleyball player Izzy Starck finished the year with multiple awards after a dominant season. Starck was voted Brevard County's first ever Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Volleyball. She was also named Florida Dairy Farmers Class 6A player of the year, FLORIDA TODAY's All-Space Coast Volleyball player of the year and won the title of Gatorade Florida Volleyball player of the year.

For Viera's boys soccer team, this season marked the third straight year of the Hawks going to the state championship game.

The Hawks won the Class 6A state championship game in the 2022-23 season, but this season they fell short of repeating after losing an overtime game to South Broward, 1-0.

Viera was Cape Coast Conference and regional champions this year and Gio Carneiro was named FLORIDA TODAY's All-Space Coast Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

Edgewood girls soccer make history with first state championship appearance

The Edgewood Red Wolves girls soccer program made history after earning a spot in the Class 3A state championship game for the first time ever. The Red Wolves lost to Montverde Academy in the game 1-0, but nonetheless still had a season to remember.

Edgewood once again went undefeated against teams in Brevard County and won Cape Coast Conference, district, regional championships this year.

Senior Nina Lopez repeated as FLORIDA TODAY's All-Space Coast Girls soccer player of the year and her head coach Kevin Smith was voted Florida Dairy Farmer Class 3A coach of the year.
