It has been common for Jordan Brand to incorporate the same color blocking on MJ’s signature models. Iconic colorways such as the typical Black and White usually arrive as the launch colorway. While another memorable color scheme like the Black and Red, or commonly referred to as Bred, also has its fair share of fame in the sneaker world.

But in a unique turn of events, a popular color scheme on one of MJ’s signature models has been utilized on a previous model.

The upcoming Air Jordan 6 Retro “Bordeaux” borrowed the famed “Bordeaux” colorway of the Air Jordan 7 Retro.

Let’s take a further look into the details and release information.

Air Jordan 7 Retro “Bordeaux”

The Air Jordan 7 Retro “Bordeaux” is a special colorway that was introduced in 1992. For one, it wasn’t an on-court colorway because it would probably get Michael Jordan fined for the lack of Chicago Bulls colors. So Michael Jordan laced them up during the 1992 NBA All-Star Game instead.

The Bordeaux 7 also saw an appearance when two popular MJs teamed up together in a video. Michael Jordan wore the unique colorway in Michael Jackson’s 1992 music video for “Jam”.

These limited but iconic appearances turned the shoe into a cult classic.

The Air Jordan 7 Bordeaux featured a Grey nubuck upper base with Black overlays on the rest of the panels. It may have sported a rather stealthy and subtle look, but the contrasting graphics on the tongue gave the overall shoe a vibrant finish. A wine-like bordeaux Jumpman logo on the lateral sides and the bordeaux tongue complements the design. On the tongue, zig-zag accents of black, bordeaux, yellow, blue, and green adorn the plush neoprene tongue. More bordeaux tinctures can be seen on the triangular heel panel and the huarache interior padding.

The explosive splash of colors extends to the outsole, specifically on the midfoot area. A yellow Jumpman logo on the heel finishes it off.

After its initial release in 1992, the Bordeaux 7 was placed in the vault and never saw a new release date after 19 years. It has only re-released for the second time in 2011, and for the third time in a remastered version come 2015. Despite its lack of appearances, the Bordeaux color scheme was considered to be one of the most iconic colors incorporated on the J7.

Transition to the Air Jordan 6

It’s not everyday that a previous Air Jordan model would adopt one of the colorways of its successor. But 2021 is a different era for sneakers. We’ve seen it happen in 2020 when the Hare colorway that debuted on the 7 made its way to the J6. And in 2021, another colorway that debuted with the Air Jordan 7 has transitioned to the Air Jordan 6.

The Air Jordan 6 Retro “Bordeaux” is a brand new colorway that was released last September 2021. This year also marks the Air Jordan 6’s 30th anniversary.

The similar Black and Graphite Grey color blocking graced the nubuck upper. Bordeaux accents are back on the tongue and the heel as well. Multiple perforations on the sides provide ventilation to keep the feet dry.

The rubber tongue subtly hides the different colors within the greyish surface. A yellow lacelock compensates the exterior view. It can be seen on the inside of the shoe though, the same as the colorful insole.

A grey and black PU sole showcases the visible Air Max unit in the heel. The visible Air Max was seen for the last time on the Air Jordan 6 as the next few models utilized an encapsulated full-length Air unit.

Surprisingly, the outsole on this sneaker ditched the colorful midfoot portion and opted for a plain grey rubber outsole with semi-translucent areas on the sides and the heel. A large yellow Jumpman logo can still be seen below though.

Although the release will never be as memorable as the original, it was still anticipated by sneakerheads who are big fans of the Air Jordan 6 in general, or fans of the Bordeaux 7 but never got the chance to purchase them in 2015.

The Air Jordan 6 Retro “Bordeaux” was released in the USA last September 4 in full-family sizing. Meanwhile, other Nike and select retailers worldwide are yet to announce any release information.
