Vodafone to enter broadband fray
MOBILE phone giant Vodafone is set to enter the increasingly crowded broadband market by offering its millions of UK customers high-speed internet connections in the home.
The company plans to offer its 16.2m customers bundled packages of mobile and broadband services, similar to products offered by rivals O2 and Orange.
Exact details of the proposition are unclear at the moment, but the company hopes to launch the service before the end of the year.
It has signed an agreement with BT that will enable Vodafone to use BT's fixed-line network to provide broadband services to its customers without owning the fixed-lines themselves.
Although details of the offer remain thin, the move will provide customers with more scope to reduce their broadband costs.
Orange customers have to sign up to an 18-month contract to qualify for the free broadband offer and spend at least £35 a month with the company. TalkTalk also offers free broadband with its call package, while Sky TV will start providing free broadband to its subscribers.
Nick Read, chief executive of Vodafone UK, said: 'Today's announcement is a strategically important step in the evolution of Vodafone's business in the UK.
'This news is further evidence of Vodafone delivering on its strategy and providing customers with a total communications solution wherever they are.'
