Guam Police Department Chief Stephen Ignacio welcomed 23 newly pinned sergeants to GPD’s leadership ranks in a pinning ceremony held on Friday at Dusit Thani Guam Resort’s Royal Ballroom.
Ignacio said the prior batch of sergeant promotions happened in 2017.
Of those, 15 retired, six were promoted, and two resigned.
Ignacio told the police sergeants that they would be undertaking the most important transitions of their careers.
They are expected to lead by example, and to also understand when to allow the team to flourish, he said.
“You are no longer just responsible for yourself,” said Ignacio. “But now, responsible for the men and women who look up to you for your guidance, and mentorship. You are responsible for their safety, to ensure that you and your subordinates go home each day to your families, safe and unharmed.”
Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero, Lt. Gov. Joshua Tenorio, several senators and GPD’s command welcomed the former officers into their new leadership roles.
The promotion ceremony comes days after 29 GPD officer trainees took their oath of office, the largest recruit cycle in 26 years, which is expected to address police shortage.
