Collectieve welvaart? Daar is Bas van Bavel het niet helemaal mee eens. In zijn optiek zorgt de zo bejubelde markteconomie op langere termijn juist voor economische elites die met hun nieuw verworven rijkdom het politieke en juridische landschap domineren en daarmee nieuwkomers uitsluiten.
Bas van Bavel neemt ons mee naar de vroegste markteconomieën in Irak, de Italiaanse steden tijdens de Renaissance en Antwerpen en Amsterdam ten tijde van de Gouden Eeuw. Hij toont keer op keer aan dat, na een initiële groeispurt, de markteconomie in haar latere fases leidt tot uitsluiting en maatschappelijke onrust.
Een interessant gegeven en een mooie verdieping in het huidige politieke debat over de vermeende voordelen van de liberale democratie, vrije handel en globalisering van deze tijd.

Want het aandeel van de bedrijfswinsten in het nationaal inkomen is sinds de jaren ’80 veel sterker gestegen van dat van het arbeidsinkomen. In Fantoomgroei breken de auteurs een lans voor een nieuwe kijk op economische groei.
Voor de onderzoeksjournalisten Sander Heijne en Hendrik Noten was dit aanleiding voor het schrijven van Fantoomgroei waarin zij op zoek gaan naar een nieuw verhaal voor de economie: een waarin de focus niet op de alsmaar moeten groeiende Bruto Nationaal Product dient te liggen, maar eerder op de waarde die gecreëerd wordt: bijvoorbeeld aanvaardbare huizenprijzen, betaalbare studies en een grote duurzaamheidstransitie.
Sander Heijne en Hendrik Noten betogen dat ons huidige economisch wereldbeeld bestaat uit aandeelhouderskapitalisme, waarin de winst van bedrijven wordt bepaald door de koers, die op zijn beurt weer wordt bepaald door de aandeelhouders. Als gevolg daarvan zien zij dat veel bedrijven geen werkelijke waarde meer voor hun werknemers creëren. Veel van hun werknemers zijn uitbesteed aan toeleveranciers met onderlinge moordende concurrentie met zo laag mogelijke lonen waarvan ze niet of nauwelijks van kunnen bestaan.
Waar ik vooral moeite mee had was de onderbouwing van hun verhaal over het feit dat de economische groei vooral ten goede kwam van de ondernemingen zelf en een toplaag van hoog opgeleide werknemers. Het is wellicht waar dat een groot gedeelte van de economische groei aan (grote) bedrijven kan worden toebedeeld, maar om daarmee tot de conclusie te komen dat jan modaal er dus niet van geprofiteerd kan hebben, wel een beetje kort door de bocht. Nergens in het boek wordt de koopkracht besproken. De koopkracht geeft namelijk inzicht in het reëele inkomen, dat wat een huishouden te besteden heeft. Een huishouden wat in een bepaald jaar geen inkomensstijging ziet, kan toch door een stijgende koopkracht (bijvoorbeeld door een verminderde belastingdruk) een stijging in het reële inkomen meemaken. En die koopkracht is in de afgelopen decennia zeker gegroeid.
Wel wisten de auteurs in mijn mening goed te omschrijven dat er ook andere factoren meespelen in het welzijn van mensen, zoals bijvoorbeeld betaalbare opleidingen of huizen. Voor mij persoonlijk was het daarom goed om te lezen dat de auteurs oproepen tot een herwaardering van economische groei: wat mij betreft hoeft economische groei (of zoals de auteurs zeggen: “groei op groei”) geen doel op zich te zijn, zeker niet als dat ten koste gaat van de leefbaarheid op onze planeet. Dat het anders kan laten de auteurs zien doordat ze wijzen op de opkomst van nieuwe coöperaties in Italië, Denemarken en de Verenigde Staten, die anders werken dan ondernemingen die zijn gericht op de maximalisering van winst. Maar verder dan wat vage contouren van het hoognodige ‘nieuwe verhaal’ komen ze niet. Een simpel en aantrekkelijk alternatief voor de utopie van het neoliberalisme is daarmee nog ver weg....more

Raoul McLaughlin sticks to the facts: he sums up the rise and fall of the various buffer empires, the goods that were exchanged (mainly Chinese silk and Roman glassware), where which coins were found and the few stragglers that managed to end up in China. It was depressing to read that a Chinese envoy, sent out to make contact with the Roman empire, was dissuaded by the Partians to venture further, where only a mere 40 days distanced him from the Roman border, leaving me to wonder how history could have turned out if he actually had succeeded. ...more

Het boek hinkt op twee gedachten. Enerzijds behandelt het thema's als globalisering, protectionisme, kartels en machtsmisbruik tegen een achtergrond van persoonlijke verhalen van de opkomst en ondergang van enkele grote Nederlandse ondernemers. Het bestaat uit drie delen, de start en neergang van de Nederlandse republiek tijdens de Gouden Eeuw, de liberale periode en herstel in de 19e eeuw (Willem I tot en met Willem III) en de moderne tijd (vanaf 1945). Aan bod komen bestaande multionationals als Philips, Unilever en Shell, maar ook grote ondernemingen die - door machtsmisbruik of het niet mee kunnen gaan met de tijd - zijn verdwenen, zoals de scheepsmagnaten (Cornelis Verolme) en de Twentse textielindustrie.

However, 20% or nearly 1 billion people still live in countries with none or very little growth, are experiencing civil war, plagues and other mishaps. These countries, located mainly in Africa, will stay poor if we don't do anything, allowing them to diverge from an increasing sophisticated world economy and be forgotten, with disastrous results.
Paul Collier, professor of economics and director of the International Growth Centre, states that these countries suffer from on or more development traps that - unless they break out of them - prevent them from growth and cause them to stagnate. But that is not all: even if countries do break out of these traps, they face a new problem: the global market is now far more hostile to new entrants that it was in the 1980s.
This book describes these development traps as follows:
The conflict trap: conflicts such as civil wars or presidents refusing to step down incur large economic costs to a country, reducing economic growth. In the time period immediately following a conflict, relaps is likely. Once a country has descended into conflict, the country may spiral downwards in a perpetual civil war (for example Somalia) making escape from this trap nearly impossible.
The natural resource trap: paradoxically, countries that are rich in natural resources are usually worse off than countries without any natural resources. This is caused by an economical phenomenon called "Dutch Disease", where the other industries become less competitive as a result of currency valuation due to the revenue raised from the resource. Apart from that, due to lack of transparancy and the less need for taxation from the citizens, the government is less likely to be called for financial accountability.
Landlocked with bad neighbours: Poor landlocked countries with poor neighbours find it almost impossible to tap into world economic growth. Landlocked countries are only able to trade with their neighbours, making them economical dependent on their performance. In a continent such as Africa, this can seriously hamper their own growth
Bad governance: discouraging potential investors of investing their (private) capital in the country.
From his own experience and statistical research, Collier suggests a number of (difficult) institutional changes:
1. Aid agencies (and "rock stars") should be concentrated in the most difficult environments and take more risks, instead of worrying about quick gains to gain public exposure 2. Militairy interventions should take place once a (democratical) government is austed in a coup or civil war 3. Create international charters for good governance practices 4. Free trade and preference for Bottom Billion export products
This book provides a good insight in the problems for the Bottom Billion countries, but my criticism is that it is only provided by one man (the author), supported by statistical evidence created especially for this book. Therefore I don't know how well balanced this book is with regards of objectivity. The poverty traps that are described here are certainly apparent in much of the current African countries, but it doesn't go into the underlying problems, such as ethnic problems and the legacy of the colonial exploitations, which also make it difficult for a country to create sustained economic growth.

There is a close relation between the history of cotton and the history of Capitalism. The concept of War Capitalism was created by privately owned joint stock companies forced, with much violence, local peasants into the forced growing of cotton for the European markets. According to Beckert, War Capitalism was a prerequisite of the following Industrial Revolution, without it, there would have been no revolution at all. At the end of the nineteenth century Europe had a large cotton manufacturing industry, completely changing the lives of the European people and the structure of the society.
The American civil war changed the forced labor concept in the United States and the cotton exports dropped. This forced Brittain to look for other cotton growing countries, such as Egypt and above all India, which set in motion the colonial systems.
At the end of the First World War, the cotton industry disappeared and cotton would start to play a central role in uniting the former less developed countries against their colonial masters.
Today's empire of cotton continues. Just as it happened for the last 250 years, connects growers, traders, spinners, weavers, manufacturers and consumers over hugh geographical distances in ever changing spacial arrangements. This fundamental innovation, the connection across space, was first forged by connecting slavery and waged labor in the concept of War Capitalism, and has remained at the core in the empire of cotton ever since.
This is a very detailed, sometimes bordering to the dull, history of the cotton empire. The fact that it is so detailed, may be to your liking if you have a serieus interest in this commodity, but paradoxically may cause you to lose your interest after a time. For me I'd gave it 2.5 stars....more

Richard Overy defines a few key points for this. First of all, they took complete control of the economy, allowing the economy to work for them. Second, they created a way of injecting capital in the system by introducing 'mefo's', government bonds that were used to pay for the investments, to be repayed after 5 years. By then they hoped to have reached a drastic expansion of government income (through taxes) that enabled them to repay the debts.
Richard Overy does not agree with the general view that the investments in the re-armaments was the cause. True, they did play a great part, but only after 1936, and they were not the cause of the economic recovery in the years 1933-1936. Before 1936 the bulk expenditure was on work-creation, motorisation and general construction, which already had begun under the Von Papen and Von Schleicher regimes of 1932. After 1936 rearmament became increasingly important.
Overy states that the Nazi 'economic system' became simply a part of the Nazi 'political' system, closer in character to the economy of Stalin's Russia that to those of the capitalist West. Hitler was able to control and guide the economic transformation from the Depression years, where Stalin was able to transform the economy. After 1936, the efforts of the Nazi regime to create an economy for waging war had the effect of actually slowing down recovery and growth, stifling initiative and creating business uncertainty once again.
