Louisa Patch is a single mother to a special needs daughter and runs a horse farm in Kentucky. Even though her relationships with her family members are strained, Louisa is determined to prove to her sister that she married a con artist. As if she didn't have enough things going on in her life, Louisa just might add dating to the mix and it looks like she has a few potential suitors.
On paper, the plot lines sound promising and Louisa should be a character that you are really rooting for to get that happy ending. Unfortunately, there seemed to be too much going on the story and I never really felt emotionally invested in the main character. I felt confused numerous times throughout the book because it seemed like certain key things were glossed over without a clear explanation. So basically I liked the idea behind this book much more than the actual execution.
I won a free copy of this book from LibraryThing Early Reviewers. All views expressed are my honest opinion.

Back in 1986, Eddie and his friends were just kids who liked to goof off. They develop a secret code using chalk figures to send messages to one another. But when a chalk drawing leads them to a dead body, their lives are changed forever. Fast forward to 2016 when Eddie receives a chalk man drawing in the mail. After finding out others received the same drawing, Eddie figures it's a prank until one of his friends winds up dead. With his life potentially in danger, Eddie sets out to finally solving the mysteries of the past.
Even though the idea of a group of friends having the the past come to haunt them as adults is not a new concept, the story still felt fresh and interesting. Eddie was a complex character who remained somewhat of a mystery throughout much of the book. I liked the alternating timelines and the fact there was more than one mystery to unveil. There were a few twists I didn't see coming and overall this was an enjoyable read. I definitely recommend if you are a fan of mysteries and suspense.

A single mother is devastated when her two young daughters go missing from a strip mall parking lot. Private investigator Alice Vega is hired to find the girls and she asks former local cop, Max Caplan, for assistance. With the clock ticking, the two of them chase down leads with the hope of finding these girls alive. But while working together, Max and Alice discover they share more in common than they think.
I really enjoyed watching not only the mystery of what happened to the girls play out, but also learning more about Max and Alice. I thought the two of them were a nice balance to one another and I also liked Max's relationship with his daughter. I do think though the middle of the book was bogged down with too much character development and not enough action regarding the mystery. However ,this was still a good read and I would definitely be interested in reading more books featuring Max and/or Alice.

The year is 1983 and Vanessa Williams has just become the first African American woman to win the Miss America pageant. Vanessa Martin is living in a New Jersey housing project with her alcoholic grandfather, cousin, and a father who is always working. Even though Vanessa Martin loves beauty pageants, she doesn't want to enter her middle school's pageant because she doesn't think she has a shot at winning. After a new teacher at school encourages her to enter the pageant, Vanessa soon realizes that having inner confidence will go a long way and allow you to achieve your dreams.
First of all, A+ concept of a book! It's like I didn't know I needed a book about Vanessa Williams in my life until it was here. This book really got better and better as I read and by the end I couldn't help but be emotional and proud of Vanessa Martin and how far she had come. The book really touches on a lot of interesting subjects such as self-worth, poverty, race, friendship, and having a mother who isn't around and a distant father. I loved how the author at the end of the book included some background info on Vanessa Williams and how the characters in this book were inspired by the author's involvement in pageants growing up. This is truly a wonderful book to give young girls to read to show how important it is to believe in yourself.

When Miranda was a young girl, her pregnant and widowed mother made a bold decision by leaving China and heading to America with Miranda for better opportunities. Miranda always felt protective over her younger impulsive sister, Lucia, especially after their mother died. Mental illness begins to take hold over Lucia and Miranda fights to get her sister the help she desperately needs before she is lost forever. This is a story of the sad reality of how mental illness not only affects the person suffering from it but loved ones as well.
I thought this book did a fine job in showing how frustrating and devastating mental illness can be for families. Miranda and Lucia's relationship felt realistic as it went through many ups and downs. While the main theme of the book was mental illness there were a few other things presented in the book including illegal immigration and cultural differences that really enhanced the story. I also loved how the story switched back and forth between the main characters and their perspectives.

Anna Fox hasn't left her New York City home in months. She spends her days drinking and watching her favorite classic movies. She enjoys seeing what her neighbors are up to by spying on them through her window. After a married couple and their teenage son move in to the neighborhood, Anna sees something terrifying through her window. But with a reputation as a crazy, drunk recluse, will anyone believe anything Anna has to say?
For me, this book was almost identical to the reading experience I had with The Girl on the Train. Both of the main characters are miserable depressing people and you spend much of the time questioning if they are a reliable narrator. I didn't think there were any truly shocking plot twists but each book held my interest throughout. I'd say definitely give this book a shot if you like mystery/suspense novels but give this book a pass if you hated The Girl on the Train.

Fifteen years ago, a terrible tragedy occurred.
Years later, Alison is an art teacher barely scraping by in order to make ends meet. A job offer to work at a prison teaching an art class comes up and she accepts it even though being in such close contact with criminals makes her skin crawl.
Kitty is living in an institution, unable to speak or recall much about her past. When a man comes to visit her, she freaks out over his presence although she isn't completely sure why she is so scared of him.
Alison and Kitty are being watched by someone who knows the truth about what really happened years ago. But if the truth comes out, will more lives be ruined?
This book held my interest from start to finish. You could really feel Kitty's frustration at not being able to communicate. I loved the alternating timelines and watching the chain reaction of events that led to what happened fifteen years ago. My only criticism of the book was there were a few things that I felt seemed unrealistic in terms of how they played out. Not enough to hamper my enjoyment of the story, but there were a few things that I was side-eyeing. Overall, I thought this was a good read and I recommend it to those who like psychological thrillers.

Jojo Harvey is a literary agent in London who is always looking to find the next big book and author to help further her career. Of course sleeping with her married boss might also help her chances in becoming a partner at the firm.
Lily Wright, a client of Jojo, has just hit it big with a bestselling novel. Living with her young daughter and partner, Anton, Lily wonders when her world will all come crashing down. Her best friend Gemma never forgave her for stealing her boyfriend Anton and Lily is just waiting for karma to hit her where it hurts.
Gemma, an events planner, is still hung up on Anton and now is dealing with the fallout after her father admits he is having an affair and moves out on her mother. Gemma emails her friend with updates on all the drama and recognizing there is a good story in there, Gemma's friend forwards the emails to Jojo Harvey. With both women now sharing the same agent, Lily and Gemma are bound to cross paths again but who will come out on top this time around?
I thought this was a fun book and loved how it gave a glimpse into the publishing world. The three main characters felt genuine and realistic in the fact that at times they were likable but other times their poor choices made you want to slap some sense into them. The book clocked in at over 500 pages which I think is a bit much for a chick lit book however it did hold my interest throughout.

Before setting off to fight for his country of Germany in World War 1, Johann Blumenthal gives his son Paul a beautiful music box. Paul treasures this item as he grows into a young man who runs the jewelry store his family has owned for years. But because the Blumenthal family is Jewish, the family business and their lives will be changed forever as the Nazis come into power. This is a story of what people are willing to sacrifice in the name of love and their dreams.
This was an incredible historical fiction novel. I have read many books taking place right up to and during World War 2 but was not very familiar with role of Jewish soldiers fighting for Germany in World War 1. I thought the story of Paul and Clara was fascinating and what they were willing to do in order to fulfill Clara's dream. I loved the role of the music box in the story and how it spanned generations. Knowing how history played out it made for tense reading at times but in my opinion it is a book well worth reading because it accurately shows the tough decisions people had to make during that time period. I definitely recommend to anyone who has an interest in historical fiction.

Marley McKinney is the owner of The Flip Side Pancake House in Wildwood Cove. The cast and crew of The Perishing are currently in town filming the movie when tragedy strikes. Police believe the death of a crew member was no accident and Marley goes about searching for the murderer. The list of suspects is long and includes the former girlfriend of Marley's current boyfriend. As Marley uncovers the truth, the killer just might make Marley the next victim. This is the third book in the Pancake House Mystery series but can be read as a standalone novel.
When I read a cozy mystery, I just want something that is an easy read and will hold my interest, and for the most part this book accomplished that. Marley is a likable character and the mystery of the killer had me guessing until the end. However, the motive of the murderer was a bit disappointing a tad far-fetched. The book was also a repetitive in certain instances like when mentioning food or scenes involving Marley's cat. But overall this is a pretty solid book for those that are fans of the cozy mystery genre.

After working as a literary publicist in London and dating a famous television personality, Rosie Richardson decides she is sick of the glitz and glamour and superficial people. She uproots her life and moves to Africa where she runs a refugee camp. With a massive food shortage and more and more refugees entering the camp, Rosie returns back to the celebrity community for help. This is the debut novel of Helen Fielding, author of the Bridget Jones series.
I so wanted to like this book but I just could never figure out what it was trying to be. Parts of it read like a typical chick lit novel and the other parts showed a serious side, tackling the issue of famine in Africa. For whatever reason the combining of the two different styles just didn't work for me. While I was interested in Rosie's work in Africa at first, by the last 100 pages, I just wanted the book to be over. I think this is a case of a book starting off with good intentions and a deep meaning but falling short in execution. I say pass on this book even if you are a fan of Fielding's other novels.

Saaket "Scott" Ferdowsi isn't sure what he wants to do with his life. His Iranian-American parents want him to do a summer internship which will set him on the path to a practical and stable career later in life. With his parents out of the country for a month, Scott makes the decision to go to the nation's capital to get advice from a college professor who claims to know the secret of success. There he meets an interesting cast of characters including a girl with a love for crossword puzzles. One crazy adventure after another just might lead Scott into finally figuring out just what he wants in life.
I liked the theme of this book, a teenage boy frustrated at not having it all figured out yet. While I personally would not have gone to all of the extremes he did in order to find out answers, I had to admire his tenacity. This book kinda straddled the line between quirky and annoying but for the most part it was an enjoyable read. I wasn't the biggest fan of Fiora but did feel she served a good purpose to the story. Would recommend to those looking for a young adult novel that is a little bit fun and has some depth.

This is one of those books where the setting is just as important and interesting as the main characters. I thought the author did a fantastic job in making Idelwild Hall sound so creepy and spooky and the type of place you wouldn't want to set foot in. I loved how the story switched back and forth between characters and timelines. I thought the mysteries of what happened to the murdered girls was fairly predictable but in no way did it lessen my enjoyment of this book. I'd recommend to anyone looking for a dark atmospheric novel with a bit of mystery.

Private investigator Jack Pellum's wife was murdered two years ago and he is determined to find out who committed the crime. His only real clue in the case is the suspicious man he saw wearing a peacoat and a fedora. After a local writer commits suicide, a message is left behind that leads Jack to investigating some unsolved murders that may be related to his wife's death.
I'm a big fan of mystery/suspense novels and this is certainly among the best I have read in the last year or so. I loved how this wasn't a straightforward mystery but in fact quite a few mysteries. I like how even though you were shown who the man in the crooked hat was early on you still had to read on to see how all the pieces of the puzzle would fall into place. A really enjoyable read from start to finish and I look forward to reading more books by the author.

Private Detective Claire Morgan wants nothing more than to enjoy the holidays with her new husband, Black, and Rico, the little boy they have brought into their home. When she gets assigned to a gruesome murder with an odd game clue left at the crime scene, Claire realizes this might be the work of a serial killer. And she might be caught up in ...(wait for it)... a fatal game.
This was my first introduction to Claire Morgan as I have not read the other books in the series. I found her to be self-involved and annoying. I thought her whining about having to work a murder during the holidays to be a bit much. But what really drove me nuts was the amount of times Claire and Black talked about their tabloid photos and the constant presence of paparazzi. The idea that paparazzi would be in the Ozarks during the holiday season just to catch a couple of snaps of these two is ridiculous.
With that being said I can enjoy a book even if the characters are unlikable. However, the story just veered into more and more unrealistic territory as it progressed and by the end of it I was just glad it was over.

Growing up in 1957, eight-year-old Mark Leonard has a vivid imagination. He loves to pretend he is a soldier fighting in World War II. However, sometimes his lack of attention and judgement get him into trouble. After his family moves to Massachusetts, Mark strikes up an unusual friendship with his elderly, eccentric neighbor who seems to appreciate Mark's wild imagination.
This was such a charming book and I'm not ashamed to admit I shed a few tears in the final chapters. I think part of the reason I got emotional is because you got to witness a young boy thrive when given the tools for success. It's a bit of a slow mover especially the first part of the book but I highly recommend sticking it out. I had no idea when I started this book that it would take me on such an incredible journey. It touches on so many themes including love, forgiveness, imagination, religion, and parental discipline. Highly recommend to those who can still remember what it was like to be a kid.

The Altamaha River, Georgia’s “Little Amazon,” is rumored to harbor its own river monster as well as possibly being a location for the oldest European fort in North America. This story has three alternating timelines. Two brothers navigate the river with their father's ashes and hoping to find out the truth about his death. Another timeline explores the father's troubled past. The third timeline takes place in the 1500s when Jacques le Moyne, the first European artist in North America, accompanies a 1564 French expedition that began as a search for riches and ends in bloodshed.
It's hard to write a review when you aren't completely sure why you didn't thoroughly enjoy the book. I think this just might be a case of I wasn't the right reader for this book. I normally love historical fiction but in this case I was bored during most of the parts involving Jacques le Moyne. I was more interested in the brothers and their sibling dynamics. By the time I finished reading, I couldn't help but feel like the whole point of the book went right over my head.

Ten-year-old Ben Brook is the only survivor after his parents and sister are brutally murdered. It looks like the killer might target other members of the wealthy Brook family clan so detective Buddy Lock is tasked with solving the killings and protecting Ben. Buddy soon discovers the Brook family might have wealth and privilege but they also are harboring dark secrets.
The story got off to a good start with a poor boy narrowly escaping death but unfortunately it was all downhill from there. There were just too many times where it felt unrealistic and ridiculous. The writing particularly when describing noises or during what are supposed to be tense action scenes was weak. (Chapter 10's last paragraph is an example of the type of scene you would expect in a terrible horror movie.) The one positive thing I can say about this book is there was one twist I didn't see coming but even that was so far-fetched. I enjoy most books I read, but I just did not connect with this book at all.

A community is rocked to the core when a gunman opens fire at an elementary school. First-grader Zach Taylor survives the mass shooting by hiding in a closet with his teacher and classmates. While the town and his family grieve over the senseless deaths, Zach attempts to understand what happened and why the people closest to him are behaving so differently than before. Told from the perspective of a child, this story shows how sometimes children can teach us adults a thing or two.
What a powerful and emotional book! This is the type of book to read when you are looking for an emotional reading experience. I thought the author did a fine job showing all of the different reactions people have when a tragedy strikes. Zach was an incredible little boy and you couldn't help but want to reach out and give him a hug. There were a few instances where he seemed a little wise beyond his years but it did help give the story more depth.
I think the comparisons to the book Room are pretty spot on because both books are told from child's perspective as they witness horrifying events but because they are so young they aren't able to fully grasp what occurred. I highly recommend reading this book if you are ready to tackle a book that will tug at your heartstrings.

The idea behind this book is pretty clever as Mother Goose is on trial for pushing Humpty Dumpty off the wall. The cast of characters in the courtroom include Pinocchio, Moby Dick, The Wizard, and Scarecrow. The book has colorful illustrations on each page and is probably best suited for children between the ages of 4-8 years old although some of the references might go over their heads.
