The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell

Joshua’s first review of the year

it was ok
Aggressively dull. O’Farrell’s writing is as strong as ever, but without the enjoyable gimmickry of a central device like Hamnet’s, she produces a piece of historical fiction that struggles to distinguish itself in any way.

Whatever it is I failed to “get” about this book, I’m pretty sure I could’ve not gotten it in about 300 fewer pages
