He was a doubles finalist at the Australian in 1970, 1973 and 1977 and at the French Open in 1975 and 1979. As a junior player, Dent won the Australian and French boys' singles titles in 1968. He achieved a career-high singles ranking of 19 in January 1978 and in doubles he peaked at No. 51 in January 1983.
