Abdullah al-Sallal was born on 9 January 1917 in Sana'a, Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen. al-Sallal led the military coup that overthrew King Muhammad al-Badr and formed North Yemen, a country supported by Egypt's Gamal Abdel Nasser.
