PC Crashing During Boot (No BSOD)

Tonight, my Windows PC crashed while playing a game. Just turned off, no error message or BSOD. On restart, it made it past Windows login and during the software startup it would just turn off again. After a few attempts to make it past the startup, I took the side off the PC and checked the internals for any obvious issues, but couldn't find anything.

When I tried to restart it again, it crashed before making it to the Windows sign-in screen. I eventually made it to a recovery screen and attempted to restore the system to the most recent recovery point, a few days, ago, but the PC shut off in the middle of the process. I'm not able to install any of the software to get system readings as the PC keeps shutting off either after login but before I can open any programs, or before login, even if I am able to trigger Safe Mode.

System details:

Windows 10 Pro Edition (64 bit), kept up to date

OS originally pre-installed June 2019

System is almost 5 years old to the day

MOTHERBOARD: MSI X470 Gaming Plus: ATX w/ RGB, USB 3.1, SATA3, 2x M.2

POWERSUPPLY: Corsair RM750x 750W 80+ Gold Modular Gaming Power Supply [+21]

What can you suggest here? If I can get the thing to stay on, I can run the programs and post the required files.

Hi, while unplugged from the wall and system is turned off at the PSU crack open the case and pull the CMOS battery out.  Hold down the Start Button to bleed off any stored power.

Wait 5mins and stick the Battery Back in.

Go to Bios and make sure that when you exit BIOS you are not tuning on XMP or turning on Fast Boot and any Overclocking as been set back to stock on  the Board and the Video card once get Windows up.

If Can get Windows up turn off MS Fast Start : https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-windows-10-fast-startup and WHY !!!

If can not get that far will need to have Install Media https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10 to run the Tools on the Media to try and repair when Boot to the Media.

I thought I was going to have to ask for help finding the CMOS battery, but I finally realised it was behind the graphics card! Removing and allowing the reset to take place seems to have got the PC healthy enough to finish booting up. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the Sysnative program to extract and run, and it's late now... I'll give it another shot on Friday, which is the next time I'm at home and awake at the same time...

EDIT: As I hit post, Kaspersky decided to inform me it was auto-deleting the program every time I tried to extract it... I'll deal with it on Friday!

I suggest strongly to deactivate Kaspersky if it is a paid program and uninstall it with it's removal tool : https://support.kaspersky.com/1464

and see if that fixes your issue. Remove all of it means loosing any settings, It all has to go to be effective to determine if it is the issue.

(most often it is, you would have to follow it up on their forum) Note : you do not loose protection, Defender is ranked in the top 10.

Their are add-ons that can bring out hidden controls : Defender & review with link for Defender Firewall

As well a new tool from MS : https://pcmanager.microsoft.com/en-us It does take ram to run it. It can be deactivated to not run at boot.

It is a false/positive for the SysnativeCollection app.

You have missed 7 BIOS Updates that could directly have helped your System including 1 for updating TPM to run Win 11.

A would also suggest updating all the missed Driver Updates for Win 10 that you have missed.  Do not there is only 1 version of each category, this means no further support.

As it has Win11 Drivers that are duplicates of Win 10 stuff (did not look close for dates or size) that there is no reason not to up date to Win11 except the Bios Update.

Note : I asked for removal of Kaspersky. At time of Speccy Report Firewall was still installed.  I am not joking with info, it must be removed to prove it is not the issue to your problem.  Kaspersky, Eset, Avast, AVG. McAfee all cause issues with no other options to disprove they are not the issue it please remove as was requested in Post # 4.

If had taken this to a shop they would have not asked now 2x's, It would have just been done.

Without Dump Files it is not that easy to figure out the issue.  No updated BIOS is 1

Hi, update on where things stand.

BIOS updated to most recent version no issue.

Windows 10 is updated, and system is validated as being suitable for Windows 11. Download started, but...

The PC has started shutting down again, since the BIOS update. Not clear what is triggering it. Have done the battery removal thing again, and now it really seems random - some times I'm able to use it for a complete session, other times it's shutting down shortly after boot. There was a comment under the youtube video for M-FLASH that updating the BIOS can enable Secure Boot and that it should be unenabled; should I do something about this?

Kaspersky still had password manager and VPN sitting around after I used the uninstaller to remove the program; they are both gone now.

Haven't made it through to the Dump Files check because the Windows 11 download started and then the system kept shutting off. Will try again tomorrow. Is there a way to get the download to pause in case that's contributing?

LauncherPatcher.exe indeed looks like it was connected with Midnight Suns. And, if you hadn't guessed, that was the game that caused all of this to start. I uninstalled the game before the weekend, but after the previous post. From some googling, it appears that the combination of it coming from the Epic Store (it was free) and the 2K Launcher has caused shutdown issues for a number of people.

I didn't mention earlier, but can confirm - MS Fast Start is disabled.

Will try and get the dump files sorted and Minitoolbox instructions dealt with tomorrow after work, or will report back if the shutdowns persist.

Hi, well sounds like so,e progress rather nothing at boot.

If can go into Settings -->Update & then pause updating for 1 week.  I do not usually say to delay but there is obvious update issues that need to be resolved.

That way can fix some things up so can continue with the install and then once updated fully to fix any issues that appeared or tagged along for the ride.

So there is a upload limit so since we covered some stuff and now it has changed go to your name top of page where login and then Click on My Settings then left side of page Manage Attachments and delete the 1st one so can start anew.

No Cclearner, No Driver updaters, no registry cleaners, use your M/B Support Page Drivers.  It is more the little things right now.

I already had Write An Event To The System Log and Automatically Restart checked, and Automatic Memory Dump from the dropdown menu.

So... where do we stand now? Your messages suggest that things aren't too bad, but I'm still getting occasional shutdowns, performance issues, an inability to run games that I had no issue running until this problem started, such as Factorio (in fact, trying to load the game from Steam just now caused the PC to crash again).

I've not been able to complete the Reset Base step. i've made it no further than 10% before the machine just switches off.

I opened up the case this evening, and saw that the Cooler Master was hanging loosely, and it looks like one of the plastic brackets (the top one) has snapped almost completely, and the bottom one is heading that way. At this point, I have to wonder if we're dealing with a software issue, or the fact that there's been some damage to a component (although I'm not sure how given that the PC has stayed in the same place without moving for several years until the last couple of weeks).

Plastic parts and heat do not mix.  Not at all impressed with CoolMaster myself.  Corsair are quieter.   EDIT : Corsair also has Software.

The water pump needs be snug against the chip.  As to how long you have had it no idea but sealed systems are throwaway after 5yrs though can last longer.  Maybe just sludge being piped through.

In line for a new pump due to brackets broken as possibly too tight for what ever moving of the unit you did.

So chip lets say is doing 35C, Video Card doing 40c, each drive doing 40c, PSU doing 35c, ram doing ?c. fans doing ?c = 360 f (low end of temp) = a 3lbs roast beef done in 1 1/2hrs

Get a new pump on ASAP before need to buy a chip as well.

I missed your Temp for the Chip : Average Temperature: 99 °C   Will shut down @ 100c for self preservation.  Though AMD Chips are lower temp than Intel.

Your Ryzen 7 2700X  Maximum Operating Temperature of your Ryzen Processor is 85C. That means when the CPU temperature starts reaching or has reached and surpassed 85C the Processor will automatically start to throttle (lower frequencies thus power usage) until the Temperature is at or lower than 85C

Do not turn this on until Water Pump Replaced.    Check if have money and can update the chip to max what the board will take.
