A Mexican restaurant is set to open in a unit that has lain empty for two years on Birmingham New Street. Zocalo will occupy the space where Eat4Less was next door to Tim Hortons on the busy city road.

Zocalo started out in the taquerias (taco stands) of San Francisco Mission District and serves food influenced by Mexico and American Tex Mex. The chain came to the UK in September 2023 with a new restaurant in London and its Birmingham branch is scheduled to open on July 13.

The restaurant serves burritos, tacos, bowls, quesadillas and nachos as well as salads. It has meat and vegetarian options too.

In signage on its Birmingham door, Zocalo says that it's 'generous, healthy and always upbeat'. The London branch of the Zocalo franchise was opened by Crystal Palace and West Ham footballer Jose Fonte.

That capital city branch has had great reviews online since it opened with an overall Google Reviews score of 4.7 stars out of five.

Heather Louise gave it a glowing review, writing: "Honestly best food and drinks I've had out. LOVED the quesadillas and the drinks were delicious, SO glad I came across this place and can’t wait to go back."

Richard Ashington said: "Delightful. Spicy margaritas and authentic tacos, what more do you need?" Gerald added: "One of the best burritos I have ever had. Fantastic flavours but also extremely well constructed which is key to the experience of eating a burrito. The amount of care taken in distributing the filling is quite something to behold."
