Redditch United football manager Matt Clarke has been set a trial date for charges including cocaine and cannabis supply. It comes as Clarke officially stepped down as manager for the Southern League Premier Central team yesterday(Wednesday May 15) as he "continues to defend himself".

The 50-year-old from Turntable Avenue, Bromsgrove, appeared at Worcester Crown Court on Tuesday(May 14). Clarke, a former schoolboy player for West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers, pleaded not guilty to charges.

He is accused of being concerned in the supply of cocaine and cannabis, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and criminal damage to property valued under £5,000. He appeared alongside two co-defendants at the brief hearing to set a trial date in Worcestershire.

Clarke's trial has been set to start at Worcester Crown Court on Monday August 12 when he will face a jury. A pre-trial review will also take place at the same court on June 21 in preparation for the proceedings.

The manager originally stepped back from his role at Redditch United for 'personal reasons' earlier this year in February. The club made an announcement yesterday on his future.

A Redditch United club spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Matt Clarke has stood down as Men’s First Team Manager with immediate effect.

“Matt has recently been defending himself over a number of allegations that followed his arrest and bail on February 14. Matt was then issued with a temporary suspension due to the nature of the charges.

“A hearing was scheduled at Worcester Crown Court yesterday, which followed previous appearances that had already been delayed on several occasions.

"The case was adjourned again with a new date set for June. Matt will continue to defend himself in what has become a protracted court case, well outside of the initially expected timescales.
