Andy Farrell made a swift exit midway through the second half at Thomond Park. Whether he had seen enough or if he wanted to shorten the journey home is unclear, but either way, the trip back to Dublin would surely have felt an awful lot longer than the one to Limerick.

When he left his house on Saturday afternoon, hopes were high at the prospect of a Munster versus Leinster URC Final, but by the time the Ireland head coach returned later that night, Irish rugby had been handed a sobering reality check on a day when the country’s top two provinces bowed out with a whimper.
