Jon Rahm confessed he got emotional hearing Rory McIlroy call for Europe to change its Ryder Cup rules after his bombshell defection to LIV Golf.

As the PGA TOUR Policy Board announced tonight it has unanimously selected an outside investment group to negotiate with in addition to the PIF, Rahm opened up on McIlroy's Ryder Cup olive branch.

"I have so much respect for Rory McIlroy and to have his support right away is very, very special," Rahm told LIV's Fairway To Heaven podcast. "It's almost emotional to hear about it."

McIlroy immediately called for the DP World Tour to allow Rahm to remain eligible for Ryder Cup duty in New York in 2025.

"Jon is going to be in Bethpage in 2025 so, because of this decision, the European Tour (DP World Tour) are going to have to rewrite the rules for the Ryder Cup eligibility," McIlroy told Sky. "There's absolutely no question about that – I certainly want Jon Rahm on the next Ryder Cup team.

"I'm going to miss competing against him week in and week out. He has got so much talent, he's so tenacious and he's a great teammate in the Ryder Cup. The thing that I've realized is that you can't judge someone for making a decision that they feel is the best thing for them."

Rahm said he was grateful to hear McIlroy's words.

"The Ryder Cup means a lot to me and is one of the things that made this decision very difficult for me," Rahm said. "And I've always been hopeful that if I made the step, the DP World Tour would maybe adapt the eligibility so we can play it.

"With that said, I absolutely intend to keep my DP World Tour status and PGA Tour status and be a member if possible if allowed and play more events.

"So nothing regarded to that is going to change in my mind. So yeah, I'm hoping you know, sooner than later, we'll hear some news about the Ryder Cup and we get a clearer path of how we can make things work.

"I would love nothing more than to defend the Cup in Bethpage."

What happens with LIV Golf and the PGA Tour remains to be seen,

But the PGA TOUR announced it has agreed to advance negotiations with Strategic Sports Group (SSG) and continue PIF negotiations.

In a memo to players, the PGA TOUR said the update followed a series of Policy Board meetings over the past several days "that featured a thorough review of the 'extremely strong' final proposals submitted by several outside investors.

"We also anticipate advancing our negotiations with PIF in the weeks to come," the memo stated. "Further, the DP World Tour will continue to be an important part of the process as we build toward PGA TOUR Enterprises."

The memo declined to release further details but said the Board is "very confident in an eventual, positive outcome for all players and the PGA TOUR as a whole."

The investors Strategic Sports Group was listed as follows: Marc Attanasio, Arthur Blank, Gerry Cardinale, Cohen Private Ventures, Fenway Sports Group, Mike Gordon, Wyc Grousbeck John Henry, HighPost Capital, Marc Lasry, Tom Ricketts, Tom Werner.”
