British-Italian soprano Carly Paoli said it all began at Windsor Park following her stunning performance at the opening ceremony of the Ryder Cup.

The opera singer was responding to a message of support from the Northern Ireland national team’s account ahead of the gig at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Italy on Thursday.

"Best of luck,” @NorthernIreland posted on X.

"Rome, you are in for a treat.”

The 34-year-old shared the post with the caption “it all started in Windsor Park” alongside a green heart emoji and a GAWA hashtag.

Europe have taken an early advantage at the tournament which teed off on Friday morning.

Italian TV personality Melissa Satta hosted the opening ceremony on Thursday when the hour-long curtain-raise took place in the Fan Village Stage.

All 24 players from the European and US teams took to the stage to be formally introduced by their respective captains, Luke Donald and Zach Johnson.

Speaking to the BBC, Ms Paoli reflected on her performance ahead of a World Cup qualifier in Windsor Park back in 2021 when she sang “Il Canto degli Italiani”.

"So I was on that occasion performing both the national anthem and the Northern Ireland anthem and of course I did it in Italian in a lovely blue cape – but then there was a big reveal,” she said.

"It was just so amazing they just embraced the whole moment in honest, it’s definitely the closest I have ever felt to feeling like a rock star.

"I think that’s got to be one of the best achievements in my life so far.

“I became an honorary member of the green and white army.”

The singer won over fans after removing her cloak to reveal a Northern Ireland kit and going on to give a rousing rendition of “God Save The Queen”.
