This chapter provides a critical assessment of Swedish internationalism by unpacking its social democratic roots and liberal expressions. It examines the distinct features of Sweden’s social democratic internationalism, with its focus on solidarism within and beyond borders, and the country’s tradition of neutrality, which is also linked to internationalism. The chapter also provides an investigation into the internationalist tradition of the center-right coalition government known as the Alliance. The discussion is situated within constructivist scholarship on Swedish internationalism, social democracy, and neutrality. The empirical focus is Sweden’s commitment to a more equitably distributed international income through provisions of overseas development assistance.

Sweden prides and projects itself as being a very modern and liberal society, and an integral and active member of the international community. Branding and reputation management play a key role in Swedish foreign policy as an attempted perception force multiplier and with special attention given to curating the impression of Sweden as a value entrepreneur in 21st-century international relations. This begs the logical and critical question: does the communication hype match the substance of the practical implementation of Sweden’s foreign policy? Greg Simons provides answers.

Sweden’s Development Cooperation in the Light of the Principles of the English School of International Relations2020 •
Sweden's Development Cooperation in the Light of the Principles of the English School of International Relations This article undertakes the issue of development assistance, which is one of the factors shaping human security. It is a human right, which refers to the security of people and communities, as opposed to the security of states. Also, human security recognises several dimensions related to feeling safe, such as freedom from fear, freedom from want and freedom from indignity. This people-centred approach to security has implications on how we carry out and understand development cooperation. The aim of the article is to analyse the effectiveness of development policy and development cooperation conducted by Sweden in 2000-2018 in the light of the principles of the English School of International Relations. The English School of IR is referred to as liberal realism. It maintains that there is a "society of states" at the international level, despite the condition of anarchy. The English School stands for the conviction that ideas, rather than simply material capabilities, shape the conduct of international politics, and therefore they deserve analysis and critique. The article discusses the assumptions of development assistance in the light of the English School's guidelines. The organisation and management of development assistance in Sweden were characterised in the article. The last part examines the effectiveness of the development assistance provided by analysing selective cases and the Human Development Index (HDI). The focus of the article should be drawn to the fact that a human being is placed in the very centre of the Swedish projects. The donors' attention focuses exactly on people. Similarly, in the case of the concept of human security and sustainable development, Sweden's aid policy serves as an example of actions, which are a model for other states and may be used for reference purposes by them.

Neoliberal Globalization and the Crisis of Swedish Social Democracy1999 •
This article analyses the crisis of the Swedish Model from a transnational perspective. An introductory section defines and gives analytical meaning to the term 'neoliberal globalization'. The article then specifies the relationship between domestic and international, as well as necessitarian and contingent, determinants in the crisis of Swedish social democracy.

This paper will examine the Swedish Foreign Aid policy, particularly those values it was based on. It will attempt to discover how the narrative of foreign aid was affected after the accession to the European Union and how the European values were reflected in national foreign aid policy. Since the 1950’s, the Official Development Assistance (ODA), usually referred to as foreign aid is one of the inseparable aspects of foreign affairs of the industrialized world. Moreover, several multilateral organizations, amongst others the European Union (EU), have been established to contribute to the process of development. Even though the European Union tries to represent itself in global politics as a single actor and aspires to have one common voice like in EU trade and agricultural policies, foreign aid policy differs radically from the latter. In this area, the EU and Member States allocate funds separately from each other. When it comes to ODA, Member States retain their autonomous aid p...
Sweden is an interesting aid donor to study. With a reputation of a committed and trustworthy dialogue partner with a focus on poverty reduction, Sweden is seen to be driven by altruistic motives and pushing the international donor coordination agenda. However, at a closer look, selectivity and poverty focus in the Swedish partner portfolio is relatively weak; country selections have primarily been based on historical patterns and are often contributing to donor congestion; aid motives are increasingly becoming blurred, while the Swedish aid agencies rapidly are becoming messier from an organizational standpoint, So what is the Swedish aid model, and how is it evolving? Why has Swedish aid become increasingly complex in its content?
The paper will aim at discovering the relative significance of means, versus goals, versus sources of foreign policy. Most states, in comparison to others in the international arena, are not " powerful " and, still, some conduct relatively successful (efficient and/or legitimate) foreign policies. Lacking the sources (e.g. territory, natural resources, population, military and non-military/e.g. economic strength, or great/renowned history), they can set themselves only little or moderate goals. However, as the paper will argue, the choice of means can significantly determine their success. Foreign policies are perceived and evaluated not only by their substantive outcomes (or past achievements) but increasingly also by their style, form, or message. Thus their legitimacy may become a key condition for efficiency. And asking how may be more useful than what or why. The case of Sweden is significant as the, in many aspects, small and peripheral country has been able to run a highly influential and appreciated foreign policy. To conclude, the paper will by the use of foreign-political analysis and a case study present an interpretation of the relative significance of foreign-political means for " smaller " (hence the majority of) states.

The Sweden Democrats and the ethno-nationalist rhetoric of decay and betrayal2017 •
Sweden was long considered an ”exceptional case” with no representatives of the radical right in parliament. However, the Sweden Democrats (SD) entered parliament in the 2010 parliamentary election ...
The Radical Right Populist Sweden Democrats party are now the third largest party in the Swedish parliament, and following numerous terrorist attacks in Europe and in Sweden as well as a worsening refugee crisis, the party is seeing improving opinion polls in advance of the 2018 general elections. In this paper for a class on Populism and Democracy, I explore the rise of the SD in Sweden in an attempt to explain why Sweden has thus far been an exception to the rise of right wing populism in Europe, what reasons led to the success of the SD, and what we may expect from them and the Swedish political establishment in the near future.
