The picture we can form of the Roman emperors of the 1st century A.D. can only be traced with the utmost caution. We know that popular perception of this period sees a Caligula or a Nero as true beasts in human form; this is all the more true when this view is further clouded by modern distortions of film and historical fiction. But also the power of the images created by the despotic principes of that era, which historians like Tacitus left to posterity, should not be underestimated, despite centuries of critical investigation and partial revision. The suspicion that the authors consciously orientate themselves towards fictional literature, both drama and novel, is confirmed in a number of cases, e.g. in Tacitus' account of the reign of Nero (Ann. XIII-XVI), on which the paper will concentrate. For Tacitus (and with him apparently for the majority of ancient historians), this procedure seems to be typical: a representation that does not produce inner drama with the means of linguistic art alone, but often feeds directly from the sources of dramatic poetry and the novel. Thus Eduard Schwartz could describe Tacitus as "not the last great ancient historian, but the last great ancient poet". It remains a worthwhile task to continue to pursue this obviously close relationship to fictional literature. To critically examine the representational strategies of ancient historians means to sharpen the awareness of when admirable linguistic art distorts historical truth, when "history" becomes "stories", then and now.

Die (Un)möglichkeit des Seins in Sally Perels Autobiografie Ich war Hitlerjunge Salomon2021 •
Sally Perel is a German-Jewish author and Holocaust survivor. During WW2, he tried to protect himself by camouflaging as an 'Arian' member of the Hitler Youth, thereby leading a double life as a perpetrator and victim in one person. In Perel, these two identities got along like fire and water and were still present in the same body. This article explores Perel's autobiography entitled Ich war Hitlerjunge Salomon, focusing on the representation of life experiences and the depiction of National Socialist mechanisms through the eyes of a contemporary witness. Based on theories by Theodor W. Adorno, this study analyzes Perel's text as an example of the resistance against forgetting and the conscious memorization of atrocities. Thus, Perel's text is regarded against the backdrop of Adorno's theories, such as Erziehung zur Entbarbarisierung, Erziehung zur Mündigkeit, Erziehung nach Auschwitz and Aufarbeitung der Vergangenheit. Subsequently, it is investigated with focus on the (im)possibility of existence. In other words, Perel's opposing life as a member of the Hitler Youth and a Jew but also his identification with those ethnicities are illustrated in the given paper.

The monsters of the goddess are resting here. Barbara von Orelli-Messerli (2019). Gottfried Sempers Annäherung an Salomonischen Tempel2019 •
English version (for German version below): Between 1838 and 1840, Gottfried Semper was engaged in building the Dresden synagogue, a building with a Europe wide reception. At that time, Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem was obviously not in the foreground- neither as a model nor as a research object. It was not until 1849/50, when Semper was living in exile in Paris, that he began to write the "Vergleichende Baulehre" (Comparative Architectural Science). In the table of contents of this manuscript, which was prepared for printing but never published, there is to be found an indication that a chapter on the building type of the synagogue was planned. The topic 'Solomon's Temple' furthermore appears in most of the college scripts of Semper's students in Zurich. Right at the beginning of his lectures, he made it clear that a distinction has to be made between synagogue and temple, whereby by temple he meant the Solomonic temple or its successors. In the present chapter, the history of ideas of Solomon's Temple, admired by Semper, and its effects on his architectural concepts of material change theory (Stoffwechseltheorie) and clothing theory (Bekleidungstheorie) are traced.
