Department of Management Sciences Organizational Theory and Behavior Case Study (BBA 3-D) Submitted To: Ma’am Gul-e-Nayab Submitted By: Usman Babar Atta 01-111162-109 2st October, 2017 Case Study Question: Given that the four individuals we just read about tend to be satisfied with their jobs, how might this satisfaction relate to their job performance, citizenship behavior, and turnover? What characteristics of these jobs that might contribute to increased levels of job satisfaction? Do you think that only certain individuals are attracted to these types of jobs, or is it the characteristics of the jobs themselves that are satisfying? Answers: John Bishop is an investment banker who is satisfied with his job due to which his job performance is increased, that’s because satisfied workers are more productive. He’s dedicated to his work and able to get all the work finished on time. Normal working hours are 40 per week where as John is willing to work almost 100 hours a week for the benefit of the company which means he displays organizational citizenship behavior. He’s willing to work those longer hours and put in extra effort by going beyond the normal expectations of his job. Also there is a very little chance of turnover because he’s committed the organization and satisfied employees are much less likely to quit the job. John is satisfied with his job because he’s a workaholic and his job requires him to work longer hours with a busy schedule which keeps him mostly under pressure. Also, the advancement opportunities in his filed, the autonomy/independency at work and high salary are all characteristics that might increase his level of job satisfaction. I think that only a certain type of individuals are attracted to these types of jobs, because not many people will be willing to work these longer working hours and travel around as much. It’s very difficult to maintain a work life balance in this kind of a job and most employees aren’t willing to make this sacrifice or put in all that extra effort. Irene Tse, head of government bond trading division is highly satisfied with her job and her performance at work reflects that because she’s hardworking, passionate and dedicated towards her job. She’s willing to work longer hours day and night beyond her job requirement for the organization, which shows her organizational citizenship behavior. Irene also puts in a lot of extra effort into her job such waking up in the middle of the night, just in order to check the global market share for work. She has been working for the organization from a long time and is highly motivated by her work, so she is very unlikely to quit the job. She’s satisfied with her job because her work is very challenging, how the stock market can go from very high to recession levels quickly and it becomes a challenge for her to work in such conditions. Also she’s a workaholic and more than willing to work extreme hours day and night for the job. Lastly, the flexibility to even work from home and all the stimulating characteristics of her job contribute to the increased levels of satisfaction for her. These jobs are highly time consuming, often very stressful and these sorts of jobs keep the employees away from their families. It becomes very difficult to work extreme hours, put in all that extra effort and also maintain a work life balance. Thus, only certain individuals are attracted to these types of jobs. Tony Kurz is a managing director, very satisfied with his job due to which he brings excellent job performance. Even after dealing with jet lag and having mostly to sleep on the plane, he’s able to reach everywhere on time and get the work done. He’s neutral about citizenship behavior and does not seem to outperform himself in any or go beyond the normal expectations of his job. Although his hectic work schedule makes it difficult for him to maintain his relationship, he won’t quit the job because of all its benefits. Tony is satisfied with his job because he’s working at a good position, gets high amount of salary and there are various opportunities that come with his line of work. For example, he gets to travel to exotic locations all over the world. The significance of his job is also an important characteristic that increases his level of satisfaction because his work in a very crucial for the organizations success, since there funds for real estate depend on it. These kinds of jobs are not for everyone, most people are more satisfied being stationed at one place rather than having to travel around all the time. Also not everyone is capable of handling this kind of heavy workload all the time. Mostly people willing to work these jobs are workaholic and give higher priority to professional career than their personal life. David Clark is the vice president of global marketing; he’s satisfied with his job and performs well at work. He is able to keep up with all the updates, reply to numerous messages and coordinate well with others. He’s also neutral about organizational citizenship behavior and does not come out with voluntary positive exposure to others or put in any extra effort beyond his job description. David Clark is satisfied because of the perceived demand for his job to others. He gets to travel around the globe to promote the channel and also gets a large amount of salary. That is also the reason why, he is unwilling to quit the job. I think that the characteristics of this job are satisfying enough in order to appeal to a lot of people. The job is highly paid, you get to travel all over the world and also the working hours are very suitable for most people. People will be able to spend time at home and maintain their work life balance. David himself also said that “there are plenty of people who would love to have this job; they’re knocking on the door all the time”.
