Abstract. Trust and reputation are vital concepts in multi-agent systems where diverse, self-interested agents interact in pursuit of their own goals. While much work to date has focussed on enabling agents to form beliefs about the trustworthiness of potential delegation partners, the problem of deciding to trust on the basis of such beliefs has received relatively little attention. Without a model of trust decision, agents cannot take into account the risks involved in delegation.

One of the fundamental notions in a multiagent system is that of delegation. Delegation forms the foundation for cooperation and collaboration among the members of a multiagent system. In diverse environments such as those formed by open multiagent systems, the various members constituting the environment are customarily alien to one another. Delegation decisions in such environments are necessarily of a nontrivial nature owing to the fact that there is a lack of strong basis on which such a decision can be predicated. Trust is a primary social notion providing a foundation for dealing with disparateness in virtual societies. Trust facilitates de-alienation of the otherwise mutually unfamiliar components of a virtual society. This work investigates and alleviates the problems associated with delegations in multiagent systems by using delegation decisions predicated on trust.

Abstract Trust is crucial in dynamic multi-agent systems, where agents may frequently join and leave, and the structure of the society may often change. In these environments, it may be difficult for agents to form stable trust relationships necessary for confident interactions. Societies may break down when trust between agents is too low to motivate interactions. In such settings, agents should make decisions about who to interact with, given their degree of trust in the available partners.

Multi-agent systems can break interactions in distributed and heterogeneous environments. One of the fundamental challenges in such settings is that agents can enter and leave the system at will; hence malicious agents may take advantage of others by behaving in an untrustworthy way. In this case, if an agent wants to interact with unknown provider agents, they need to request other agents to advise a trustworthy provider. The crucial issues are then how to rely on the information provided by advisor agents. A trust mechanism was proposed that measures and analyzes the trust value of advisors. In fact, the proposed mechanism measures the belief and disbelief value of each advisor in multi-agent environments utilizing reliability/ unreliability, reputation/disrepute of each interaction. In this mechanism, the aim was to select the trustworthy provider agent through an advice of benevolent advisors in which the actions of advisors are accurately under analysis. The theoretical analysi...

Abstract: We present an approach to some security problems in multi-agent systems based on distributed trust and the delegation of permissions, and credibility. We assume an open environment in which agents must interact with other agents with which they are not familiar. In particular, an agent will receive requests and assertions from other agents and must decide how to act on the requests and assess the credibility of the assertions.
