Leaked PS5 Pro specs suggest RDNA4-based Ray Tracing improvements

Not much is officially known about Sony’s PS5 Pro, but a new set of specs has leaked that may give consumers an idea of what to expect. One notable highlight suggests that the PS5 Pro will have Ray Tracing improvements that come from the RDNA4 architecture. However, the console’s GPU architecture will reportedly be RDNA3. It’ll use either 56 or 60 compute units depending on the leak.

Two recent leaks from different sources point to one or the other. As VideoCardz notes, a user on X  that goes by Kepler suggests that the compute units will be set at 60. But the more detailed leak from ResetEra with a long list of specs suggests that it’ll be 54 compute units.

Could leaked PS5 Pro specs be pointing to

Viola, as the APU is called, will have a CPU based on AMD’s Zen2 architecture, with the GPU being an RDNA3/RDNA4 hybrid. This combination will place most of the graphics processing on the RDNA3 tech while RDNA4 will handle the Ray Tracing improvements. Perhaps these improvements could mean that the PS5 platform would deliver ray tracing with 60 frames per second.

This is technically possible now with the PS5. But in games that offer a “Performance Mode” for the faster 60 frames per second, the resolution isn’t really at full 4K. More powerful hardware, like the RDNA3/RDNA4 GPU, could allow for full 4K with faster frames instead of having to choose between the two. This is all speculative of course.

Specs have not been confirmed

Sony has yet to confirm that the specs in this leak are accurate. And that’s to be expected considering that the PS5 Pro hasn’t been confirmed by Sony yet either. But Sony was rumored to already have the PS5 Pro in development as early as March of this year. Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson also states on Kepler’s leak that Sony was expecting PS5 Pro specs to leak this month. Due to the company sending out PS5 Pro development kits to third-party studios.

In addition to some of the above-mentioned specs, the PS5 Pro is also rumored to be coming with 16GB of GDDR6 RAM, and Sony could be looking to reveal the console in September of 2024. You can view the full set of leaked specs in the image below.
