Jabba's Palace depicts the Star Wars scene where Princess Leia attempts to infiltrate Jabba the Hutt's palace in order to rescue Han Solo, who is imprisoned in carbonite. It's a well-done, atmospheric set that's fun to build, with excellent minifigs and good playability.

The minifigs in this set are great. You get Leia in her Boussh bounty-hunter disguise, Chewbacca (complete with chains), Han Solo (who snaps into a great carbonite piece imprinted with his outline), Bib Fortuna (Jabba's majordomo), Oola (the green-toned dancer), and a Gamorrean guard. There are also two unique figures -- Jabba the Hutt himself (a wonderful model), and Salacious Crumb (his capering little monkey-like creature). Finally, there is a small build for a B'omarr Monk spider-droid.

The palace build itself is divided into sections, each of which has its own polybagged pieces, making it easier to find the pieces you need (and to limit the mess created, if you're a parent who cares about such things). The build itself is quite straightforward, mixing regular Lego System elements with a few Technic parts. It is interesting and enjoyable without being challenging. Like most current-generation Lego sets, there are lots of fine, thoughtful details that you'll notice while you'll building the set, but which aren't easily seen once it's completed -- evidence of excellent design quality (and if you're a parent, a good reason why you should let your kids built the set themselves rather than being tempted to do it for them).

First, there's the entrance area; it has a blast door that can be raised and braced into place (and also dropped with a satisfyingly heavy thud), and the door is guarded by a pair of guns that can be aimed. There's a lookout tower above the entrance that provides a little extra play area and storage racks for items. The main part of the build is Jabba's throne room. It features a moving platform that Jabba sits on, that can be moved forward and backwards, revealing a hidden storage area beneath it, along with the trap door that would be used to drop someone into the rancor pit. There's a rotating mount point for Han Solo's carbonite prison (so you can "free" him by flipping the piece around), along with a fair amount of decorative interior detail that does a great job of replicating the scene from the movie. The roof completes the build, and has a flick-fire missile mounted on its top; the roof can be easily removed to facilitate easier play with the interior.

Although this set is relatively expensive for the number of pieces contained within (compared to the Lego average), the pieces tend to be larger ones, and the unique figures certainly justify the additional cost. This is a fantastic set for kids who want to re-enact the movie scene or are otherwise looking for a play-heavy set (the construction is durable and will hold up to enthusiastic play), or for Star Wars fans who want to build this set for display. If you're going to get one current non-ship Star Wars set, this should be it. Recommended for everyone who loves Star Wars and Lego, especially if you can get this set at a discount.

Great set, but SO expensive! The kids loved that it attaches to the Rancor's pit so well. And it was not at all difficult to do.

I bought this for my 11 year old grandson and he just loves it. It appears to be a challenge but not too hard and its large so it will take a bit of time to construct it. The characters are really cute. That ugly Jabba the Hut is a riot. I know its pricey but they do last forever. I think anyone who loves Star Wars will just love this addition. I heard that there is some controversy about the structure that this guy lives in but I didn't see it for a moment. It just looks like a toy house that is typical of a Lego set. If you have the cash, buy it. I don't think you will be disappointed.
