Hi everyone, just joined so bear with me here.
Is anyone familiar with commuting from Milford PA to the Bergen County NJ area? Namely northern Bergen county-Northvale/Norwood is where our job is located etc.
My wife and I are contemplating this move (we live in Bergen county now).
Why are we contemplating this? Well, our situation is quite nice. We are only 2 people living together, in our 20's, no kids, and better yet, we work at the same job- so commuting is no problem at all both from a driving perspective and a family time perspective (no one sitting at home waiting for the other to arrive kind of thing).
Our plan going into this is to split the driving 50/50. So I would drive to work in the AM, and she back from work in the PM.
Has anyone or is anyone doing this sort of thing, and from an outsider's perspective, do you see any issues with this such as with potential traffic/tolls etc? Furthermore, not very worried on the gas aspect. We have a very fuel efficient hybrid so at very worst we may spend 75 bucks a week in gas (currently we spend 20 or so).

It seems as if our situation is the most ideal for this sort of potential move being that, as I mentioned, we work and drive together and have no kids. What do you think about this one experts?

Thanks guys.

I used to drive from Bushkill to Wayne. It was hell on earth. I can’t imagine what it would be like from Milford. Even with a companion you’ll be trapped in your car for hours each way.

My advice. Don’t do it.

you were on 80 though. that seems to be a much more problematic road in the rush hour commute vs milford being the origin. would you say thats accurate?
i initially considered stroudsburg but will not be going down that route.

What Routes would you take? If you tell others your proposed route maybe they might have a better idea of the problems you face? It looks like you have several alternatives; but I cannot advise you on which one to take. It still looks like a pretty long commute.

I used to drive truck and after driving 100,000 miles/year; I love working for a company that is 2 miles from home! Good luck!

Why are you looking at doing this? To save on taxes?

Yes I was on 80. Or if 80 was too messed up due to an accident or whatever once in a while 46.

How are you planning to get to Bergen County from Milford? Through NY? You are talking about Milford in Pike County, right?

Lookin' at the map that is about a 75 mile commute via I-84/ I-87S. So in the best of conditions you might make it in 90 minutes if you were working 3'rd shift. But that's probably never gonna happen on 1'st shift. You also have to consider traffic/weather/snow as a major factor. Great to have a second driver, but what if one of you is out sick due to an unforseen illness......or worse yet, an extended illness?

I commuted from Milford to Morris County for 18 yrs, that was 1/2 the distance you are considering and it was hell when it snowed / road construction/ wrecks, etc and basically after a while that ride stunk even in the best of conditions. It wears on you. I had plenty of times in the snow where it took me 4 hrs to drive 36 miles when traffic was at a standstill.

I had a young couple move in next door, they had to commute to NYC from Milford. They didnt last a year and moved back to the City. I forget how long that commute hassle took 'em but they would come home from work , eat and go right to bed so they could get up at 4am for the next round.

Having a Hybrid is great on fuel but in the winter a 4WD vehicle is practically required on the winter roads and you may have to get off the hiway to take an alternate route, if you can find one that is passable.

You folks are young now but I promise you wont want to do this when you are 50 yrs old.

You have a neat idea but it is really not practical. Give it some serious thought. Take a drive from your place in Bergen County to Milford in a snowstorm and see what you think after that. There are plenty of storms coming. You know what they say in Pike County......"after Nov 15th anything can happen"

all the best with your decision.

Thanks for taking the time out to explain it all. I appreciate it so much.
We do have a 4x4 actually- big ol' 2500hd lol
But yeah, this is beginning to seem more and more impractical. I guess it was nice to dream...Our 300k home in Bergen County gets us a truly stunning home out there near you guys. I may look in Sussex County as well - still not giving up just yet, maybe I can cut that 90 min drive down to 60? From a taxes perspective we're "only" at 5k now for Bergen County. When Bergen County people hear that low of a number they freak out- it seems Milford's taxes for comparable homes are 3-5k per year as well so moving out there for taxes wasnt our sole purpose.

Milford to NYC seems like absolute hell while Milford to Bergen County seems a bit of a lesser hell lol
