I voted for NY pizza. I can make a delicious Philly cheesecake at my house. But I don't have a 900 degree coal fired oven to make pizza in.

Gotta go with the Bleu Cheese on that one.

Not that I try to eat cheesesteaks when I go to NYC, but I have ate at Shorty's a couple of times and the Buff Chick cheesesteaks there are pretty legit.

NYC's Only Authentic Cheesesteak - Shorty's

Whether you like NY pizza or Philly cheesesteaks better is a matter of taste. As a 'signature' food however, the Philly cheesesteak is the clear winner. So called 'NY-style' pizza is not even unique to NYC but is more or less the same style in NY, NJ, Philly. etc. Whereas, Philly is uniquely associated with the invention and popularization of the cheesesteak. There are very few places outside Philly and it's burbs where one can get a good cheesesteak. Believe me I've tried.

In case people don't know what you're talking about. I lived in NYC for a few years, but never had it. I missed out.

I have a general rule of thumb when it comes to Philly's signature sandwich*:

Any establishment that says on its signs that it serves "Philly cheesesteak" doesn't.

It's hard to explain to anyone who's never had one, but there is a technique to cooking the steak and preparing the sandwich that not even every cheesesteak shop in Philadelphia masters. (And yes, the bread counts too, just as the crust matters in New York pizza.)

I do, however, plan on ordering a cheesesteak from Grinders, a pub/concert venue in Kansas City's Crossroads Arts District, the next time I'm back home (planned visit: March). The section of their menu listing their "Original Philly" cheesesteaks bears this legend:

"Voted Best Cheesesteak West of the Mississippi"

and the waitress the last time I was there informed me they have their rolls flown in from Amoroso Baking Company.

After having a truly lousy cheesesteak at a place in Berkeley, Calif., that also said it served "hoagies" - then proceeded to blow the definintion of "hoagie" on its menu - I feel I need to test that menu claim. The Amoroso's tip sounds promising, though - although while good, Amoroso's isn't even the best Italian roll bakery in Philadelphia.

You live here?

D'Alessandro's is located on Henry Avenue in Roxborough, up the hill from Manayunk. It lands on just about everyone's short list of Best Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia.

*There's a small but notable band of Philadelphians who argue that the roast pork Italian should be Philly's signature sandwich. This sandwich, made with shredded roast pork, sharp Provolone cheese and broccoli rabe, is definitely more of a taste adventure than the cheesesteak. There's a sandwich shop in South Philly near the Delaware riverfront called John's Roast Pork that serves both one of the best cheesesteaks and one of the best roast pork Italians in the city - the best, some claim. And they have a James Beard Award to back up the claim.
