Afternoon thunderstorms likely in the Denver area Sunday

Severe weather is possible in Denver Monday but non-severe storm impacts like street flooding and cloud-to-ground lightning strikes might be more impactful.

Severe storm outlook for Saturday 6-8-24.

DENVER — More afternoon thunderstorms are in the forecast for Sunday and a few storms could become severe. There is a level 1 Marginal threat of severe weather on the Front Range and that includes the foothills and parts of the mountains.

Daytime heating and moist upslope flow from the east could bring together just enough to create hail up to one inch in size along with a few 60 mph wind gusts. While severe storms are a little less likely on the eastern plains because of more cloud cover in the morning and even afternoon hours.

The bigger impact from thunderstorms on the Front Range Sunday might come from non-severe weather. Localized street flooding could become an issue in spots as slow moving or even stationary storms could bring longer periods of rain. Cloud-to-ground lightning strikes will likely be numerous with storms in the metro areas and even in the mountains.

Since the storms will be forming along upslope boundaries of converging winds, there could be a few landspout tornadoes as thunderstorms first start to fire. Landspouts are weaker tornadoes that form near the ground just prior to thunderstorm development. After the boundaries get mixed up by storms the tornado threat will be limited.
