In this episode, Evan Clark, deputy managing editor of WWD, speaks with Lena Staafgård, chief operating officer of the Better Cotton Initiative.
The group offers a voluntary standard that is aimed at nudging the industry to produce more equitable and sustainable cotton, but has called on governments to step up and help mandate a better world.
Better Cotton works with stakeholders throughout the supply chain, but has a particular focus on the small farmer.
“They’re almost invisible,” Staafgård said. “They have very little power. They never get in touch with the big commercial players. They’re just producing their raw material and go about their lives. So we want to make sure that they’re seen and that they have their own voice.”
