Warner Bros. Discovery is putting some of the “premium” back into its premium cable outlet, HBO.
In a branding strategy shift, several tentpole series that had been announced as original shows for streamer Max — including the in-development Harry Potter series and It prequel Welcome to Derry — will become HBO originals instead. The just-ordered Lanterns, based on DC Comics’ Green Lantern, was also first developed for Max but will now originate on HBO.
Those series will of course still stream on Max, as all HBO shows do. But the decision to bring the high-visibility, high-budget shows under the HBO umbrella represents a change in approach to how the two outlets, both headed by Casey Bloys, differentiate their programming.
When Bloys took charge of what was then HBO Max in 2020, the streamer was to be the home of all series based on pre-existing IP from Warner Bros. (in addition to shows like...

That was a close call! After trailing in second for much of the game, Survivor alum Drew Basile managed to continue his Jeopardy! winning streak in the Tuesday, June 25 episode. And his win came off the heels of a special message from Survivor host Jeff Probst that Ken Jennings helped arrange. Basile was left speechless by the kind gesture. Jennings informed Basile during the game that Probst learned of his Jeopardy! success and is proud. “He was like, ‘What a great kid! He was amazing on our show.’ He was so delighted to hear you’re doing well here.” Probst hosted Rock & Roll Jeopardy as Jennings said, and is a “big friend of the show.” “Wow,” Basile responded to the words of support. “I don’t know what to say.” It may have brought Basile good luck, as he secured his fifth consecutive win later on. In the June 24 episode,...

The first word that comes to mind when most people think of Hallmark Channel is Christmas. The network has made its name (and a lot of its money) on its annual holiday fare that guarantees light-hearted, family-friendly fun, whether you are watching ironically or not. The patented formula of its Christmas movies is a comfort for the droves that watch every year, but Hallmark frequently gets overlooked when it puts down the tinsel and Santa cookie cutters.
This should be the year that changes, because Hallmark has one of the best shows on TV. The multi-generational time-travel drama “The Way Home...

In The Late Great, Primetimer staffers and contributors revisit shows that were cut short but still cast a long shadow over the TV landscape.
The trend has many names: "cozy,” “comfy” or “comfort,” “nicecore.” Whatever you want to call it, in recent years, there’s been a preponderance of television that emphasizes good feelings over high-stakes storylines. It’s not as if they’re devoid of tension or darkness, but series like Ted Lasso and Abbott Elementary are praised and popular mainly for their overwhelming pleasantness. I would argue that this inclination is also part of the reason for the success of The Bear, believe it or not. While it is full of suspense and stress, many of that show’s most lauded moments happen when it slows down — think of Season 2's “Honeydew,” which focuses on a character quietly honing his skills as a baker, or the lovely, empathetic conversation that closes “Forks.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Interview With the Vampire Season 2 Episode 7, “I Could Not Prevent It.”] Madeleine was determined to survive. The dressmaker, played by the captivating Roxane Duran, met a tragic fate in Interview With the Vampire Season 2 Episode 7 alongside her immortal companion Claudia (the powerful Delainey Hayles). Madeleine’s life before Claudia was filled with darkness. From tuberculosis wiping out her entire family to living through the German occupation in World War II, hardship was the norm. Profound desperation during the war led to Madeleine’s brief affair with a Nazi, Duran tells TV Insider. She says this relationship “is not about love” at all, but rather, it...

For years, The View host Whoopi Goldberg has always made a point of never saying Donald Trump‘s name on air, so when she accidentally name-dropped the former President, she reacted viscerally – and appeared to spit. On the Tuesday, June 25 broadcast of the talk show, the ABC co-hosts looked ahead to the upcoming debate between President Joe Biden and Trump – specifically the accusations that Biden has been using drugs to prepare for the event. The accusations have been promoted and spurred on by Trump both in speech and online. The White House denied Trump’s request for a drug test ahead of the upcoming debate scheduled for Thursday, June 27. Goldberg questioned if such “attacks” should even be taken so seriously. “I think it would be remiss of us to not say, Joe Biden knows how to do this. He knows how to do this, he’s quite good at this,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Dark Matter Season 1, Episode 8 “Jupiter.”] Is physics professor Jason Desson (Joel Edgerton) about to have his happy ending? Maybe. At least, that’s what it looked like at the end of the June 19 episode of Apple TV+‘s sci-fi thriller Dark Matter when Jason met up with wife Daniela (Snowpiercer’s Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley) at Chicago’s landmark sculpture known as The Bean. Jason used the safe word with Daniela — “Jupiter” — and Daniela looked pretty sure about the Jason she chose, after having escaped three other alternate versions of her husband, including the original kidnapper who had been living in her home that she pushed down the basement stairs (Heck yes!). But this action series, based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 bestselling novel, isn’t over yet and only one Jason can rule them ...

In case the colorful fashion, the landlines, and the Zima didn't remind you That ’90s Show takes place in the final decade of the 20th century, you'll hear one of the most notorious ’90s needle drops of all time in the opening minutes of the sitcom’s second part, out June 27: “Macarena.”
But while the earworm will most certainly inspire a Pavlovian dance response as you watch, the tune provides an atypical laundry-folding soundtrack as Kitty Forman (Debra Jo Rupp) awaits the arrival of her granddaughter, Leia (Callie Haverda), for her annual vacation in the summer of 1996.
“The ‘Macarena,’ we had to hit that one right away,” teases executive producer and showrunner Gregg Mettler. But there’s a careful calculation for how much ’90s nostalgia goes into each episode of the sitcom, and Mettler tells Tudum that “less is more.”

“Baby Reindeer” almost had a very different cast.
In a recent Variety report, a source claims that series creator/writer/star Richard Gadd’s CAA agents “pushed aggressively” for Melissa McCarthy to be cast as stalker Martha in the Netflix show that is billed as being “based on a true story.”
Per Variety, “A knowledgeable source says McCarthy met Gadd about the role but ultimately wasn’t interested. […] Those familiar with the production say Gadd micromanaged casting and fired his CAA agents after they and Netflix pushed aggressively for Melissa McCarthy to be cast as Martha.”
Jessica Gunning was later cast in the role.
The casting news comes as part of accusations lodged against Gadd alleging he manipulated his creative control to prey on potential love interests. “Baby Reindeer” production company Clerkenwell Films investigated and cleared Gadd of wrongdoing after the circulation of an actress’ claims on social media that...

Talk about a touchdown for Hallmark and NFL fans! Tyler Hynes, Hunter King, and Ed Begley Jr. will star in the new Hallmark Channel original movie Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story, which will premiere during the network’s 15th annual Countdown to Christmas programming event. The movie will begin production next month and will film entirely in Kansas City, Missouri, including the Geha Field at Arrowhead Stadium. This will mark the first time the loudest stadium in the world has been used as a filming location in a Hallmark movie. Holiday Touchdown follows Alana Higman (King), who is sure that her family’s lifelong history as Kansas City Chiefs superfans makes them a frontrunner to win the team’s “Fan of the Year” contest. Derrick (Hynes), Director of Fan Engagement, is tasked with evaluating how Alana and her family stack up against the other two finalists. As the pair spends time together,...

Christmas is coming early for Swifties who are also fans of Hallmark Channel movies. This time for real.
This “Countdown to Christmas” season, the Hallmark Channel will debut new original movie “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story.” We wonder where they got the inspiration for this one… (Hallmark Channel is now calling its fans “Hallmarkies.”)
The made-for-tv movie is not a total ripoff of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s romance, which dominated tabloid headlines, late-night talk shows, and much of the NFL season coverage in late 2023 and early 2024. The Chiefs, with Swift in attendance, won Super Bowl Lviii in February, repeating as champions. Thanks to a great game (late) — and those Trayvis stans — the 2024 Super Bowl was the most-watched TV program since the 1969 moon landing. “Holiday Touchdown” probably won’t amass 123.4 million viewers.
