Be thankful for what we got.. seasons 1 through 3. Fascinating program. The story of Ragnar, the acting of Travis Fimmel and the extraordinary detail made the first three seasons compelling. Tostig. My god, the guy had what less than twenty lines and stole the show. And then the bottom fell out of the show. Supporting characters were tasked with carrying the show and they weren't up to it. What was an epic story morphed into an epic cluster____ of pointless events, battles and internal squabbling to the point where I don't care who wins or loses anymore. And I"m sick of Lagertha and Boneless. Oddly enough, a secondary character, King Harald, had potential. Too bad he's sidelined as semi-comedic material. Excellent actor.

But give the show credit -- remember how great the first three seasons were.

Absolutely Amazing!!

Vikings is one of the rare shows where it is never dull and full of entertainment. It's a show with plenty of violence, drama, mystery, etc. The character development is what keeps the show fresh and interesting. It takes you into this world of Vikings and keeps you intrigued throughout the series. I just loved this show so much and even though it hasn't been gone that long I already miss it! Obviously, the first four seasons were better with Travis Fimmel as Ragnar, it was actually one of the best shows on tv with him, but the show was still pretty good after he left (as long as you try not to compare it to those first 4 seasons). It was brought to Amazon Prime Video for the final ten episodes and really got back on track to end the series on a real high note!

Ragnar Lothbrook
avalosraul16 July 2021
Seasons 1-3 and the 2nd half of season 4 are the best this show has to offer. But the rest is easily forgetful I do not remember a single scene that moved me or stuck with me. Ragnar was what made this show great. Vikings is brutal and has some very dark and complex moments. First 3 seasons 10/10 season 4 7/10. Spinoff would have been better for the sons. Ragnar deserved better and Michael Hirst didn't execute.

The Norse Remembers.
southdavid8 January 2021
With the release of the last half of the 6th season we finished the epic seven-year saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons. Whilst I am not sure I'd consider "Vikings" to be amongst the very top tier of shows I've watched in my lifetime; I've certainly enjoyed my time with the Norsemen.

Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) is a farmer and raider who becomes a legendary figure amongst the Viking people by establishing consistent navigation techniques and leading successful raids on the various Kingdom's that would become Britain. Rising to become King, his legacy is cemented by the actions of his sons, particularly Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) and Ivar The Boneless (Alex Hogh Andersen) who would rule countries and influence politics far from their homelands.

The first few episodes don't really convey the scale of the ones that would eventually follow. There are lots of great characters that appear across the run but at the start the show rests on Travis Fimmel's shoulders and he's really good. Ragnar is not a good man, or father and the danger of the character always is present in Fimmel's wild eyes but you still understand why his men fought for him and elevated him so highly that his sons could trade of his name. His sons each derive some aspect of him, Ubbe played by Jordan Patrick Smith is the explorer he wanted to be, Bjorn the noble King, Hvitserk, played by Marco Ilso, is the sufferer and addict and Ivar the vicious warlord. I don't really think any of the characters across the run were poorly performed and it's interesting to look back now and remember some of those characters and the stories that only played for a while.

The scale of the show gets bigger and bigger and the battle scenes more and more expansive. I don't feel as strongly as others that the show drops off as it refocuses on the sons of Ragnar but I would accept that some of the stories don't quite end at their natural point or have deviations that don't go anywhere.

It's not, for me, in that top tier "West Wing", "Game of Thrones", "The Wire" category, but it's not far below and I'm happy to have visited Kattegat for these last few years.

Loved It!!

I absolutely loved Vikings and I already miss it. Obviously, the first 4 seasons were a lot better with Travis Fimmel as Ragnar, it was actually one of the best shows on tv when he was still on it, but the show was still pretty good even after he left...as long as you try not to compare it to those first four seasons. When Ragnar was still part of the show it was one of the best shows on tv but even though it went downhill a little bit after he left, it was still a pretty good show worth watching. I thought these last 10 episodes on Amazon got back on track and ended the series on a real high note though!

First four seasons are 9/10 and last two are 2/10
poetictank11 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The show completely dies in season four. SO MUCH WASTED POTENTIAL in the final seasons with Ragnar's sons, more specifically, Ivar. In history, he was the last true Viking to battle the heathens and try to take over their colonies. It started off so promising, too. Bjorn becomes only good for trying to bed every semi-attractive woman who carries a sword. It turns into stupid drama and begins to more so ressemble a cable TV soap opera.

I'm finishing it because there's only season 6 left anyways. It was a great show for its majority, and I hope that season 6 can redeem itself.

Poor casting and not enough direction from the writers in the later seasons is what ruins it.

A series that was differentiated from another great series
martin_merelesc21 September 2022
It is difficult to end a series like this to everyone's liking. Naturally, there are imperfections and successes; there are 79 episodes and calibrating and measuring each and every one of the details so that they fit together, so that there is no dissonance, so that the end, ultimately, of each character and plot makes sense, is something that does not usually happen. I particularly like the closure of the protagonists; there are details, however, that resonate with a shoehorn. The English creator was determined from the outset to differentiate himself from series such as Game of Thrones, with which he has been regularly compared (something I have never understood), and to adopt a historical vision in which to house fiction.

Epic story well done
JohnM6315 August 2022
The series series originates in a true love for storytelling and cinematography. The story is epic with some roots in history. You may even see some references to issues in our current society, may it be because some themes are universal: love and hate, war and peace, the quest for meaning and purpose. This series has it all and has been photographed excellently.

Superb...until the producers didn't know when to end it
grantss8 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
(Review updated after Season 6).

The story of Ragnar Lothbrok who, in the 9th century, rises from simple farmer to King of the Vikings. Along the way he deals with internal crises, family issues and foreign foes, and discovers a few new lands (and invades them, of course)...

Superb drama series, for nearly four seasons. Takes about three episodes to hit its stride and from then never slows down. After that it is a non-stop roller coaster ride of battle scenes, internal and external politics and relationship dramas, all with a large dollop of actual history thrown in. Admittedly, some of the history has been tweaked for dramatic effect, but the basic plot is reasonably accurate.

Some good humour too and solid performances.

The pinnacle was probably Season 2 where the mix between action and drama was perfectly balanced. Season 3, while still brilliant, edged more towards the action side. By Season 4A, the dial was firmly over on the action side, though the plot was still quite tight.

Season 4B was necessary from a closure point of view, and is reasonably emotional for that reason. However, the writing in this season becomes quite sloppy, with incongruous sequences of events and characters behaving inconsistently.

The other problem is that the season goes on for several episodes beyond its natural ending. I could see the logic to this - a sort of action and reaction effect and revenge theme - but with the main character gone and the only other character worth supporting (Lagertha) hardly featuring, there is nobody to root for.

What's worse, one of the new supposed "heroes", Ivar, is pretty obnoxious, something like a cross between Damien of the Omen and Kevin in We Need To Talk About Kevin. Very little engagement left from me, and I was left only watching for the battle scenes (which are very good, by the way).

And now, in a jumping the shark moment that lasts 40 episodes, we have Seasons 5 and 6. The show should have ended after Episode 15 of Season 4. Not that the remainder of S4 was bad, it just wasn't necessary or of the same quality that came before.

Season 5 was wholly unnecessary and, to crown it all, the writing gets quite weak and sloppy. Engagement is almost non-existent as there's no main characters to root for. Lagertha would be one to support but her screen time is limited and her character gets very one-dimensionally drawn in Season 5. Furthermore, direction becomes pretty much style over substance.

Season 6 was more of the same.

Ending the series after S4 E15 would have seen this series remembered very fondly and hailed as a dramatic masterpiece. Instead, Vikings joins the list of series that history will remember with less reverence.

Season ratings: S1 9/10, S2 10/10, S3 9/10, S4 8/10, S5&6 5/10.

Hard and cruel, but somehow tempting way of life
Bored_Dragon19 January 2018
I'm not a fan of historical and quasi-historical films and series, so I didn't have big expectations. But first season instantly bought me. It's completely different than anything I ever saw and there's more dead than in Game of Thrones. Now I've finished the second season and the series is getting even better. It seems to me that there's also more intrigues and twists than in GoT. Acting and characterization are excellent and action scenes and fights are very realistic and convincing. Story is becoming more and more complicated and tense, and not only will it keep you focused, but also breathless. After first season I rated it eight out of ten. Now I'm raising to

Seasons 1-3 are a must see, the rest not so much
memayrinck18 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Vikings is fresh, smart, as historically accurate as it can be considering the people they're talking about had runes as an alphabet, but the charisma of the story was the rise of Ragnar and his precise & quiet war strategy and tactics. Once that was gone and a bunch of Disney kids took over, it fell flat and stale. Unfortunate really because seasons 1-3 are possibly the beat thing on TV since The Sopranos. Killing Athelstan was also a bad choice because his dynamic with Ragnar was the real love story of the show. Still, a big fan, but now I watch it more out of obligation then pleasure, which is a sign that maybe I should stop? Tell me Seer! Should I give up on Vikings?

The Gods Heard Me!
pianys4 March 2013
I've been looking forward to a viking film or TV series for many years, and when my wishes were finally granted, I was very worried that this production was going to be total crap. After viewing the first two episodes I do not worry about that anymore. Thank you, Odin:-)

As a person of some historical knowledge of the viking era, I can point out numerous flaws - but they don't ruin the story for me, so I will let them slip. Historical accounts about those days are, after all, not entirely reliable.

Happy to see Travis Fimmel in a role that totally suits him. A physical and intense character, with that spice of humor that is the viking trademark from the sagas. Gabriel Byrne plays a stern leader, that made me think of him in "Prince of Jutland", and Clive Standen seems like he's going to surprise us.

Been pondering the Game of Thrones comparison, since I love that show too, but in my opinion Vikings has its own thing going on. Way fewer lead characters to begin with, and also a more straight forward approach. Plenty of room for more series with this high class!

Can I wish for more than the planned nine episodes, PLEASE!!!

From an excellent TV show to an average one
nilsonsc16 April 2018
The first 3 seasons are excellent. I used to recommend this series to all my friends. Few episodes, good story, unique characters. Then the fame came and brought greed. History Channel decided to double the earnings by doubling the number of episodes in season 4. Without enough content to fill the episodes, the show became slow and boring. I decided to stop watching it by the end of season 4 because I realized it was declining. I don't want to screw up my good memories.

A Medieval "Godfather"
loufalce17 March 2013
Maybe it isn't real 100 percent history. Some liberties were taken, but for the most part is seems to ring true.At times it almost seems like a contemporary crime drama, but the facts are there-the raids on British monastaries that did occur in the late 8th century, a fairly realistic depiction on what Norse life was probably like at this timeline, the spectacular countryside with its majestic forests and rivers, and the depictions of the Vikings themselves. Savage, eager to loot and plunder, but nevertheless bound by a sort of code of honor. Their acts are savage and the chieftan seems more like a medieval Godfather who uses his power for his own personal gain and who is not above killing somebody on the spot if he is displeased with his actions. The storyline is fairly literate and not the usual mindless adventure that too many of these movies present to us, and the characters are convincingly drawn and likely motivated. The music is good and the full size replicas of the ships are very accurate. Even the deliberate pace works to its advantage, we are never rushed and the story develops as it moves along. It is never dull and there is plenty of interest to engage the viewer. However, if you are put off by graphic violence , don't watch it. Those times were fairly brutal. Fine entertainment . Enjoy it.

Great Show
Hegemont20 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's a great show with good casting, writing, storytelling, shooting, visual and sound effects. It is not %100 historically accurate but it pushes you to search the real sagas and imagine the real people as you watch the series, which is a experience that makes you feel you are going back in time. It also makes you think how current life and viking age is different in every way. I would also say that they shouldn't ended the Ragnar-Athleston relationship, it was the only relationship that made me feel the real love to a friend. I also would have added more fun and supernatural elements to the show, which I believe could add more dynamics to story.

Not a History lesson
kosmasp19 January 2021
Well I doubt that any Historian would find this to be 100% accurate. And that is not just the fact that you can hear the main characters mostly talk in english, instead of their native language. But the show makes it clear that it is just when eveyone understands each other that we as viewers also hear them talk in english. Otherwise you'll get different languages thrown at you.

But let's start from the beginning or season 1 here. After all the praise I was hearing over the years, I was a little bit underwhelmed by it to be frank. Don't get me wrong, it already has many of the ingredients that made it a great show (one of them being amazing battle and fight scenes), but it felt like this was a contained world. The scope seemed miniscule. But that is of course a bit harsh. Considering what shows cost and then making a period piece like this, with costumes and ships and all that (not that many in season 1 as I said, but it made sense from a budget point of view ... you never know if this takes off or not). One thing it got right from the start is the main villain it starts off with! You can never go wrong - Garbiel Byrne! Fantastic actor, awesome performance and character.

But with season 2 the show really gets you, if it didn't before. More characters are introduced and you get a deeper feeling for those already in the mix (be it Floki, Lagertha or others who are not Ragnar). And what the show also does: it actually keeps you on your toes when it comes to who survives and who dies. Or how they die if they do. While Season 1 and 2 had somewhat predictable "endings" (or twists you probably saw coming a mile a way), the next seasons got better with it.

And the mentioned battles also got tweaked from time to time, especially after a character named Ivar gets introduced, but you'll see for yourself. There is a lot of mystic power behind this, a lot of believing or not ... and a lot of otherworldly stuff that keeps sort of happening. Morally you disagree with certain things, while the slaughtering was probably not seen as something bad, but just as a side product of looting and taking over land. All is fair in war and love, right? Well again, the show does not pull punches in certain areas, which fragile viewers may find disturbing. There's also a certain amount of nudity and sexual situations, though not nearly as much as I felt Game of Thrones had.

Speaking of the obvious comparisons that may come: especially at the beginning of the show, this felt more like Sons of Anarchy (no pun intended), than GoT. But depending on what you've seen and your perception you may feel different or even compare it with something else entirely.

This is not for the faint of hearted and was able to conclude in a way that may seem sudden to some, but is refreshing and fulfilling to others. No matter if I felt a bit of a slow down at the start of the final season, it picked the pace up again fairly quickly. So in the end, the praise was warranted as the story goes ... or fades ...

Trying to pretend first half of fourth season did not happen
hptmbedra10 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
First of all let me say the first 3 seasons were good, in fact the first two were just great. There is Viking tradition, there are interesting social and cultural differences between Northmen and others, there is vibrant Viking society and mainly, there is Ragnar; cunning Ragnar, who would "give far more than his eye to acquire knowledge". He is a man of progress, whose logic and wit wins against rigidity and stupidity. He is the man, who comes up with new ideas and surprises everyone who wants to defeat him. Finally, he is the only one capable of carrying this show and pushing it forward.

The third season is also pretty good, although it had slowed down a little bit, dragging the story slowly around, but who cares when Ragnar is going to raid the Paris whatever the cost!

As much I like the first three seasons, there is one thing that kept bothering me throughout second and the third one especially. Every time Ragnar kills some of his enemies (earl Haraldson, king Horik), he creates some kind of vacuum in the society he is not able to fill. Yes, he becomes earl and than king nominally, but he doesn't quite behave like one! I mean as Haraldson had been an earl, he had counselor Svein for the dirty stuff and his guard, he was a judge (in fact), blessed children etc. and all in all there was a lot of things happening around him in Kattegat. Not so with Ragnar; he is just kind of there, not ruling whatsoever, and sometimes it just feels like anarchy there, which I find not entirely plausible. Additionaly, as I have mentioned, there is a feeling of emptiness because of this, emptiness, which I am not quite able to describe. Maybe it is happening, because the second and third series already follows more story lines and can't concentrate on Vikings more, which is in my eyes a threat for this show.

Season 4 takes the good things from its predecessors - throws them away - and builds on flawed stuff of the first three seasons - which is emptiness, story distraction and fade-away from Ragnar. Starting with the most serious issue - Ragnar, it was perhaps the worst decision in the whole show to screw him up. For the entire season 4a, he feels old and tired, doesn't have any desire to explore and raid, doesn't care for his people and children much, and as if it wasn't already too bad, we have to watch him as he becomes a drug addict. This alone is just enough for me. The writers basically take the character majority of viewers cares about most and flush him into toilet. I know he must die eventually, but instead of seeing him suffering for about 9 hours (!!), it would be better to kill him off at his zenith.

Another issue, that hardly appeared in the first three series - there are many meaningless scenes which just kind of fill the time. Consider the whole Wessex feminist thing with Judith - so much time is wasted on her becoming tough and independent, but I don't see a reason why - this is something suitable for 20th century, not 9th. On the other hand there is not much explanation on key events such as why Rollo gave up on his manhood and turned into french nobleman and loving husband so easily.

The emptiness and anarchy I was talking about is really apparent in season 4. It is no more the king Ragnar and his people or the vibrant society from early seasons, it is a mixture of random characters with no depth being around. Typical ruling day of king Ragnar consists of throwing knives, ignoring everyone, doing crazy stuff and taking drugs in the shack, stalking on the rooftop and making a foreplay with that Chinese girl. Björn tries to look as serious as possible, which makes his character so flat it makes me wonder about Ragnar's successor's ability to lead the show (I doubt any of the sons is capable of that). Than the whole thing with Erlendur's revenge is wasted, as everybody knows from the start Björn will not die and Erlendur has even got no plan; when Kalf was still alive, there was a chance to take advantage of it, but now he wants to kill Björn and then will see what's next, probably.

I totally agree with others that it has become a soap opera. Consider king Finehair's arrival. It peaks at the end of an episode, when he basically says in front of everybody he wants to overthrow Ragnar, but that situation is not expanded in the next episode, which is typical for soap operas. Speaking of new characters, they are very uninteresting, and especially Yidu is a complete waste of time, and besides I find presence of a Chinese in the fjord disturbing, she just shouldn't be there; her only purpose is to be a drug dealer anyway. Then there is lot of uninteresting talking about family, children (everybody is with a child now, hearing this gives me an allergic reaction) and how it is being a father, which is just boring. And I can't help myself, but the families look like projections of 21th western family values - different from earlier seasons where we could see more freedom in sexual life and less sensitivity about children and death. Overall the episodes are too talkative and while basically nothing happens in most episodes, everything must have happened in the last one and it created a big mess, but I will not comment on that.

For me, Vikings end with the season 3 and the 4a just does not exist. I am actually reviewing the first season recently and friend I enjoy it as never, because I have found the old Ragnar again and the true nature of Vikings with him.

Discovered this a few weeks ago - quickly becoming one of my favorites.
therskybznuiss22 July 2021
First things first - the characters, brought to life by the brilliant performances are... spectacular. The writers, producers, directors, and most of all the actors were -all- so inspired - so much passion for the product, that every scene evokes its own life. Though the show is super serious, it dosent always take itself too seriously which is rare and very welcome.

Every character has redeeming qualities and I must say... This is quite the amazing show. I didnt know there were more than 4 seasons, so maybe I'll finish with what's on Netflix and leave it there, cuz a lot of you guy's really seem to note a quality dip..

A must watch - one of my favorite newer series.

Starts well then gets chewy
ksr-918224 January 2019
The series starts well and gripping until 3rd series after which it gets chewy like bubble gum. Producers get greedy and trashing out episodes. While that part of world is easy on relationships, here it gets crazy by greedy producers. Thousands of people die but not many of the protogonists. Rajnikanth movies in comparison look very realistic and authentic. After watching few episodes in series 4, regret of manhours wasted watching this unending saga. Avoid like plague!

Great entertainment
Robin_clarke416 March 2013
As usual on IMDb fictional dramas set in a particular period in history attract the bores that insist on bleating 'its not historically accurate'. Well just ignore them as this is a fantastic and exciting look at the relatively unexplored Viking world. In the same vein as other fictional historical dramas such as Spartacus or Rome the plot centres around a single character and their family. We then take a brief look into their world and are shown how dangerous a place the world was at this time. The show has a quality feel to it not like some of the more poorly made historical drama around today (sorry but Camelot was just awful!). The sets are impressive and believable and the direction and framing of each scene is obviously set by a skilled hand. The characters are all interesting and likable and the acting is top notch. The only negative I could draw on was that there could have been a bit more action in the first episode but what action there was was very well done. My advice to you, just watch and enjoy it for what it is and don't be out off by the history buffs. If we insisted on only ever watching historical drama that was 100% accurate I'm pretty sure we would be watching none at all. Great show, a solid nine out of ten.

Finally a Viking series!
bueandre15 March 2013
I've been waiting for someone to make a good series about the vikings. I'm from Norway myself, and I'm naturally interested in our history. I've only seen two episodes so far, but I have to say - it really looks promising. The surroundings and nature in the two first episodes is exactly how it looks in "Vestlandet", the western parts of Norway. Stunnings fjords with waterfalls cascading down the sides. It really looks authentic.

The acting is mostly top notch, a few short scenes aren't that great but it's hardly mentionable. It seems like in the beginning, people are speaking an incomprehensible Norse/English mix, and then they continue speaking a modern English. It's pretty clever actually. Fun fact: When the Vikings invaded the British isles they could understand each other's languages.

The story itself is really exciting, and I just want to watch more.. I can hardly wait for the next episode to be released.

I don't know so much about the Ragnar Lodbrok character, but Rollo (Gangarolf) is a very famous character in the Norse sagas.

I highly recommend this show, and I really hope they continue making this for several seasons.

Food is the first cause of the emigration of all past, present and future people. But if you feed it with the hope of having better things, you activate the interest of the person that in extremes not even god stops you, and in the Viking culture we have a great example.

A Viking soap show
jochemunlimited17 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Very good show and then suddenly it was sliding down the hill. And now it is just a soap where you will have a lot of deja vu feelings and weird choices. "No I will not do that!" "Ok relax, I think this and this ok?" "Yes! I am convinced!" or "yes I am in love now!". Also there is not much character development. Most main characters are hollow persons who can drop dead or just vanish without having bad feelings. Also the strong characters from the first seasons are degraded. But yet somehow I want to know what will happen, but every episode I am getting less interested. I think it is a good moment to stop this series.

Edit September 2021: so after a long timed I decided to watch season 6, so the fist half I watched while doing a simple computer game. There were those stupid things again from my previous review. But ok we must wait again for a long time to see the last part of the season, or must I say the last season? So I watched the first episode (11) and ofcourse Bjorn is very wounded, because in episode 10 he is running, slashing and jumping like nobody can hit him. But ok he is almost that, luckily he has enough power to ride a horse, get hit by 3 arrows and he can raise his arm! And someone is being set on fire, but he does not scream! He is just sitting there... Yeah right... So I tried episode 2 and halfway episode 3 I thought: what if I skip to the last episode because I really don't like the show anymore. What do I care who rules Kattegat, there are only boring persons left, like a guard who is defending the gates alone. That is the right tactic... So the last episode everybody dies in a stupid way. People! Let's stop fighting, hello! Dear Vikings, stop fighting please, hello?! Yes you and you, stop fighting. My men are stopping, so they are an easy target, but you must stop ok? Ivar is dead ok? You cannot fight anymore. He was just standing there with blue eyes and he let someone stab him a lot of times. So he is a big fat loser right? No need to fight anymore! And you my dear viking junky, you will be a Christian ok?

So there are now 2 sons still alive if I am right and what will they do? Nobody knows... I am happy this was the last episode. Well the music was great, also the surroundings were nice. The armies fighting was very boring and seen it a lot of times the same way. Just run, smash, hit and run and let all the important characters take a break, talk, drink some coffee or tea and let them slash you with one swing please. We will give a signal when to kill him.

So season 1 - 4 I give it an 8, but at the end of this series I keep my score at a 4. I am sorry for it, but it is just a bad show in the end.

I really liked this show!

This was another great "old world" tv series that i was hooked on. Because of GOT, i got into watching as i love these types of shows now.

Most of the acting was awesome... the scenes reminded you of GOT and the story line was changing each season with dynamic characters coming on to the scene and expanding. I do love shows with attractive people so if you are looking for eye candy, this show brings it!

I did appreciate not having so much "female nudity" as GOT. Its not necessary as shown but this great series.

If you want to watch another great series if you liked GOT, this is your next move. Sad when it ended as well.

Disappointed

It used to be great and fun to watch, but now...The petty dramas are tiresome, there's no passion and excitement. I don't like any of the characters anymore. Ivar sucks, Floki sucks, there's no hero to root for anymore. Time to end it.
