Catalog From The Beyond: Don Coscarelli’s “Incident On and Off a Mountain Road” Episode of Masters Of Horror

Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm series is my favorite franchise of all time. Over the course of five films and four decades, it’s retained its moody, surreal personality without ever getting stale, even as Coscarelli had to contend with ever-shrinking budgets. This is due in large part to the fact that he’s steered the ship for longer than virtually any filmmaker has with a single property. His constant presence (directing four films and producing the final entry) ensured that the series would be more than just the sum of its parts. He’s also managed to shine outside of the confines of Morningside with a certified cult classic in Bubba Ho-Tep and a fun adaption of the trippy (and a wee bit incoherent) novel John Dies at the End.

In my search for a good Coscarelli deep cut candidate, I remembered that he directed the debut episode of Mick GarrisMasters of Horror,

Masters Of Horror Rewatch: “Incident On and Off a Mountain Road”

Genre television is in a better place than it has been since the 1980s. Ongoing series like The Walking Dead, American Horror Story, and Stranger Things are among the most popular and successful shows currently in production. Netflix brought back the Black Mirror anthology, while Syfy’s Channel Zero continues to build its well-deserved cult fanbase with every new season. Small screen horror is big business these days.

But just a decade or so ago, that wasn’t the case. So when Showtime announced its Masters of Horror anthology series, it was a pretty big risk. Still one of the most ambitious television horror projects ever attempted, Masters of Horror was the brainchild of director and producer Mick Garris, who dreamed of a series in which he and his fellow genre filmmakers would have free reign to tell whatever stories they wanted to tell, however they wanted to tell them.

Warning: This post contains major spoilers from Grimm‘s series finale.

In the end, Grimm‘s devil is defeated by a tiny detail.

Granted, that detail — that Nick must willingly give Zerstörer the magic stick in order for the otherworldly demon to complete his all-powerful staff and bring on the apocalypse — doesn’t make itself apparent until the eleventh hour, when our hero thinks he’s lost everyone he ever cared about.

Grimm Recap: Tiny Terrors

Grimm Recap: Tiny Terrors
Need to catch up? Check out the previous Grimm recap here.

The Wesen-o’-the-week in this week’s Grimm is a three-eyed, three-armed baby eater.

And he’s a good guy.

While watching the hour, you definitely get a sense that the NBC supernatural drama has loosened the reins in its sixth and final season — and that’s a great thing.

After last week’s joyfully slapstick hour, this week’s installment makes light of the fact that a creature known as “El Cuegle” snacks on infants (no, seriously) at the same time that the episode raises — and, in an uncharacteristic move for the series,
