Joe Flaherty, a writer and performer on the influential and beloved sketch comedy series Sctv and a series regular on Freaks and Geeks, died Monday following a brief illness. He was 82.
His death was announced by his daughter Gudrun Flaherty, who said in a press statement, “After a brief illness, he left us yesterday, and since then, I’ve been struggling to come to terms with this immense loss. Dad was an extraordinary man, known for his boundless heart and an unwavering passion for movies from the ’40s and ’50s. His insights into the golden age of cinema didn’t just shape his professional life; they were also a source of endless fascination for me. In these last few months, as he faced his health challenges, we had the precious opportunity to watch many of those classic movies together — moments I will forever hold dear.”

Another champion has been crowned on Jeopardy!‘s Invitational Tournament, and it looks like we very well could be heading towards a repeat matchup in the upcoming Jeopardy! Masters primetime event on ABC. On Wednesday’s semifinals, Sam Kavanaugh, Andrew He, and Larissa Kelly faced off for the chance to advance and face off with the first Jit winner, Amy Schneider. The first round found Kelly getting just one answer wrong of 13 buzz-ins — unfortunately, though, it was on a true Daily Double. Meanwhile, Kavanaugh struggled at the outset, and while He had fewer correct answers than Kelly, he had more money, leading with $5,600 to Kelly’s $4,000 and Kavanaugh’s $800. Double Jeopardy was a similar story. Only, this time, it was He who got both of the Daily Doubles (and answered them correctly). By the end of the round, He had a runaway lead with a whopping $32,000 to Kelly’s $13,200 and Kavanaugh’s $9,200. Perhaps unsurprisingly,...

Conan O’Brien has set a return to “The Tonight Show,” slotting a guest appearance for next week’s April 9 broadcast. The occasion will mark the comedian and former late night host’s first time back on the program since his acrimonious exit from NBC in 2010, in which he was replaced by Jay Leno as the show’s host following a six-month tenure.
O’Brien is on the publicity circuit to promote his coming travelogue series, “Conan O’Brien Must Go.” The show marks O’Brien’s first television project since his TBS late night show “Conan” ended in 2021 after 11 seasons on the air.

Will Trent isn’t going anywhere. ABC has decided to greenlight its engaging procedural for a third season, thanks to Season 2’s very solid ratings in its first few episodes. Per Deadline, the show recently enjoyed its highest-rated episode ever with its March 5 episode, Season 2’s “You Don’t Have to Understand.” The series received a similarly early renewal for its second season after its inaugural season was the top new drama in terms of viewers with almost 10 million. Will Trent is a police procedural with a unique twist: Its eponymous character (played by Ramon Rodriguez) has dyslexia and thus struggles to read things quickly. That hasn’t stopped him from being a most-valued member of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, though; in fact, he seems to have a unique gift of getting into the mindset of victims in order to solve the cases at hand, whether it’s a murder,...

Matt Czuchry is weighing in on the Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) romance discourse! During the April 2 episode of The Talk, the Gilmore Girls alum was shown a TikTok video of fan hating on both Logan Huntzberger and Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia), calling them “below average” boyfriends and a possible reason why “standards have been on the floor for women for decades now.” Czuchry, always a gentleman, politely said, “We shouldn’t be searching for perfection in anything, whether it be relationships or whatever it may be.” He noted how Gilmore Girls has “spanned generations” because of its “timeless nature,” due in large part to creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Dan Palladino. “But specific to that take, I think that Logan had his strengths and weaknesses, and Jess has his strengths and weaknesses, and Dean has their strengths and weaknesses like we all do,” Czuchry elaborated. “I think the fun...

Private-equity giant Apollo Global Management made a $27 billion offer to acquire all of Paramount Global this week, sources familiar with the bid told Variety. However, the special committee set up by the Paramount Global board of directors to consider M&a options declined to engage with the bid.
Apollo submitted an all-cash bid on Sunday, March 31, to acquire Paramount Global in a deal worth more than $27 billion of total enterprise value, encompassing equity and debt, according to people familiar with the situation. That came after Apollo had offered $11 billion to buy Paramount Pictures alone, a bid that was also rebuffed by Paramount’s committee.

Sex and the City has been a trailblazing staple of the small screen since it first debuted in 2008 on HBO, but that doesn’t mean all of it holds up upon modern review. There is some serious debate right now as to whether Gen Z viewers who might discover the show anew — now that it’s streaming in full on Netflix — will enjoy what the show has to offer the way millennials and Gen X-ers did when it was still on air. The show follows four single women — Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) — living in Manhattan, partying, and having lots of sex. For those who grew up on HBO’s oft-compared female-centered follow-up Girls, this might not seem so revolutionary, but at the time, it was. That being said, though the show was progressive in many areas at the time,...

It’s one of the most iconic Saturday Night Live sketches of all time — and without Christina Applegate, it might never have happened at all.
Applegate recalled the role she played in getting the sketch on the air while chatting with Dana Carvey and David Spade on today’s episode of “Fly on the Wall,” the duo’s SNL-centric podcast.
Applegate first hosted SNL on May 8, 1993 — an episode most famous for the first appearance of Chris Farley’s motivational speaker character Matt Foley, aka the “Van Down by the River” guy.
In the infamous sketch, Farley’s over-the-top physical comedy quickly causes Applegate and Spade to break into laughter. They struggle to contain it for the rest of the scene, as Farley hikes his pants up, squats low, and destroys a coffee table with an explosive jump.

With Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) coming back to Grey Sloan during the April 4 episode of Grey’s Anatomy, we’ve all wondered if Callie (Sara Ramírez) will join her. For a series named after Christian Dior’s history-making collection, “The New Look” certainly took its time showing the iconic clothes. Actually, the Dior line that made him a household name on both sides of the Atlantic didn’t appear until the final moments of the Apple TV+ drama’s season finale, a choice that might have been more surprising if what came before hadn’t been so riveting.
Created by Todd A. Kessler, “The New Look” was more interested in the cost of survival than in Dior’s extravagant collection. Jerrod Carmichael recently opened up to Esquire magazine about tensions with fellow comedian Dave Chappelle. Carmichael, who is making the press rounds in support of his new HBO series, generated headlines in June 2022 when he criticized Chappelle, who had already been earning backlash for making jokes about the transgender community.
“Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro?” Carmichael asked during a GQ magazine profile at the time, referring to the comedian’s comments about trans people. “That’s the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans shit? It’s an odd hill to die on.

The end is near for the Cooper family as Young Sheldon‘s stars begin to reach their final days filming the last season of the CBS series and Big Bang Theory spinoff. Star Raegan Revord, who plays Sheldon’s (Iain Armitage) sister, Missy, took to Instagram to document the final family dinner scene filmed as a crew. “Last family dinner scene was an emotional one to film,” Raegan wrote, captioning a series of images. “We opened the show with a dinner scene where we were first introduced to the Cooper family and they quickly became a staple in the show. Those scenes were always my favorite to film because they brought us all together and, like a real family, we got to sit around the table and eat and catch up with each other. It felt like being home with the people I love.” Featured alongside Raegan and Armitage in...

Columbo wouldn’t know what to make of the technicolored outfits sported by amateur snoop Elsbeth Tascioni (played to quirky perfection by Emmy winner Carrie Preston). Yet the iconic TV detective, immortalized by the late Peter Falk and known for his shabby trench coat, would likely recognize a kindred spirit cut from the same metaphorical cloth. Elsbeth, a delightful spinoff built around a memorably offbeat character first introduced as a foil on Robert and Michelle King‘s The Good Wife and The Good Fight, is in good company. Peacock‘s terrific Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, an irreverent drifter with a gift for spotting murderous liars, follows a similar Columbo-like “how-catch-’em” light mystery format. We see the crime and the criminal—typically a well-known actor—before our hero even shows their face. Elsbeth’s madcap wardrobe and sunny sensibility, much like Columbo’s shambling demeanor and Charlie’s scrappy underdog persona,...

The outsized audience for this week’s highly-watched women’s NCAA basketball match between Iowa and Lsu may also have noticed that many of the commercials seen during the game belonged to AT&T, State Farm, Home Depot and Gatorade. There was good reason.
Optimum Sports, a media agency that specializes in sports properties and is part of ad giant Omnicom Group, had quietly snatched up 35% of advertising time during the game, a record setter in terms of viewership for women’s sports and the latest example of how interest in female players and the leagues in which they play is booming.

The latest round of Outlander spinoff casting includes an Easter Egg for a subset of the book-loyal fandom.
Starz on Wednesday announced the addition of four roles to the forthcoming prequel, Blood of My Blood. Among them: Watchmen‘s Sara Vickers in the part of Brian Fraser’s mother (and, therefore, Jamie Fraser’s grandmother). The character is a housekeeper in the Lovat household, which is good and all, but we’re super into how she’s also named after someone many devotees of author Diana Gabaldon will recognize: Davina Porter, who narrates the audiobook versions of Gabaldon’s Outlander book series.

A newly unsealed document in a potential class-action lawsuit alleges that Facebook shut down Facebook Watch to keep Netflix among its top advertisers — and to keep ads for Netflix series and films off of emerging competitors like Snapchat, a person with knowledge of the lawsuit tells IndieWire. And along the way, the two traded lots and lots of your data — allegedly.
The suit, filed by attorney Brian J. Dunne on behalf of other Facebook advertisers, seeks billions in damages. If they win at trial or settle, the exact dollar amount would come down to a percentage of Facebook’s overall advertising revenue from 2016-2019.
Before Facebook launched streaming-video platform Facebook Watch in August 2017, Netflix spent about $40 million per year on Facebook ads, per the letter from Dunne to a Judge Donato. Shortly after Mark Zuckerberg doomed Facebook Watch by decimating its budget in 2018, the spend increased to $150 million; two years later,...

When the Writers Guild of America went on strike last May, union leaders argued that artificial intelligence posed an existential threat to writers, painting a picture of a dystopian future in which TV shows might be crafted by one writer and a machine.
