A Marvel project has received the studio’s first perfect Rotten Tomatoes score since the launch of the MCU.
Disney+’s newly launched animated series X-Men ’97 has a very rare 100 percent “Fresh” rating.
While many of the reviewers are from more niche fan-focused sites than for a typical live-action show or feature film, the score nonetheless edges out Marvel’s other top-scored projects like 2022’s Ms. Marvel (98 percent), 2018’s Black Panther (96 percent), 2013’s Marvel’s Agents of Shield (95 percent) and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame (94 percent).
Marvel Animation’s X-Men ’97, which premiered Wednesday, reboots 1992’s X-Men: The Animated Series. From the official descriptions: X-Men ’97 “revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.”

But when they’re pressed to present a real-life person in the form of this scapegoat, John Cena’s washed-up Atlantic City performer “Rock Hard” Rod steps in. The only catch? Rod wants to stick around in his Ricky Stanicky alias for the foreseeable future, presenting a potential disaster for Dean, Jt, and Wes as the man embeds himself into their family and friends circle as well as at work. Few limited series captivated 2010s audiences more than “Big Little Lies.” David E. While the high profile cast led by Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon have many other demands of their time, Kidman delighted fans in late 2023 by announcing that she had officially begun developing Season 3 alongside Witherspoon.
Details about a potential Season 3 are scarce, but the show’s ensemble cast members have taken many opportunities to express their excitement about returning. Not all superheroes wear capes, but Shirley Chisholm certainly did. In 1969, shortly after becoming the first Black woman elected to Congress, Chisholm strode through the halls of power in a houndstooth cape coat. The coat was stylish, tasteful, and clear in its message: The Congresswoman would not be ignored.
That look is recreated in “Shirley,” Netflix’s biopic about Chisholm’s early years in the House of Representatives and her eventual run for president. In fact, it’s the very first thing we see Chisholm wearing as she poses with her fellow representatives for a Congressional class photo. For costume designer Megan “Bijou” Coates, this piece was perfect for introducing Chisholm (Regina King) as both a historical figure and a dramatic character. “It’s the cape,” she told IndieWire. “It’s all the elements of the costume: The gloves, the little fascinator, the boots. Netflix’s password-sharing crackdown is working. Well, it is and maybe it isn’t.
According to a new study of more than 2,500 U.S. households performed by Leichtman Research Group (Lrg), 10 percent of Netflix users are still borrowing the service. If that feels low, it is — according to recent history, at least. In 2022, Lrg found that 15 percent of Netflix users were borrowing someone else’s paid account; the rate was 14 percent in 2020 and 16 percent in 2018.
Ten percent starts to feel less small when you do the math. Netflix has 260 million global paid users, which (basically) means that 26 million users are still not being monetized. Assuming they should be paying at least $7.99/month apiece — the going rate to share with an outsider — that’s $200 million-plus in monthly revenue not being collected.
A Netflix rep did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s request for comment on Lrg’s findings.

The beauty of “X-Men ’97” (currently streaming on Disney+) is that it’s more than just a nostalgia trip — it’s a very timely continuation of “X-Men: The Animated Series” that addresses today’s more complicated world while staying true to the spirit of the original. There’s a greater celebration of queer diversity (Morph has been redesigned as a non-binary shapeshifter) but also an accelerated powder keg of hate, which makes the mutants’ enemies much more formidable. This calls for drastic action, which is why the torch has been passed to former arch nemesis Magneto (Matthew Waterson) to lead the X-Men following the loss of Professor Xavier.
The 10-episode animated series also represents Marvel’s first “X-Men” project since regaining the rights from Fox and serves as a prelude to the franchise joining the MCU in this summer’s lone Marvel movie, “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Yet it was vital...

It was two years ago news first broke that SNL cast members and Staten Island natives Colin Jost and Pete Davidson had purchased a Staten Island Ferry in hopes of turning it into an entertainment venue. Since then, various reports have surfaced of no progress being made, of rats and asbestos in the boat, and even Davidson himself claiming he made the purchase while stoned and that it had left him “in the hole.”
Built in 1965, the boat was decommissioned and auctioned off by the city for $280,100. But Davidson and Jost didn’t foot the bill alone: They had joined up with Paul Italia, co-founder of NYC comedy club The Stand, and a fourth partner.
Curbed has now tracked down that fourth partner, Ron Castellano, to finally get some answers on what’s going down with the ship. The good news is, they are making progress after all.

When Peter Morgan announced The Crown‘s sixth season would be its last, there was already a wealth of royal drama to justify the show’s continuance. The spare had defected to America with his wife — and the fact that she was a divorcée and non-British made it all pretty full circle with where the show began, with Edward VIII abdicating for a similar destiny with Wallis Simpson. After departing the U.K. with so much urgency, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle then went very, very rogue by airing the palace’s dirtiest laundry for all the world to see in their jaw-dropping Oprah interview. For a firm family that’d always been so militant about abiding by protocol, a system of stricture The Crown showcased very well from start to finish, the Sussexes’ moves were and remain completely unprecedented. “I’m of two minds,” Apatow said of the rise of viewers rediscovering older series. “There’s a part of me that’s an audience member: I’ll go back and rewatch ‘Deadwood’ or ‘NYPD Blue’ or any of the David Milch shows. I understand why people like the comfort food of television. But it’s a scary thing as a creator of television, because of all the streamers going, ‘Wait a second. We don’t need to spend $200 million on a new show. We can just bring back “Barnaby Jones.

It has been a while since “The Queen’s Gambit,” but as proven by “Rematch,” viewers’ love for chess is certainly not diminishing.
The show, dedicated to confrontation between famous chess player Garry Kasparov and Ibm’s supercomputer Deep Blue, was named the winner at Series Mania.
A somewhat lukewarm reception of “Apples Never Fall” didn’t stop Annette Bening from being crowned as best actress. The Peacock offering, also featuring Sam Neill and Alison Brie, is the latest adaptation of “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers” scribe Liane Moriarty. Lille, France — The big news at Series Mania was Warner Bros. Discovery’s European roll-out timeline for Max, announced Thursday at the climax of the Series Mania’s Lille Dialogues.
The most keenly anticipated session was nearly Series Mania’ Forum first: a Netflix showcase hosted by a confident Larry Tanz who significantly proved the only goal streamer exec to drill down on volume commitment.
Nobody was saying at Series Mania the industry is in an easy place. But signs at this year’s edition that, at least in Europe, business may be turning a corner, or at least has the corner in sight.

Fifteen years ago this week, history was made when a sitting U.S. President appeared on a late-night talk show for the first time. Given how synonymous late-night TV and politics can be, it may surprise you that this didn’t occur before March 19, 2009, when then-President Barack Obama appeared on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show as his sole guest of the night (aside from a musical performance by Garth Brooks).
Sure, presidential candidates have made the rounds on talk shows—and sketch shows—for decades, but sitting down for an interview on a late-night show didn’t always seem like an appropriate move for a commander-in-chief. Once in office, they’re bound to have serious pressing questions to answer—topics that are more appropriately addressed on a nightly newscast than a chat show, where it’s less likely to generate an analytical discussion with the host.
That’s probably why...

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” and Cixin Liu’s “Three-Body Problem,” the book on which it is based.]
Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” is based on a wildly popular book series by Cixin Liu — but how close does it come to the source material? Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have experience adapting dense novels with “Game of Thrones” — but they’ve also been in the position of having to branch away from the original text and disappointing audiences as a result. “3 Body Problem,” which they co-created and executive produce with Alexander Woo, could face the same issues.
The sci-fi drama begins with a woman named Ye Wenjie, whose father is killed during the Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 1960s. Wenjie ends up working at a mysterious military base which she eventually learns is trying to make extraterrestrial contact, and her work there ripples into the present, when a...

Jimmy Kimmel and Regina King shared a touching moment Thursday night as the actress visited Kimmel’s show for the first time since her son’s death in 2022.
King has been making the rounds in recent weeks, promoting her new film, Shirley. In interviews with Good Morning America and Harper’s Bazaar, she’s also candidly discussed her grief over her 26 year-old son’s death by suicide.
Although Kimmel didn’t directly address the topic in his interview with King last night, it was clearly on his mind as he welcomed her back to the show.
“It’s very good to see you. How are you doing right now?” he asked as she sat down.
“Right now, I’m good,” King responded.
“Good, I’m glad to hear that,” Kimmel said. “I know you’ve been through a lot in the last year.”

Aye yai yai, the debate around AI.
In a new Nrg (National Research Group) poll shared exclusively with IndieWire, 42 percent of film and television production professionals say AI “will harm people” in their field. Yet nearly a third (32 percent) say it will “benefit” them, and the remaining one-quarter either believe it will have no impact or say they do not yet know the impact.
We know which side Dakota Johnson is on.
The February 2024 survey of just over 1,500 people ages 18-64 was not limited to those in the film and TV production space. It was, however, limited to what Nrg deemed “creative class professionals” who are employed either full-time or part-time in a job that requires “high degrees of creativity and autonomy.” That covers about 31 percent of the U.S. labor market; the results were weighted to represent American demographics.

AI spending is expected to crest above $13 billion by 2028, with the spread falling fairly evenly across analytics, development/delivery and customer experiences like personalization and discovery, media analysts announced at a Series Mania presentation on Thursday.
However, the analysts do not anticipate the content creation apocalypse that has underscored much AI coverage of late.
Leading off a daylong series of panels that confronted those two troubling vowels on everyone’s mind from a panoply of industry perspectives, research directors from Omdia and Plum Research instead sought to give context – to assuage fears and misconception by framing machine learning more as...

Forget “Saltburn” – now, it’s up to BBC Three’s series “Boarders” to take an honest look at Britain’s most exclusive private schools.
“You hear so many horror stories about these places, but it’s a rite of passage. So many of our PMs and people of power went there. I think there is something called ‘boarding school syndrome’ when you deal with politicians who exhibit complete lack of compassion. That’s what they learnt there,” explains Daniel Lawrence Taylor, who created the show.
His actor, Josh Tedeku, agrees.
“I went to Oxford recently and there is a similar vibe.

Stephen Colbert has found himself on the receiving end of a legal threat from a woman who’s rumored to have had an affair with Prince William.
Lawyers for former model Lady Rose Hanbury, Marchioness of Cholmondeley confirmed Friday that they sent a legal notice to The Late Show in response to jokes Colbert made earlier this month on his show.
Although rumors of an alleged affair between William and Hanbury have circulated for several years, they’ve resurfaced amid the fevered speculation surrounding Kate Middleton’s absence from the public eye following her reported abdominal surgery earlier this year. Hanbury, through her lawyers, has denied the alleged affair, calling the rumors “completely false.”
It was during his monologue on the night of March 12th that Colbert joked of Prince William’s rumored affair, “I think we all know who the other woman is… Say it with me: the Marchioness of Cholmondeley.

What does the future hold for Paramount Global? The odds of a seismic M&a event seem to be increasing: Private-equity firm Apollo Global has reportedly offered $11 billion for Paramount’s Hollywood studios. Short of carving up the “mountain of entertainment,” as the Paramount+ tagline boasts, analysts say the overture could drive up bidding for the entirety of Paramount Global — which is what Shari Redstone, who owns a controlling stake in the media conglomerate, is understood to prefer.
Given that backdrop, let’s consider what Paramount Global comprises — and the potential effect of selling it off in its entirety or in pieces.

Seth Meyers is bringing his standup act to Chicago this summer, taping a new special on June 15 at the Vic Theatre.
It’s unclear when and on what platform Meyers’ special will be released, but his previous hour, Lobby Baby, premiered on Netflix in 2019.
That special saw Meyers mining his personal life for stories about marriage proposals, his chaotic wedding day, and — as the title suggests — the time his wife Alexi gave birth to their son in the lobby of their apartment building.
That’s a premise that sounds hard to top, but the couple has since welcomed another child. Here’s hoping it gave him some more good material.
