Oppenheimer took the top prize at the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night.
The film won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for outstanding producer of theatrical motion pictures, a day after taking top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Other big winners were Beef, which also won at the SAG Awards and Sunday’s Film Independent Spirit Awards, along with Succession and The Bear, both of which also won SAG Awards on Saturday.
Oppenheimer producer Emma Thomas accepted the theatrical motion picture award, noting that in a room full of producers, “This means so much coming from you, this room is full of people whose work we admire,” adding, “You know how hard the job can be, you also know how great the job can be; it’s the best job on set.” She also called director Christopher Nolan (who is also her husband) “the best producer you can possibly hope for.

The good news for streaming? It’s still growing! The bad news? The growth is not nearly as fast as it had been.
Streaming subscriptions increased by 10.1 percent in 2023, according to market researcher Antenna’s new State of Subscriptions report; hey, double-digit growth is always nice! It’s a bit less nice, however, when you compare it with the 21.6 percent growth of 2022.
Making matters (slightly) worse is that streaming’s churn — the cancellation of a subscription — is slightly up. Thankfully, 10 percent of churners resubscribe the next month, and one in three are back within six months. Peacock was the best of the bunch in 2023 terms of year-over-year churn improvement; Starz is the worst.
See Antenna’s churn-rate graph here:
In 2023, the industry saw 17 million fewer net subscriber additions than in 2022; total U.S. subscriptions at the end of the year were 242.9 million subs. Globally, Netflix has that number beat on its own.

X-Files creator Chris Carter has talked to Ryan Coogler about the Black Panther director's upcoming reboot of the show - and he wants to believe. Carter says the new series has his blessing. In a new interview with The Wrap, Carter reports that Disney (who owns the series after their acquisition of 20th Century Fox) and Coogler approached him regarding the new series, and says "I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing." So far, we don't know much about Coogler's vision for the series, although the initial reports of the project noted that it will have a more diverse cast than its predecessor.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” spans five different major locations — London, Paris, a ship, Alexandria and Lisbon — which meant production designers James Price and Shona Heath had a considerable undertaking ahead of them when they signed on.
Creating Lisbon proved to be one of the biggest jobs for cinematographer Robbie Ryan and even Lanthimos. As Emma Stone’s Bella Baxter departs her black-and-white world of Victorian-era London and Godwin’s (Willem Dafoe’s) home, the movie transitions into a pastel-colored world — there’s a soundstage with a water tank for the scenic sea view, and a giant picturesque backdrop.
Used to filming with natural lighting and exterior shots, Lanthimos and Ryan had to adjust to what they call their most challenging task.
Here the two reflect on working together for the first time and how they collaborated on “Poor Things.”

Netflix’s first exclusive livestream of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards last weekend has not charted in the streamer’s list of top 10 English-language TV titles.
The platform’s latest weekly charts for February 19-25 are led by Avatar: The Last Airbender: Season 1 on 21.2m views, a figure Netflix reaches by dividing total hours viewed by total run time, rounded to 100,000.
Netflix has not published any viewership metric for the 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on February 24, a Saturday, but views will be less than those of The Tourist: Season 1, which ranked 10th on the chart on 2.1million.

Christopher Nolan is currently enjoying the award season wealth thanks to his masterful work on the epic-sized biopic Oppenheimer. The film, based around theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, was a blend of many different genres. This included dashes of horror that made the reality of his life-changing creation, the atomic bomb, that much more haunting. Nolan recently talked about his desire to make a horror film, but via The Telegraph and Syfy, the director revealed that his sci-fi thriller Inception was originally conceived with the horror genre in mind.

The actors strike and a series of holiday blockbusters that didn’t shine as brightly took a bite out of Imax’s fourth-quarter earnings. Revenues at the exhibition and technology company fell to $86 million, a 12% drop from the $98 million that the company reported in the prior-year quarter. Profits, however, were essentially flat, with Imax reporting net income of $2.5 million, a 3% decline from the $2.6 million in the prior-year quarter. Imax’s adjusted earnings per share of 17 cents represented an 11% drop.
Imax’s revenues missed Wall Street’s estimates of $89.6 million, while its profits topped projections of 10 cents per share.
Heading into the quarter, Imax faced tough comparisons with the close of 2022 when “Avatar: The Way of Water” dominated the box office, inspiring moviegoers to check out Pandora in the widest screens available. That was good news for Imax, which has become synonymous with the fanboy and fangirl fare. Instead, Imax was...

Netflix had new movies and television series dominating this week's Top 10 list, with the debut of the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender taking the lead when it comes to the television side of the streaming platform. With more than 21.2 million views during its first four days as a part of Netflix's catalog, the live-action adaptation of the Nickelodeon classic easily became the most successful original title of the week for the studio. The debut of Avatar: The Last Airbender managed to create a bigger impact than the numbers obtained by One Piece when the title premiered on Netflix last year, proving that audiences can't get enough of Aang (Gordon Cormier) and his journey.

True Detective is one of the most unusually successful programs in the history of HBO, as the series’ dramatic rise, fall, and rejuvenation are almost as exciting as the mysteries within the show itself. The first season of True Detective, from director Cary Joji Fukunaga and writer Nic Pizzolatto, changed television forever by bringing massive movie stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson to the small screen for a series that felt more cinematic than what was on the big screen. While the second and third seasons felt very underwhelming in comparison to Season 1, the franchise received a major bump in popularity thanks to the groundbreaking critical and commercial success of True Detective: Night Country. With Night Country writer/director Issa López set to return for True Detective Season 5, it's time for the series to fully embrace its horror roots.

High-profile media about marginalized groups, although more common, is still a section of our viewing schedules that we rightly crave. However, many have criticized the stereotypical and often two-dimensional way these stories are discussed, with the subjects at their heart often being reduced simply to their unfortunate circumstance. One such series that has not just avoided that criticism, but thrived against it, is Miranda Kwok's gripping thriller The Cleaning Lady, a story of a Cambodian-Filipino former surgeon who must work as a cleaner in Las Vegas to afford life-saving treatment for her son. Although many of her actions may seem immoral, it is impossible to not relate to the desperate hunt to find healthcare for a loved one against an unbalanced and dysfunctional societal system, with this link between the audience and series one of its major triumphs.

Having written over 70 books and hundreds of short stories, Stephen King has provided the source material for dozens of movies over the past five decades. This has included classics like The Shining, Carrie, and Misery, contemporary hits like It and Gerald's Game, and a few infamous entries like Maximum Overdrive and The Lawnmower Man. Through this, King's name (both in film and literature) has largely become synonymous with horror. However, with such a vast list of publications and movie adaptations, though, the author's work is not exclusive to a single genre. In fact, his favorite movies based on his books aren't even horror.

Let’s rewind back to November 2023, the very first weekend after the historic Screen Actors Guild strike ended. Back then, star Da’Vine Joy Randolph shared with IndieWire that she was already at ease with how “The Holdovers” would be received, despite only director Alexander Payne being able to promote it during its first couple of months of screening.
“I knew that we would reach people’s hearts,” said the eventual frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, who plays Mary Lamb, a prep school head chef and grieving mother in the Focus Features release. “I feel like I was a part of something really special that could have sustained and held it, even if [the strikes] went all the way through the end of the year.”

Whenever it comes to book-to-screen adaptations, things always seem to change during the transition. Be it character arcs, appearances, or entire plot points that are either added or removed, nearly no adaptation is safe. But sometimes, adaptations can be just as impactful as the original work, and the Western series Longmire is a great example of how to capture the spirit of the original while changing just about everything else. While loosely based on the mystery novels by Craig Johnson, the A&e-turned-Netflix series is a bit different from the source material.

The last thing TV needs right now is another reboot. So when it was announced in January that Jon Stewart would be returning home to “The Daily Show,” hosting the show on Mondays through the 2024 election and becoming an executive producer full-time on the program, I found myself curious what the response would be from longtime fans.
During his first run as host of the Comedy Central news program (1999-2015) Stewart paved a new kind of infotainment that inarguably shaped how a segment of the population consumed news. In his wake, he was far from the only one. When Stewart got the Mark Twain Prize in 2022, former “Daily Show” correspondent Bee cracked, “Satire solves the world’s problems. Don’t believe me? Just look at all the satirical shows we now have and how amazing the world is doing!”
Does that world still need Jon Stewart? Perhaps more pressing: Is...

The debut of a new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm triggers excitement and anticipation among the television community, or anyone with a strong sense of humor. We shouldn't take anything created by Larry David for granted. The recent launch of Season 12 of Curb Your Enthusiasm is met with a bittersweet reception, though, as it is confirmed to be the show's final season. However, in the grand scope of the prolific series, its legacy may have been better suited if it had ended back in 2011, with the conclusion of Season 8, because ever since then, Curb has been, pretty, pretty, pretty good ... but not as great as it used to be.

R. Lance Hill, the screenwriter of the original 1989 film “Road House,” has filed a law suit against Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and its parent company, Amazon Studios, for copyright infringement.
In the filing obtained by Variety, Hill (who uses pen name David Lee Henry) claims Amazon ignored his ability to reclaim the rights for his 1986 screenplay as they mounted a remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal, out March 21 on Prime Video.
Hill’s lawsuit alleges that he filed a petition with the U.S. Copyright Office in 2021, requesting that the copyright return to him after United Artists’ claim was set to expire in November 2023. The suit goes on to allege that Amazon ignored his claims and proceeded with the film, using artificial intelligence to replicate the voices of actors for Adr during the SAG strike in an effort to complete the film before the Nov. 10 deadline.

Welcome to the feverish final moments of this year’s Oscar campaign season! With voting (finally) ending later this evening — mere hours after this article is first published — Hollywood and its biggest names and brightest talents will finally be able to take a breath after months of premiering, screening, interviewing, chatting, and awards show-ing. All across the land, cries of “pencils down!” shall ring out, and the town will grow temporarily quiet, at least until it’s time to lace up for Hollywood’s biggest night, nearly two blessed weeks away. (You can catch up on all of the nominations right here.)
But even if no actual campaigning happens during that fallow period, plenty of prognosticating will still be rolling out, and in hopes of (somewhat) avoiding that kind of idle chatter, some of the editors of IndieWire have taken on a different ask. Not who will win, or even who should win,...

The SAG Awards are huge — in Canada.
Netflix live-streamed the Screen Actors Guild’s event on Saturday, and though the awards show did not make the Top 10 in the U.S. (or globally), it did in exactly one country: Canada. As a matter of fact, it made the Top 9 (at number nine) there.

Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Britain's secret underworld of scandalous activity was slowly being revealed to the rest of the world. Naturally, there are a plethora of films, TV shows, and miniseries depicting these various transgressions. One of the earliest (and the biggest) modern British public scandals was the Profumo affair, depicted in The Trial of Christine Keeler, which brought down an entire government and opened the floodgates for other scandals. On its heels was the Robert Boothby scandal, about a Conservative party member of parliament who had numerous sexual affairs. Boothby's scandal hasn't attracted a major screen adaptation yet. However, a Boothby-like scandal, the Thorpe affair, which involved a murder conspiracy by the leader of the opposition party against his ex-boyfriend in the 1970s, was made into the BBC miniseries, A Very English Scandal.

2004's "Mean Girls" has become a seminal classic of teen girl cinema, with Rachel McAdams' Regina George, Lacey Chabert's Gretchen Weiners, Amanda Seyfried's Karen Smith, and Lindsay Lohan's Cady Heron just as culturally important (and quotable) as say, Matthew Broderick in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." A time capsule of early aughts fashion and sensibilities, "Mean Girls" is a cultural touchstone and arguably the last time a teen movie crossed over into mainstream popularity without being a part of a massive franchise like "Twilight" or "The Hunger Games" (or a slasher film). Simply put, "Mean Girls" is now woven into the fabric of American pop culture.
The film helped solidify Lohan's place as one of Hollywood's "it girls," and her off-set antics became just as talked about as whatever film she had out in theaters. So much so, that even the insulting nickname "fire crotch" for her made...

“I’ve been married four times now,” Jennifer Lopez says to the camera during the opening minutes of “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” “and I’m sure people watching from the outside are like ‘What is this girl’s fucking problem?’”
If nothing else, this semi-candid Epk of a film — which chronicles the making of “This Is Me… Now: A Love Story,” the self-financed musical fairy tale that Lopez released on Prime video earlier this month in support of her new album of the same name — identifies the multi-talented music icon’s “fucking problem” more nakedly than anything else she’s ever made: She’s desperate to be understood, but petrified of putting herself out there.
It’s a dilemma inherent to celebrity in the digital age, and one that might be relatable to anyone who’s tried to be vulnerable in a world that can destroy you for exposing your heart.

Within the last decade, Kate Winslet has made some of the best moves of her career on HBO. 2011's Mildred Pierce was a critically praised yet underseen gem helmed by Todd Haynes (May December) that would go on to earn Winslet an Emmy. 2021's Mare of Easttown, which became one of the network's biggest watercooler successes, was a gripping mystery to follow along with each week — and not merely because of Winslet's commitment to a regional Philadelphian accent, either. With this year's The Regime, which hails from The Menu and Succession writer Will Tracy, Winslet is poised to deliver another performance that will no doubt create buzz. The biggest dilemma that this miniseries has, however, is being able to match the energy she gives to arguably one of the most contemptible characters in her filmography. Part-dark satire, part-drama, The Regime offers shades of previous farcical takes on politics like Veep and The Great,...

While short films are often disregarded as a less important medium of storytelling when compared to feature projects, the format has become an increasingly viable one for Hollywood’s leading directors, Yorgos Lanthimos. Many prominent filmmakers like Christopher Nolan made short films when studying at university and building their cinematic skills. Most recently, short films by acclaimed directors like Wes Anderson’s The Story of Henry Sugar and Pedro Almodovar’s Strange Way of Life were given substantial theatrical releases, allowing cinephiles to see the films in the best possible format. The medium remains a popular one, as filmmakers can experiment with different styles that may not be well-suited for a sustained narrative feature. Despite earning rave reviews from the select audiences that have seen it, a short film made by Lanthimos and frequent collaborator Emma Stone may never be seen by general audiences.

The leader of a fictional European country falls apart in HBO’s latest political satire, “The Regime,” premiering on March 3. The network has a long history of deconstructing power on shows like “Veep” and “Succession,” two programs that will undoubtedly spring to mind during this 6-episode descent into power-hungry madness. Oscar winner Kate Winslet, who won Emmys for her previous two HBO mini-series (“Mildred Pierce” & “Mare of Easttown”), is having a blast as Chancellor Elena Vernham, a world leader who is so insecure and unstable that she’s dragging her country down with her.

Warner Bros. Discovery is no longer pursuing an acquisition of Paramount Global, CNBC reported on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Skydance is still performing its due diligence on a potential merger with Paramount — or perhaps an acquisition of its parent company.
Wbd chief David Zaslav met with Paramount CEO Bob Bakish in December to discuss a potential merger. Those discussions heated up in January, but CNBC says those talks have cooled since.
When reached by IndieWire, Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery each had no comment on this story.
Warner Bros. Discovery cannot be involved in any M&a activity until April 8, when the Reverse Morris Trust lock-up period from Discovery’s WarnerMedia deal with AT&T expires.
Paramount has set up a special committee with a financial adviser to sift through potential bids. It is likely the committee has already evaluated Byron Allen’s $30 billion bid; there is a contingent of analysts who believe Allen does not have sufficient funding.

“You can’t see them, but they see everything.”
Warner Bros. has released the trailer for the upcoming horror film “The Watchers,” written and directed by Ishana Shyamalan, the daughter of horror veteran M. Night Shyamalan, in her directorial debut. Based on the gothic horror novel by A.H. Shine, the film stars Dakota Fanning and is set for release in North America on June 7.
Per its official description, “The Watchers” follows Mina (Fanning), a 28-year-old artist “who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night.”
In the eerie trailer, Mina looks at a wall made entirely of glass. She’s informed that it’s actually a one-way window; every night the group is watched by a sinister audience, and Mina is just the latest addition to the cast.

Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone and its numerous spin-offs and prequels, including 1923 and 1883, have quickly dominated television. While his stories have covered everything from modern crime families to Westerns to military special operations, his latest project alongside showrunner Chad Feehan has proven to be a fascinating story in its own right. Lawmen: Bass Reeves has all the hallmarks of a Sheridan Western, but the true story of the life of Bass Reeves is so dramatic and fascinating on its own that it needs no cinematic embellishment at all to make it compelling.

Alan Ritchson may well be the avatar chosen by Jack Reacher to "blend in with normal people", but the persona chosen by Reacher — 'journeyman actor' — has proven to be quite the eventful road. Ritchson, it turns out, may never have graced our screens in the Prime Video hit series Reacher had he taken the "craft" of acting more seriously when he was handed the keys to the Kingdom of Asgard in an audition for Thor, only to make a mess of his audition and throw away what may have been his once-in-a-lifetime chance, as he told Men's Health in a new profile.

Rebecca Ferguson Calls Denis Villeneuve “Exquisite,” But Says ‘Dune: Messiah’ Needs To Be “Worth It”
As her many online fans have noticed, Rebecca Ferguson is playful, eccentric, sometimes very candid, can turn on a dime, and does not suffer fools. Interviewing her can be like riding a wild bull, a bit unpredictable and disarming, and I found that to be very much the case with my latest interview with her about “Dune: Part Two” (read our review here). The actress, if nothing else, is quite frank and sometimes even blunt about her opinions.

One of the most acclaimed movies of 2023 is coming home: A24 has announced that "The Iron Claw" will be available on Blu-ray and DVD next month. But for those who aren't committed to picking up a physical copy of the film, it is also available to rent on VOD from a variety of digital retailers right now. So there are plenty of options, with even more on the way in the coming months (we'll get to that in a moment).
A24's wrestling drama about the Von Erichs "The Iron Claw" (read /Film's review here) is currently available to rent from retailers such as Apple TV+, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube, among others. It is priced at $19.99 for a 48-hour rental, which is the standard premium VOD price that studios began running with a few years ago. That price typically drops several weeks after the initial Digital release date.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is barely back – this is only the talk show's third episode after the famous host returned – so it’s important to tread lightly in order not to alienate audiences too much. That’s why Jon Stewart and his writing team decided that the subject from this week’s episode should be something light, like the Israel-Palestine conflict, for example. And more than that, the show decided to present some solutions to the ongoing war, since entities like NATO don’t seem too inclined to do so.
