The 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards took awards season one step closer to the Oscars.
The annual PGA Awards happened February 25, immediately following the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The awards-heavy weekend festivities also included the 2024 SAG Awards on February 24.
The nominees mirror the Academy Awards’ frontrunners list, with winner “Oppenheimer,” plus “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Past Lives,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” among the contenders.
Formally known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, the Theatrical Motion Picture category for the PGA Awards has historically been an indicator of Best Picture winners, with 15 of the previous 20 winners going on to win the top title at the Academy Awards.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” director and “Maestro” producer Martin Scorsese was honored with the David O. Selznick Achievement Award for his producing work over the last half-century.

Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, Chuck Roven and their producing team took home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, which recognizes excellence in producing for a theatrical feature film. The prize has become perhaps the most important precursor to nabbing the Academy Award for best picture.

At the end of that first season, Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) had become a full-fledged Night Action agent, flying off to an unknown destination on a mission for the off-the-books intelligence organization. And in Season 2, Night Action life is “going to bring new problems” for Peter, The Night Agent showrunner Shawn Ryan explained to Tudum last year. “One of the reasons we like Peter so much is he’s a rule follower who has such a strict moral code that he lives by. The 2024 SAG Awards allegedly only ran 10 minutes over its two-hour time slot on Saturday, but it felt a whole lot longer.
Unlike most awards shows, the SAG Awards and other guild ceremonies award winners only in their respective disciplines, but that didn’t make the telecast more efficient or memorable in any way. While the room full of nominees and winners were endlessly thankful to their union and outside solidarity during the strikes, the telecast failed to sufficiently honor the talent on display in a worthy manner — that, too, on the show’s 30th anniversary.
And it was no ordinary SAG Awards year for another obvious reason: The telecast aired live on Netflix for the first time ever (including a pre-show hosted by Tan France and Elaine Welteroth). Netflix is one of the only streamers that doesn’t dabble in live TV, so teaming up with the SAG Awards was both surprising and smart.

Saturday Night Live has long been near the center of the culture wars, but not since Donald Trump was the guest host have they courted controversy quite so head-on as this weekend.
Former cast member Shane Gillis (total number of on-air appearances: zero) hosted this week and, given how many people were interested in what he had to say about his firing… surprisingly little was said.

Netflix made clear from the start that they were running a different kind of awards show.
Presenter and quasi-host Idris Elba indicated to the attended nominees that, in their speeches, they were free to let expletives fly, but that none of them should say anything “you wouldn’t say in front of Oprah.” After the SAG Awards had fully moved to streaming — after a liminal year, in 2023, in which the ceremony had aired on Netflix’s YouTube channel, preceded by a long tenure on the Turner cable networks — it felt like a sort of safe space for speaking frankly.

Comedian Shane Gillis has returned to host “SNL” after being fired from the cast in 2019 for having made racist, homophobic and misogynistic remarks.
During the Feb. 24 episode, Gillis didn’t shy away from the elephant in the room but only briefly acknowledged his firing in his opening monologue.
“I’m here,” he said. “Most of you probably have no idea who I am. I was actually — I was fired from this show a while ago. But, you know, don’t look that up, please. If you don’t know who I am, please don’t Google that. It’s fine.

Less than 72 hours before the premiere of Lifetime’s two-part docuseries “Where Is Wendy Williams?,” the former talk show host’s team announced that she has been diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (Ftd), the same disease that Bruce Willis has. Amid the news of Williams’ health crisis — which is immediately evident on the show— this docuseries feels invasive at best and predatory at worst.
“Where Is Wendy Williams?” is designed as a follow-up to her 2021 documentary “Wendy Williams: What A Mess,” which dove into Williams’ public divorce, apparent mental health crisis and other public mishaps. That same year,...

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards have wrapped, and the full SAG winners list shows momentum for Lily Gladstone in the Best Actress race at the Oscars — as well as for “Oppenheimer” and its very possible march toward Best Picture.
“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” led the nominations when they were announced January 10 with four each. “Oppenheimer” ended up winning the most of any film, with three prizes: Best Cast (the top prize), Best Actor Cillian Murphy, and Best Supporting Actor Robert Downey Jr. “Barbie” went home empty-handed.
Lily Gladstone won Best Actress for “Killers of the Flower Moon” over Emma Stone for “Poor Things,” who won the prize at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. Da’Vine Joy Randolph won the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers,” and has pretty much swept that category at every awards show this season.

The Crown is entering a new millennium in Season 6, Part 2 as Peter Morgan’s groundbreaking series comes to an end with its upcoming final six episodes on Dec. 14.
When we left off at the end of Part 1, the British royal family was navigating the aftermath of the sudden deaths of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla) after their fatal car crash in Paris.
Picking up a few months after the tragedy, Part 2 sees Prince William and Prince Harry growing up, with the former (now played by newcomer Ed McVey) pursuing his studies at the University of St. Andrews. It’s time for some royal romance when William meets fellow student Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy) during his time at uni.

Pedro Pascal won the SAG Award for male actor in a drama series thanks to his role on HBO’s “The Last of Us,” but he wasn’t exactly sober when he took the stage to give his acceptance speech. The actor admitted he thought he could get drunk, likely because he didn’t think he would win the SAG Award after “Succession’s” Kieran Culkin won the same category at the Golden Globes and Emmy Awards earlier this year.
“This is wrong for so many reasons,” Pascal told the audience. “I’m a little drunk. I thought I could get drunk.

As these first look photos show, both characters come from polar-opposite worlds. Amy is surrounded by her beige walls, eclectic vases and a hot husband. Danny, on the other hand, comes from humble beginnings and can’t seem to catch a break.

Now nearly, 25 years later, the tantalizing tale is getting another wind, just in time to start daydreaming about our ideal summers away in European blissful ignorance. Since air is invisible, what would airbending look like in real life?
Fans of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” have pondered that question since the announcement of a live-action version of the series. The original Nickelodeon show portrayed Aang’s bending with a bluish, swirling look, but the team behind Netflix’s adaptation had a challenge on their hands when rendering those techniques in three dimensions.
Air, earth, water and fire — the four elements that Aang (Gordon Cormier) needs to master as the Avatar — each needed their own unique look and bending style, accomplished with a mix of both on-set and post-production efforts.

Weeks after David Gail’s death, the actor’s cause of death has been determined to be anoxic-ischemic encephalopathy following resuscitation from cardiopulmonary arrest due to the drug intoxication. That drug intoxication involved amphetamines, cocaine, ethanol, and fentanyl, according to Deadline, which reported the Port Charles alum’s cause of death on Friday. Mary Painter, the 58-year-old’s mother, spoke out about her son’s death in a statement to the site. “It breaks my heart to learn that my son died this way,” she said. “David became reliant on medicine many years ago, after multiple surgeries on his hands and wrists.” Everett Collection Painter said that Gail’s pain prevented him from working for almost a decade, and that only “full disability, physical therapy, and pain medicine” offered relief. “He struggled to stop taking pharmaceuticals and did before turning toward a more Eastern pain management including acupuncture and natural medicines,...
