Celebrating World Health Day and WHO’s 75th anniversary in Kyrgyzstan

World Health Day 2023 marked WHO’s 75th anniversary, as well as the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the WHO Country Office in Kyrgyzstan. Celebrations included an open-air campaign to kick off a year-long celebration of WHO75, organized by the Country Office, together with the Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan.

Friends and partners were invited to join in sports events, games, concerts and competitions, but also to take part in medical consultations offering health advice, vaccination, and blood pressure check-ups.

High-level policy-makers took part in various physical exercises during the event.

The event brought together policy-makers from the Office of the President of Kyrgyzstan, the Ministry of Health, the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in Kyrgyzstan, development agencies, health institutes and civil society organizations.

As part of the campaign, medical consultations and advice on healthy lifestyles were available to all, including tips for quitting smoking, blood pressure measurement, rapid HIV testing and vaccination against hepatitis B and COVID-19.

First aid skills were part of a masterclass run by the Red Crescent Society of Kyrgyzstan.

“WHO has always supported the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and its strategic partner, the Ministry of Health, and has achieved great success.

...I want to thank our local and foreign partners, other United Nations agencies, as well as ordinary health workers for their excellent partnership and support aimed at protecting the health and well-being of the population of Kyrgyzstan,” said Shahin Huseynov, Special Representative of the WHO Regional Director and ad interim Head of the Country Office in Kyrgyzstan.

United Nations agencies like the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) provided consultations on nutrition and shared key information on One Health, food safety and antimicrobial resistance.
