‘A long battle is finally over.’ Ryerson to be renamed Toronto Metropolitan University

While there is joy and relief that the name is being stripped from the school, some Indigenous faculty and students are upset about the renaming process.

The sign at the main student centre on Yonge Street was already being removed Tuesday afternoon as the school takes the name Toronto Metropolitan University.

In a historic gesture toward reconciliation, Ryerson University is rebranding itself as Toronto Metropolitan University, cutting its connection to the man considered to have laid the foundations of the residential school system.

The new name came after years of advocacy by staff, students and community members.
