Access and Authentication

Providing multiple options for full-text access to licensed content is critical to driving usage.  Partnering with library solutions vendors and complying with industry standards are instrumental parts of improving content access. Wiley maintains its commitment to the seamless integration of published content into local systems, in order to promote both on-site and remote, library-sanctioned access. Please see the information below, which outlines the current methods of authentication supported by Wiley Online Library.

Cross-Product Authentication

Please note that there are different authentication methods supported for each of Wiley's major products.   Below is a table which indicates which Wiley product is supported by :

Authentication Tools for Wiley Online Library

Wiley Online Library supports the following authentication methods.

  • IP Range
  • Individual Username and Password
  • Institutional Username and Password
  • Federated Authentication (Shibboleth, OpenAthens, or SAML 2.0)
  • Proxy Products
  • Trusted Proxy Server

IP Range

This is the most popular support access method.  IP ranges can be configured within the Wiley Online Library Administrator Dashboard (instructions here) or by contacting our Customer Service Team for further assistance.  Please note that if a supplied IP range overlaps with that of an existing institution, it will not be accepted.

Extended IP Range access: If you have access to your institution’s campus network (through a VPN or on-campus access), there are options available to extend your access outside of your network:

    • Google CASA: Campus Activated Subscriber Access (CASA) is a Google Scholar initiative to improve access to research off-campus. If you are connected to your campus network (directly or by VPN) and use Google Scholar, Google will remember your institutional affiliation on your device for 60 days so you can continue to access your institution’s licensed content outside the network. This 60-day authentication period is refreshed each time you access Google Scholar from within your campus network.

    • Wiley Online Library account: If you have a registered  Wiley Online Library account and have logged in, while connected to your campus network, your Wiley profile will automatically affiliate with your institution, and you will be able to access your institution’s licensed content by logging in to Wiley Online Library for 60 days. Your affiliation will renew for another 60-day period each time you log in to your Wiley Online Library account while connected to your campus network.

Individual Username and Password

Individual users are free to register for their own Wiley Online Library account.  Please follow the prompts on the new user registration page.

Federated Authentication (Shibboleth, OpenAthens, or SAML 2.0)

Wiley Online Library supports federated authentication through Shibboleth, OpenAthens or SAML 2.0.  To see the list (and to login and authenticate), please visit the Institutional login page

If you are an institution that is a member of the supported federations, but don’t see your institution listed, please fill out this Federated Access Request Form and return it to the contact our Customer Service Team for configuration.

If you do not see your federation on this list, please indicate the federation and institution name, and that you’d like to enable Shibboleth or OpenAthens institutional support, when contacting Customer Service.

Users can login on any page or when they are shown an "access denied" message.  They will simply need to:

  1. Select "Login/Register" in the upper right section of the page
  2. Select "Institutional Login" at the lower right of the login pop-up
  3. Search for your institution or select appropriate federation name from the Shibboleth federation list dropdown
  4. Select the name of your institution
  5. Enter institutional credentials via your single-sign on page which, after authentication, will redirect back to Wiley Online Library

A video demonstration for users is available on the WOL Training Hub.

If you would like federated access disabled for your institution, please contact our Customer Service Team.

For further information, please visit the Federated Authentication FAQ document.

Proxy Products

Institutions can set up publisher sites as databases for Proxy Product access on their end, if required. For those institutions using EZproxy, please visit the Wiley Online Library database stanza page on the OCLC website for a full listing of the stanza.  The latest Wiley-maintained EZproxy stanza, may be downloaded here.

In addition, you must explicitly configure your proxy server to handle HTTPS so that the proxy connection is not lost when the user logs in. If HTTPS handling is not already set up, you need to configure it for SSL

Trusted Proxy Server (TPS) Setup

TPS is available to our Account Managed and Society Services Customers; to discuss TPS set-up and resolve issues, please contact your Account Manager or Society Services Specialist directly.
