“Magnum P.I.” is coming to a close at NBC. The drama series, which was canceled by CBS last year before NBC picked it up, will not continue past the upcoming second part of Season 5.
The decision not to order a sixth season comes past the 50-day mark of the WGA strike and a potential strike by SAG-AFTRA after the actors union’s contract with the AMPTP expires on June 30. That date coincides with the end of the “Magnum P.I.” cast’s deals at NBC. Therefore, to avoid cancelling the show, NBC would have had to either order more episodes without...

You can buy vowels, but you can’t buy the kind of support Vanna White is getting from Wheel of Fortune fans as Sony Pictures Television execs reportedly weigh her future on the long-running game show. Last week, Puck News reported (per Parade) that White is negotiating her Wheel of Fortune contract ahead of host Pat Sajak’s imminent departure and that she has hired celebrity litigator Bryan Freedman, who is pushing for White’s first raise in 18 years. The site also reported that White makes about $3 million a year for her role on the show and that Sajak makes nearly five times that amount. And Freedman is “hitting the pay discrepancy issue hard with Sony, as well as possible gender discrimination with respect to White’s salary,” Puck News added. Christopher Willard/ABC But Sony executives have proposed eliminating White’s position, according to Puck News, and that chatter has fans’ head spinning.

Never Give Up is the title of Tom Brokaw’s new book — and, it seems, his attitude toward his struggle with multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer. The former NBC News anchor, now 83, sat down with his former Today co-host Jane Pauley for an interview that aired on CBS News Sunday Morning on Sunday, June 25. And he reflected on the nearly-decade-long battle he has waged since his 2013 cancer diagnosis. “I’ve had a bad experience,” Brokaw told Pauley. “I kept thinking bad things wouldn’t happen to me. But as I grew older, I began to develop this condition. And what you try to do is control it as much as you can. And I’ve had to change my life in some way.” Brokaw was diagnosed with multiple myeloma at the Mayo Clinic in August 2013, as his then-employer reported the following year. As the clinic explains, multiple myeloma occurs...

Do you remember your first horror movie? I do. I can remember how petrified I was like it was yesterday.
And I’ll never come close to a TV set broadcasting ants racing, thanks to Poltergeist. I’m still too terrified of being sucked in.
My little brother was terrified of Michael Jackson’s Thriller and would cry whenever his name was mentioned. And my son turned sheet white when he first saw Vanessa rip her face off in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
The point is that we’ve all been scared by something on TV or in theaters. Although, some of us seem to enjoy it more than others.

We’ve already got a lot of questions for AMC‘s latest Dead spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City — and the stars are now giving us even more to scratch our heads at. The season premiere on Sunday, June 18, which, by the way, was the cable net’s No. 1 season premiere in the history of the network, led fierce widow Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and her longtime enemy Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) into the concrete jungle. And my, what a jungle it is. Amid New York City’s decay and dead, the unlikely duo faces plenty of walkers, rats, cockroaches, and of course, human threats. For Kelsey Grammer, bringing Frasier Crane back to Boston on an upcoming Paramount+ series isn’t just an opportunity to revive an iconic character. It’s a spiritual calling.
In a new interview with The Independent, Grammer opened up about the impact that playing Frasier Crane through nine seasons of “Cheers” and 11 seasons of “Frasier” has had on his life. He said that he has always tried to use the character to promote virtue and morality — something he hopes the upcoming batch of episodes will continue to do.
“The ethics of ‘Frasier’ – the study of good, let’s say – was important to us,” Grammer said. “It seemed important to all the people that were involved in the original one, and it has remained important in the show today.”

[Editor’s Note: The following story contains spoilers for the “Barry” series finale]
The final season of “Barry” earned rave reviews, with critics praising Bill Hader — who directed all eight episodes — for skillfully guiding his dark comedy towards a fittingly bleak conclusion. But as it turns out, Hader was concerned that things were getting too bleak.
Appearing on an episode of Variety’s “Making a Scene,” Hader explained that he had to reshoot part of the series finale to remove what he came to see as an inappropriate moment of positivity. When NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) kidnaps Sally (Sarah Goldberg) and her son, Barry’s personal life finally collides with his criminal network in an irreversible way. While Hank is eventually murdered by Fuches (Stephen Root), Hader says he originally wanted him to spend some of his last moments bonding with Sally over their shared experiences with Barry.

Magnum P.I. will be working his final cases in the back half of Season 5. Our hearts broke for Jamie Fraser, played subtly and sensitively by Sam Heughan, in Outlander‘s second episode of Season 7, which often touched on the powerful Scottish Highland warrior’s vulnerable side as he suffered loss after loss. We spoke to the actor about the emotional events in our latest installment of the aftershow, Inside Outlander. “He’s having to say goodbye to John Grey [David Berry]; to his daughter [Bree, played by Sophie Skelton]; to his grandchildren. He’s losing a lot and I think that cumulatively wounds him. We always thought Jamie has great fortitude and great strength, but it does have a toll,” Heughan tells us. Check out the video above, where the actor reflects on the farewells; poor Jamie had to endure not one but two goodbyes to Bree, including her and husband Roger’s (Richard Rankin) departure through the stones to get medical treatment for their new baby in the 20th Century.

Turner Classic Movies will lean on Warner Bros. film chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy for library curation and editorial vision, sources told Variety, in wake of the exit of network head Pola Changnon this week.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav had been considering bringing in De Luca and Abdy for some time, insiders said, to rely on their cinephile instincts and shape the best possible programming slate for the channel — one beloved by Hollywood titans and film fans for showcasing of film history.
TCM will still exist with the U.S. Networks Group run by Kathleen Finch.

Who wouldn’t want to sing Kelly-oke to a brand new Kelly Clarkson album? But just be prepared to go to a few darker places, as some of the deeply confessional songs on “Chemistry” come up, many of them prompted by her 2020 divorce from Brandon Blackstock and the events that led up to it. Even if she insists that she put some of the most baldly personal songs she wrote away in a drawer, what’s left is still altogether autobiographical, having been written during some of her darkest days roughly three years ago.

Chris Zucchero, owner of Chicago’s beloved Italian sandwich shop Mr. Beef, is on the “L” trying to get a word in on the phone. He just wrapped up a long two days of catering parties for FX’s “The Bear” Season 2, providing hot Italian beef sandwiches with sweet peppers and spicy giardiniera for Hollywood’s finest.
“The Bear” creator Christopher Storer — who Zucchero has been friends with since kindergarten — based “The Bear” on the classic establishment and shot about 90% of the pilot in Mr. Beef. Storer even cast Zucchero in the pilot as the guy in the parking lot...

Reo Speedwagon’s “Time For Me To Fly” plays out in the very last scene of the final episode of ABC’s long-running sitcom “The Goldbergs.” The 1978 hit plays as the titular family gathers together and imagine what the future will bring.
Mojo Music and Media co-founder and Cco Peter Shane acquired Reo Speedwagon’s publishing catalog in 2019, and because of longstanding relationships with both the band and “The Goldbergs” music supervisor Ann Kline, the process to clearing the song was a swift one.
Having been in the business for over 25 years, Shane’s closest collaborations are with music supervisors.

As Miranda Cosgrove sings in the ear worm that is the iCarly theme song, “Some things are meant to be.” She wasn’t referencing the long-awaited Carly Shay and Freddie Benson romance seen in Season 3 of the iCarly Paramount+ reboot, but isn’t it sweet to think she was? Nathan Kress‘s Freddie spent all of Nickelodeon‘s iCarly confessing his love for the titular character. Now, as adults, he finally got to hear her say it back in Season 3 Episode 4. TV Insider caught up with Cosgrove to ask why Season 3 was the perfect time to make iCarly fans’ #Creddie dreams a reality after eight collective seasons and 16 years of waiting. From where she’s standing, Creddie was always “meant to be,” but it feels so wonderful to see the positive fan reaction to this slow-burn romance that has the potential to be one of TV’s most memorable. ...

Netflix's Break Point returned June 20 with a second batch of to close out its first season, and with it comes a renewed frustration from tennis fans who see a ton of unrealized potential in a docuseries chronicling the men's and women's tennis tours beyond just the headline names. I'm one of those frustrated fans. Conceptually, a series like Break Point is exactly what the sport needs at exactly the right time. Structurally, the show plays like yesterday's news, inviting curious viewers into a set of stories that the sport itself has already blown past.
The Association of Tennis Professionals (Atp) and Women’s Tennis Association (Wta) tours are loaded with interesting stories, compelling personalities, petty feuds, and competition narratives that unfold across a season or longer. And yet it's almost impossible to get the mainstream sports media to cover tennis beyond its handful of legendary headliners and the occasional ascendant American talent.

‘Rap Sh!t’ Music Supervisors Spent Three Months Trying to Clear Drake’s ‘No Friends in the Industry’
Issa Rae’s ‘Rap Sh!t” focuses on female friendships, but also female rappers and the challenges facing women in a male-dominated industry. For music supervisors Sarah Bromberg and Philippe Pierre, that meant pulling together a soundtrack of artists that not only reflected Miami’s rap scene but also the strong ties between its main characters.
In the Max show, Shawna has been chasing fame as a solo rapper, and she reunites with her friend Mia (rapper Kamillion) to form a rap duo. Together they navigate success, friendship and the lively city of Miami.

Can San Diego Comic-Con catch a break?
For two years, the biggest annual fan convention in North America was forced to cancel the five-day gathering due to the Covid-19 pandemic — placing Comic-Con International, the non-profit organization that runs Sdcc, under unprecedented financial strain. Last year, Sdcc came roaring back with a masked-and-vaccinated convention that was a robust success, with blockbuster Hall H panels for the “Star Trek” TV universe, “House of the Dragon,” “The Walking Dead” and, especially, Marvel Studios.
This year’s Comic-Con — which is scheduled to start July 19, less than a month away — is increasingly likely to have none of those panels.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Bear” Season 2, including the ending.]
Richie’s arc in “The Bear” Season 2 is at once the most practical and the most endearing. Prompted by last season’s near-manslaughter scare and buoyed by Olivia Colman’s Episode 7 assurance that it’s “never too late to start over,” Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s character, who was once an obstinate obstacle to change, transforms into a definitive new man. Richie’s reading leads him to realize he doesn’t have a particular set of skills, or otherwise irreplaceable function at work, and if he’s going to provide for his daughter, then he needs a reliable source of income, preferably one that will bring a little happiness, too — whether The Bear succeeds or not.
With a little nudge from Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and a lot of patience from the good folks at Ever, he recognizes that source. He steps up. He finds his purpose.

At the end of Boots Riley’s 2018 debut feature, “Sorry to Bother You,” Cassius (Lakeith Stanfield) gets stretched and mutilated beyond recognition until he becomes a horse — all in service of the film’s cutting narrative about how capitalism is crushing us all. In “I’m a Virgo,” Riley’s new Amazon Prime Video series, that stretching comes before the story begins: 19-year-old Cootie (Jharrel Jerome) is 13 feet tall, and he ends up under attack when the city of Oakland learns about the giant living in its backyard — again, all in service of a cutting narrative about how capitalism is crushing us all.

Max has developed something of a niche in gastronomic entertainment. From Selena Gomez’s Selena + Chef to The Big Brunch hosted by Dan Levy, as well as Magnolia’s Joanna Gaines on Silos Baking Competition, the streaming service has left no appetite unsatisfied. What Am I Eating? With Zooey Deschanel is the latest addition to the celebrity culinary sphere.
Deschanel’s program is a departure from traditional cooking show formats, instead taking on an educational form aimed at debunking food myths and addressing the dilemmas we face when it comes to eating and grocery shopping. “Every time we do something on the show, we learn something,” Deschanel explained in an interview with Variety. “We don’t want to scare anybody about what they’re eating. We want to give people ideas, inspire people and do it in a fun way. This is something people can watch with their kids.”...

Wheel of Fortune is looking forward to a transformation when longtime host Pat Sajak walks away from his gig after the upcoming 41st season of the game show. Could that transformation also see the exit of co-host Vanna White? It seems like Sajak may not be the only one departing as a report from Puck News hints that the show is exploring the idea of “eliminating” the role filled by White altogether. In the report, it’s revealed that White’s annual salary of $3 million hasn’t been raised in nearly 20 years, and she makes almost five times less than Sajak. (Credit: ABC/Ricky Middlesworth) White’s reportedly hired a lawyer, Bryan Freedman, to try and bridge the gap in this pay discrepancy. While Sony TV hasn’t confirmed these reports, according to TV Line, a source close to the show claims there “is no plan to eliminate Vanna’s role,...

Comedian Harry Deansway is suing Steve Coogan’s production company Baby Cow over a comedy series called “Live at the Moth Club,” which he claims rips off his YouTube show “Shambles.”
In his filing, Deansway, whose real name is Joshua Rinkoff, describes “Shambles” as a sitcom “centered around a live comedy night” at a run-down club struggling to make ends meet. If you ever wondered what The Hangover could look like as a movie for the whole family, the new Disney Original Movie The Slumber Party is it. TV Insider is exclusively unveiling a first look at the trailer (which you can watch above) for the coming-of-age comedy, which will premiere on Thursday, July 27 at 8/7c on Disney Channel (and will be available to stream the next day on Disney+). Based on Jen Malone’s YA novel The Sleepover, the film shows the hilarious aftermath of a birthday party hypnotism gone wrong after friends decide to go big, have fun, and do something they never had before. As you can see in the video, best friends Megan (Darby Camp) and Paige (Emmy Liu-Wang), along with soon-to-be step-sister Veronica (Alex Cooper Cohen), wake up with no memory of the night before — but the (much) bigger problem is the birthday girl, Anna Maria (Valentina Herrera), is missing.

NBC News stalwart Tom Brokaw is doing some of his deepest confessional talking this Sunday via CBS News.
Brokaw talks to longtime friend Jane Pauley, who anchors “CBS News Sunday Morning,” and tells her about his battle with incurable blood cancer, which he has been fighting for a decade. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma ten years ago.
“I’ve had a bad experience,” Brokaw tells Pauley of his illness. “I kept thinking bad things wouldn’t happen to me. But as I grew older, I began to develop this condition. And what you try to do is control it as much as you can.
