This entry gives the total number of airports with paved runways (concrete or asphalt surfaces). Only airports with usable runways are included in this listing. Not all airports have facilities for refueling, maintenance, or air traffic control. The length of a runway required for aircraft to safely operate depends on a number of factors including the type of aircraft, the takeoff weight (including passengers, cargo, and fuel), engine types, flap settings, landing speed, runway gradient, elevation of the airport, and average maximum daily air temperature. Paved runways can reach a length of 5,000 m (16,000 ft.), but the “typical” length of a commercial airline runway is between 2,500-4,000 m (8,000-13,000 ft.). Smaller, lighter, and slower aircraft require less runway length. The US Federal Aviation Administration states that smaller aircraft with approach speeds of 30-50 knots should use 244 m (800 ft.) at mean sea level. Light business jets and turboprops need a runway length of 1,500 m (5,000 ft.) at mean sea level. Heavy commercial jets require at least 1,800 m (6,000 ft.) at mean sea level if its weight is below 90,718 kg. (200,000 lbs.).
