The two IAS and IPS officers suspended following a brawl in Ajmer district allegedly used hockey sticks and lathis to beat up hotel staff in the presence of policemen. Describing the alleged incident on June 11, the hotel staff said they had no idea of who the two officers were until the incident drew attention and the police filed an FIR.
“We want strong action (against them,” said Narayan Singh, the owner of Makrana Raj Hotel and Restaurant, where the alleged brawl took place.
IAS officer Girdhar and IPS officer Sushil Kumar Bishnoi, both from the 2019 civil services batch, were suspended Tuesday after clamour against them grew and members of the Rajput community in the district stepped in.
Prior to their suspension, Girdhar was posted as the Ajmer Development Authority Commissioner Girdhar and Bishnoi was an Officer on Special Duty with the Gangapur City police.
ASI Roopa Ram and constable Mukesh Yadav of Gegal police station were also suspended over the incident.
With the state vigilance department probing the incident, Food and Civil Supplies Pratap Singh Khachariyawas slammed the two officers saying “newly appointed IAS-IPS” officers had no right to take the law in their hands.
“The two IPS and IAS officers have committed a wrong…. these new IPS-IAS, they shouldn’t be in (a state of) frustration… When some become officers, they start indulging in wrongdoings with the power of the police…,” Khachariyawas said Wednesday.
Caught on CCTV, a video of the brawl Sunday night showed the two officers and the hotel staff trading blows.
Describing the alleged incident, Bhupendra Singh, a hotel staff member who said he was present during the brawl, told The Indian Express the first brawl took place near the hotel’s parking area.
“We were in our rooms… Around 2am, Umesh, one of our fellow staff members, went to the washroom. Some people who were travelling in two cars parked the vehicles at the parking and also went to the washroom. On seeing Umesh, who was coming out, they slapped him and asked him why he was wearing a banyan (vest). Umesh came inside and told us about this… we went out to confront the men but they started beating us up and even pelted stones,” said Singh.
Singh said the hotel staff informed the police about the incident. The police, he added, arrived at the hotel and went looking for the two officers “but came back with the same men who had assaulted us”.
“One of the policemen, ASI Roopa Ram from the Gegal police station, abused us and said ‘How dare you assault an IPS officer?’” Singh said.
According to Tejpal Singh, another hotel staff based on whose complaint the FIR was filed the next day, the police and the two officers then took the hotel staff to a room and again beat them up.
“They beat us with hockey sticks and lathis used by policemen. Both the IAS and IPS officers were beating us in the presence of the police,” Tejpal said.
The FIR, registered under IPC sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 143 (unlawful assembly) doesn’t name any of the accused.
When The Indian Express contacted IPS officer Sushil Kumar, he declined to comment and cited the ongoing probe. IAS officer Girdhar couldn’t be reached despite calls and messages.
Rajasthan ADGP, Vigilance, Biju George Joseph told The Indian Express on Wednesday his department is conducting a probe into the incident.
“A team of officials has reached Ajmer from Jaipur to investigate further,” Joseph said.
