Before gaining acclaim as one of the most talented actors in contemporary Tamil cinema, SJ Suryah was widely recognised as a filmmaker who could strike the right chord.

While he initially started his film career with minor roles that often went unnoticed, Suryah’s breakthrough came in 1999 when he directed the psychological romantic thriller Vaalee, which propelled actor Ajith Kumar to remarkable heights.

Building upon his triumphs, SJ Suryah extended his success by writing and directing Kushi (2000), a film that not only achieved acclaim but transcended boundaries as it was remade in Telugu and Hindi. He further directed films such as Naani (2004), New (2004), Anbe Aaruyire (2005), which also marked his debut as an actor with a credited role, Puli (2010) and Isai (2015).

After a hiatus of eight years, the actor-filmmaker recently announced his return to the director’s chair. “The film, titled Killer, is in its final stages of pre-production,” SJ Suryah revealed during an interview with Galatta Plus. He said that he will play the lead role as well in the movie. “Currently, I am anticipating the fulfilment of my acting obligations. It is probable that the film will begin production next year.”

Suryah is now gearing up for the release of his upcoming movie Bommai, directed by Radha Mohan. The film is set to hit theatres on June 16.

Though Bommai’s shooting was wrapped in 2020, the makers faced a delay in its release due to the onset of Covid. Although the movie’s trailer was unveiled last June, it took the crew an additional year to get the film ready for its theatrical debut. Referring to this, Suryah, who also co-produced the film, said, “Bommai has been ready for the past year and a half, but I patiently awaited the perfect timing. I aimed for a two-week window when people’s schedules were free from other distractions, and there were no competing major projects vying for attention. I wanted to ensure that the audience had the opportunity to fully embrace a new film without any rush or external pressures.”

SJ Suryah, who prefers listening to narrations to reading scripts, expressed his admiration for Bommai director Radha Mohan’s storytelling prowess. Suryah remarked, “Being captivated or falling in love with a mannequin is often perceived as something with strokes of grey. However, director Radha Mohan skillfully infused a beautiful love story into this grey realm, incorporating thrilling elements. When he narrated the story to me, I was exhilarated. It allowed me to witness the immense potential of a filmmaker who previously crafted notable works like Mozhi and Abhiyum Naanum.”

Elaborating on his acting style, Suryah stated, “I do not adhere to any specific acting techniques. When a character presents itself to me, my sole criterion is whether I resonate with the story. If I do, I willingly surrender myself to the character, allowing it to guide me throughout the journey. I have never done, and will never do, a film solely for financial gain!”

Expressing his aspiration to be a part of a pan-India endeavour in the future, the actor-filmmaker added, “My career is going perfectly now, though it has not reached the destination. However, it is heading in the right direction. My ultimate dream is to create a piece of art that resonates with Indians in all corners of the country and the world.”
