Patriots coach Bill Belichick took responsibility for the team’s violation of offseason rules. The Patriots lost two organized team activities — practices on May 25 and May 30 — and Belichick was fined $50,000.

“The whole situation is in the past. It’s resolved, and we’ve moved on,” Belichick said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN. “It was three meetings [in Phase 2 of the offseason program]. . . . I’m responsible for it, so that’s it.”

The Patriots held special teams workshops led by assistant Joe Judge that resulted in players spending more than the four hours they are allowed at the team facility. Belichick, though, wouldn’t provide any details or even confirm Judge’s official title.

He did, however, have his assistant coach’s back in his first comments since the penalties were reported last week.

“Joe is great. Smart guy. Has a lot of experience,” Belichick said. “He’ll do whatever we need him to do, and he can do a lot. So, he will.”

Belichick cracked a joke when asked about losing two OTAs.

“We had a good, long weekend,” he said.

According to Reiss, former NFL player Andy Studebaker attended the Patriots’ OTA on Wednesday as a representative of the Players Association.

  1. Once…twice…three times a cheater, always a cheater. It’s the Patriots way.

  2. Well, of course. He is responsible responsible. He knew the rules, and thought he was above them. And he usually is

  3. Really looking forward to today’s show to cover this story and the other news topics. Its essential listening for me in order to improve my appreciation of the sport heading into the new season.
    Great work,
    Rory

  4. Glad he enjoyed his “good, long weekend” because it looks like they are heading toward a bad, long season. Every other team in the AFCE has gotten remarkably better.

  5. well isnt that sweet of him. hes the gm and head coach of course he should take responsibility. duh…..oh wait, the league is out to get the patriots, those rascally little devils..

  6. Remember when Belichick knew every jot and tittle of the rulebook? The game passes all of us by eventually.

  7. Love how when this thrilling tale first broke PFT pointed out all the other teams that have violated these rules just in recent years — and usually in a material way by holding more full contact sessions rather than a few 15 minute meetings — yet the commentariat still is all “Dahhh only the Patriots cheat like this.”. Hilarious.

  8. He’s new and still getting the hang of things. He’ll figure it out eventually.

In all seriousness, I think we’re finished as a society. How childish is it to consider something “cheating” or bad because your meeting ran 15 minutes later than you expected?

The Millenials and GenZ are mortifying and will be the end of the country.

All of a sudden hard work is frowned upon. And, if you notice all these new rules since 2006 are meant to throw what NE is really good at, or seen as “advantages” due to said hard work, totally of their program.

These are not coincidences. All of these rules are setup to attack what NE is known to do very well, and those are seen as “advantages”. It’s dumbing it down to appease the weak.

The reason why no rational person considers these accusationas as cheating, is because these supposed violations are conjured up and painted as such for the FIRST TIME ever.

Think about that. It’s only if NE does something is it made up and painted as such. We have no idea if any oher team’s meetings went late. They probably have and we’ll never know.

  10. Great leaders take the hit for their teams and support them through challenging times. Belichick will always take the heat.

Nobody knows the conversations that take place behind closed doors.

  11. There’s no double standard is there? Peyton Manning said he preferred his footballs to be over inflated…Non story the comment was completely ignored….Aaron Rodgers said the same thing…Non story the comment was completely ignored…While Manning was recovering from neck surgery he was linked to a Growth Hormone scandal, but claimed it was for his wife…The league ignored it, and basically refused to investigate it after spending millions looking into air pressure violations linked to Tom Brady…The Patriots walked all over the NFL for over 20 years which has infuriated many fans who are now blinded with ignorance

  12. Saying that “you take responsibility” is not the same as actually taking responsibility where you explain the circumstances.

  13. guess ol billy boy should “read the rulebook”.. as someone unnamed commenter on here loves to say..bwahhaaaaaahahaha

I don’t remember BB taking the heat when his defense coughed up two SBs by allowing Eli to score TDs with under 2:00 remaining in both SBs against the Giants. I also don’t recall him taking the heat for refusing to put Malcom Butler in the game as he watched Nick Foles carve up the Pats defense the entire game

So when exactly has he taken the heat?

Why didn’t Brady perform to standards in either postseason or conf title games from 2007-2012 after meeting Giselle?

The games are 60 mins, not 2 mins.

BB always has fallen on the sword which is why players love playing for him.

Why didn’t Brady take heat for being absolutely awful in those postseasons with full autonomy?

The circumstances were that a short meeting went over the allotted time. The fact that so many want to call this “cheating” gets tiresome. I’m not a Pats fan, but anyone who thinks every NFL team isn’t breaking rules is foolish.

It’s not even a known rule. That’s the hypocrisy of the frauds. Regrouping for teaching points after practice is now “cheating”.

This country has just gone right down into the sewer.

Brady played awful against the Eagles? He has 505 yards of passing! Do you even watch the games?

As for the two games against the Giants, Brady took a beating and yet still drive the team down to take the lead after the first 58 minutes of the game. It was BB’s defense that folded because they couldn’t play the entire 60 minutes.
