Servicio Nacional de Representación Legal de los Derechos de la Víctima (RELEVIC)

RELEVIC is composed of a staff of attorneys, MDs, social workers and family therapists, many of whom speak English.  AmCits who are visiting or living in the DR are eligible to receive the services.  They provide help during the legal process with all legal paperwork and accompany the victims to file their complains.  Their services are offered pro bono to low income victims.

Asociación Tú Mujer

Goal: Main projects refer to health and legal assistance for women survivors from violence; education, adult female literacy and citizenship. Asociación Dominicana Pro-Bienestar de la Familia (PROFAMILIA)

Goal: Profamilia works constantly in assuring the right of every person/family to be protected against rape, assault, abuse and sexual harassment. They assist women, children and adolescents survivors from gender violence and have created an “Emotional Support Unit” (Unidad de Apoyo Emocional) who supports victims of domestic violence and other crimes and receive them at two different clinics: Rosa Cisneros in Santiago and Evangelina Rodriguez in Santo Domingo. They don’t deal with attackers or persons with any type of addiction.

Do not consume alcoholic beverages alone or with new acquaintances you may meet while in the Dominican Republic. Do not leave drinks unattended. This can put you at risk for date rape drugs and sexual assault. Victims have been assaulted while in isolated or compromising situations, sometimes by resort employees or other tourists. Call 911 and/or report any unwanted attention to hotel management. Insist that hotel management take immediate action to involve appropriate authorities such as contacting the police. In more remote areas of the country where 911 is not yet functional, see above for more detailed local emergency contact information.

Swimming areas at some popular beaches are subject to dangerous undertows. Many beaches lack lifeguards, warnings, or signs of unsafe conditions. U.S. citizens have died in the Dominican Republic due to these dangers. Check with your hotel, as resort managers usually offer current information on local swimming and surf conditions. Do not swim alone, particularly at isolated beaches.

Be aware of the risks associated with cosmetic surgery in the Dominican Republic. U.S. citizens have suffered serious complications or died during or after having cosmetic surgery in the Dominican Republic, including from complications and infections detected only after departure from the Dominican Republic. Verify the credentials and qualifications of any plastic surgeon and discuss post-surgical care and the detection and management of post-surgical infection prior to any procedure. • Enroll with the Smart Travelers Enrollment Program (STEP) and receive all important notifications by e-mail.
• Ensure your passport is valid. Re-new your passport today!
• Gather all vital documents into a secure location and make photocopies which you keep separately.
• Remain informed by watching the news, reading newspapers, and referring to the State Department Dominican Republic Travel Information and Alerts and Messages.
• Leave your itinerary and contact information with family/friends at home.
• Arrange for regular communications with family/friends through email or phone calls.
