Black Young Men Building Capacity (BYMBC) reflects a collaborative partnership between Vanderbilt University and First Response Center (FRC), a 501(c)3, non-profit HIV/AIDS prevention and care organization of Metropolitan Interdenominational Church to develop a capacity building initiative for substance abuse and HIV prevention for African American men who have sex with other men (MSM) ages 18-24 in Nashville, Tennessee. The initiative will be targeted to prevent and reduce the onset of substance use, reduce sexual risk factors to prevent new HIV and VH infection occurrences, and decrease HIV transmission among the population of focus.

The purpose of the Regents project is to expand capacity for delivering evidence-based approaches to substance abuse and HIV/AIDS prevention, engage UCSF psychiatric nurse practitioner students and Larkin Street Youth Services staff in ongoing training efforts as part of a clinic, and conduct a performance evaluation documenting the impact of this effort. The Regents anticipate activity to include: (1) screening; (2) psychiatric case management; and (3) implementation of an evidence-based Street Smart group intervention. The population of focus is over 3,450 homeless and marginally housed youth (ages 13-24) in San Francisco.

The Missouri Institute of Mental Health at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL-MIMH) will deliver a 6-week integrated substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis prevention intervention to African American youth ages 13-24 in St. Louis City and County. The intervention will serve a total of 960 participants across the lifetime of the project. The project is also designed to promote positive prevention messages and to change community norms via the social marketing campaigns. The proposed prevention intervention is replicated from two UMSL-MIMH SAMHSA funded programs - Girls Holla Back! and FACE-UP (Families and Communities Empowered-Understanding Prevention).
