One would think, in terms of adapting things for the small screen, we’d have exhausted the literary canon by now. Every Jane Austen novel has been done to death, and the Brontë sisters are relatively close behind. It’s likely that every major author prior to 1900 has seen their work brought to the silver screen (either on film or television) at some point, and I can count on one hand the amount of books I read for my degree that I haven’t seen on TV. But so long as we can still find kernels of truth in stories from two hundred years ago, it’s likely they’ll continue — which is precisely where Masterpiece’s adaptation of Tom Jones comes in.

Viewers cannot get enough of dystopian TV series. With the recent series release of HBO's The Last of Us, that obsession is still going strong. Whatever the appeal of watching these shows may be, whether it is an awful future with a tyrannical government like in the series The Handmaid's Tale or the collapse of civilization in the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the genre of dystopia has its ominous hooks in viewers.

Sometimes the tabloid mindset can push rabid fans down serious rabbit holes. One of the more recent examples of this was actress Mila Kunis having lunch with “Fantastic Four” director Matt Shakman (“WandaVision“), who is notably friends with a bunch of Hollywood industry people such as recognizable actors like Kunis. Well, despite famous people often lunching together in Los Angeles the meet-up in February sparked a wave of online casting rumors that Kunis was being courted for the female lead role of Sue Storm, and even less believable rumor she’s up for Ben Grimm, aka, The Thing.

Lizzie Borden thought — or hoped, at least — that her debut film Born in Flames would have felt obsolete by now. Released in 1983 (but shot and edited over five years with whatever spare change she could scrounge up), Born in Flames’ call to collective action rings disturbingly clear in the contemporary sociopolitical climate, ultimately proving the optimist in Borden wrong. “I did not expect Born in Flames to be relevant today,” she told Mubi in 2021. “I thought that those women’s issues expressed in the film would be resolved. But that’s clearly still not the case. They are ongoing and in some cases, it’s worse.”...

With four "John Wick" movies, "The Matrix" franchise, "Constantine," and "Point Break" under his belt, Keanu Reeves is a true action star. No one — fight me on this — has a more soulful look in his eyes while absolutely physically decimating someone. It's like Reeves' characters take fights like they were blows to his emotions rather than his kidneys.
It's clear from his film choices, including his directing and starring in "Man of Tai Chi," that physicality is an important aspect of performance for Reeves. He recently spoke about it on an episode of "The Art of Action," talking about his history with movement and sports and how it allows him to explore the physicality of a character. It's something you learn in acting class (that you don't always see on screen), the idea of connecting your emotions to movement. It has been five years since the last season of The Originals (2013-2018) aired, but it still draws attention and viewership from fans and even new audiences, thanks to its high ratings. The first major spin-off of The Vampire Diaries series and adapted from the eponymous novels by L.J. Smith, The Originals is based on the character Klaus from the books and created for The CW by Julie Plec. Plec is also best known for creating, developing, writing, producing, and being the showrunner for The Vampire Diaries as well as for The Originals. The spin-off series is also considered to be the first television expansion of the franchise from its parent show. The Originals follows the vampire-werewolf hybrid, Klaus Mikaelson, and his power-hungry, thousands-of-years-old family who settle down in the French Quarter of New Orleans. With a goal to take back the city they built ages ago, the family gets...

Editor's note: The following contains Sisu spoilers. After making a buzz in film festivals, Sisu is finally available in theaters. Written and directed by Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander (Rare Exports), Sisu has been charming audiences with its simple but effective concept of killing World War II Nazis in the most creative ways. And those who watch Sisu in theaters will realize the movie delivers everything it promises, as the non-stop violence against Nazis offers an unforgettable thrill ride. However, Sisu does much more than give us ultraviolence and catharsis. Thanks to Helander's brilliant direction, Sisu is also a masterclass on the “show, don’t tell” storytelling rule.

Audiences are eagerly awaiting Marvel's next movies, especially with the news buzzing about the villains entering this enchanted universe and merging storylines from previous Marvel movies.

The Roy family on HBO's "Succession" has a lot of issues, but slime puppy Roman, played by Kieran Culkin, may be the one with the most problems. The COO of Waystar Royco is known for his jagged snark, but his quick and mean wit is clearly a cover-up for his deep-seated insecurities about his relationships and sexuality. The character started off as a sociopathic bully at the beginning of the series, but he's grown in complexity since then, displaying a more tender side that explains his cruelties as more of a defense mechanism than a source of pleasure. However, there is one detail about Roman in the pilot episode that has remained mysterious. What happened to his wife and/or girlfriend and her kid that we never saw or heard from again?

In the vast tapestry that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies — based on the comics by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning — filled the role of "quirky outsiders." This is a gargantuan feat, given the number of gods, aliens, monsters, and other extraordinary beings found throughout the series. The team consisted of a single human being, Peter (Chris Pratt) who was abducted by a UFO as a child, and had eventually fallen into a family-like relationship with a team of mutants and alien warriors. There was Rocket Raccoon (voice of Bradley Cooper), a talking tree named Groot (Vin Diesel), a deadly assassin named Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), her mostly-mechanical sister Nebula (Karen Gillen), a literal-minded bruiser named Drax (Dave Bautista), and the gentle psychic Mantis (Pom Klementieff).

Somewhere in the universe exists perhaps the boldest and most challenging film ever printed. It centers around one of the worst human atrocities in world history, the Holocaust, and it is told by one of the great artistic minds, but one who specialized in screwball comedy. The Day the Clown Cried was completed among all facets of production in 1972 but was ultimately shelved. Now deceased, Jerry Lewis vowed that his maverick film that dealt with the horrors of Jewish people imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp never see the light of day. By various accounts, the original film may never be seen by a mass audience. The longer Lewis' film remains a piece of lost media, the further the legend will grow surrounding it.

One day in the distant future, horror fans are going to have a rude awakening. Eventually, every single idea that Stephen King has ever committed to the page is going to be adapted into a film or television series; it's inevitable. But until that sad day comes, let's all continue to focus on what spooky King property is coming down the pipeline next.
The sparse but undeniably creepy short story "The Boogeyman" from the "Night Shift" collection is being adapted by director Rob Savage from a script by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, scribes for "A Quiet Place". Originally, the movie was set to premiere on Hulu this year until a well-received test screening and a winning endorsement from King himself convinced Disney's 20th Century Studios to release the film theatrically.

Because the characters in "Star Trek" tend to mark the passage of time by Stardates, it takes some delving by resourceful Trekkies to find when the various "Trek" shows take place on the Gregorian calendar. "Star Trek: The Next Generation," said Trekkies have found, began in the year 2364 and lasted until 2370. "Star Trek: Generations" took place in '71, "First Contact" in '73, "Insurrection" in '75, and "Nemesis" in '79. After a well-documented 15 years with the "Next Generation" cast, it seemed that they would move on with their lives and audiences would no longer be privy to their adventures.
Of course, that all changed in 2017 with the launch of CBS All Access, later renamed Paramount+, and the sudden abundance of "Star Trek" the new streaming platform wanted to provide. Many new "Star Trek" shows were put into production, including "Star Trek: Picard," a series about the off-duty shenanigans experienced by the...

Lisa Cortés’s richly enjoyable film examines the alter egos and queer theories surrounding a conflicted star who was way ahead of his time
If Little Richard Aka Richard Wayne Penniman, was criminally underrated for much of his career, his legacy has burned bright since his death in May 2020. Meanwhile, the Dee Rees exec-produced Little Richard: I Am Everything, which premiered at Sundance back in January, is in UK cinemas.
Unsurprisingly, there’s significant crossover between the docs in terms of archive footage and interviewees (Nile Rogers tells pretty much the same story in both – about David Bowie wanting to sound the way Little Richard looked). The Hateful Eight Extended Version — the miniseries recut from Quentin Tarantino's original 2015 film — is back on Netflix this week. As Tarantino told SlashFilm shortly after the series' initial release in April 2019, the project came about when Netflix approached him directly, wanting to know if there was even more footage available beyond the 70 mm roadshow cut and whether it could be reworked into a short series. So the director, alongside the film's original editor Fred Raskin, got to work, recutting the film into four episodes of about 50 minutes each, which streamed until January of this year. In honor of its re-release, let's explore: how different is it from the original, and is it worth watching?...

Life and art certainly do imitate each other sometimes, and that beautiful kind of synergy is happening right now on the third season of "Ted Lasso." The sports landscape has started to change in recent years, with more and more athletes feeling comfortable divulging their sexuality publicly and largely being embraced for doing so. In episode three, Colin (Billy Harris) thinks it's time to come out, and the series handles it with a great deal of sensitivity, introducing us to Colin's partner Michael (Luke Ashton) in a very sweet exchange. In a show that's largely about acceptance and positivity, it's about time for a moment like this to be given proper attention, and the show is better for it.

In the span between "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002 and the most recent season of "Star Trek: Picard," several dramatic events took place. It seems that Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) finally took a chance on their will-they-won't-they flirtation that was never fully explored during their seven seasons together on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." About 20 years before the events of "Picard," the couple took a chance and had a single night of wild passion. Immediately afterward, however, they both decided that it had always been a bad idea. A love affair, a marriage, or any kind of relationship likely wouldn't work. Perhaps predictably, the night of passion begat a child.
Jean-Luc, however, had such a busy and dangerous job — captaining a starship constantly puts one's life at risk and takes up every waking hour — that Dr. Crusher chose to never tell him about their child.

You want to know what the best thing about childhood is? At some point, it stops.” Malcolm in the Middle premiered on January 9, 2000. With the new millennium, came a new family comedy, one more honest yet outlandish than the family sitcoms viewers had watched for decades–no laugh track, no sappy group hugs, no sanctimonious moral to impose on its characters and viewers, just chaos, the chaos that comes from having four kids, each wild and rambunctious, and two parents trying to get by on the little money they make from their unglamorous jobs.

From the mind of YouTube personality Mark Fischbach (better known online to his tens of millions of subscribers as Markiplier) comes Iron Lung, a claustrophobic sci-fi horror movie said to take place entirely on board a small submarine. Fischbach began his YouTube career in 2012, quickly finding his niche in video game play-throughs including popular franchises such as Five Nights at Freddy's (which is getting its own adaptation this year). In 2022, Fischbach uploaded a play-through of the immersive horror video game Iron Lung. Recent years have seen a few films and TV series try to buck the stereotypes established by early Hollywood tales of Vikings, with Robert Eggers’s The Northman joining the likes of The Last Kingdom and the History Channel’s Vikings. While these have made strides, the most accurate Viking movie ever made is the Icelandic tale of revenge When the Raven Flies (Hrafninn Flýgur). Set in the 9th century, director Hrafn Gunnlaugsson drew inspiration from movies like Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo and Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars as well as the Icelandic sagas in a bid to replace the Hollywood image of Vikings with something truer to life.

Almost thirty years ago, Barry Sonnenfeld’s Get Shorty made its inauspicious debut in theaters. Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight, and the short-lived TV series Karen Sisco and Maximum Bob were all based on Leonard’s works and all came out within the same five-year span in the late 1990s. In the early 2000s, J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Carlton Cuse created a groundbreaking broadcast television show that trapped viewers in its ever-expanding mythology. Lost debuted in 2004, with a pilot that caught the attention of the world, and quickly became a sci-fi sensation with a very passionate fandom. Lost posed an infinite number of questions that, given an early final three-season renewal, most fans were expecting to be answered. Nevertheless, when the sixth and final season was released, week after week more questions were raised and not enough answers were delivered in the end. Reception of the series finale was and continues to be divisive, making it to some best and worst finale lists of the audience. In retrospect, Lost’s final season wasn’t about getting answers, at least not mainly. It was about wrapping up our beloved characters’ stories through the unique dual-timeline storytelling device that was the core of the show.

The best sci-fi movies emphasize the 'science' in science fiction, extrapolating real-world principles to their logical conclusion to create a believable vision of the future. Unfortunately, most films in the genre fall short of this ideal. Either for narrative convince or a lack of research, some Sci-Fi movies just aren't all that tethered to the "science" part of the genre's name.

Listen, what I'm about to tell you should be no surprise to two groups: hardcore "Star Wars" nerds and the terminally ancient fanboy, both terms which describe your dedicated writer. But something to consider is that "Star Wars" fandom has evolved since I was a kid. The original trilogy is no longer the agreed-upon "Star Wars" gold standard anymore. You have the kids who grew up on the prequels, and they prefer those films, much to the frustration of us oldies.

James Corden, the host of CBS' The Late Late Show since 2015, has called it quits to return to his native England and spend more time with his extended family. Although Corden is the fourth host to sit behind the desk of the after hours entertainment program since its debut in 1995, he's arguably the most memorable of all the show's moderators. Following in the footsteps of David Letterman, who re-imagined night owl broadcasting with his slightly off-center perspective and hilariously odd segments like Stupid Pet Tricks and Stupid Human Tricks, Corden brought more than just commentary and comedy to night owl broadcasting, infusing his show with Broadway-style razzle and dazzle that showcased his musical performance talents.

Now more than ever, studios and filmmakers enjoy announcing movies way, way ahead of time. We're talking massive slates of films that won't hit cinemas for even up to five years. Sometimes directors have passion projects that they work on for what feels like forever, repeatedly pushing it back because it just doesn't seem ready yet, which is understandable. We would all much rather have that than a half-baked vision, rushed out just to get the next thing rolling.

With the latest entry in the "John Wick" franchise, director Chad Stahelski pushed himself and his team beyond anything they'd done before. "John Wick: Chapter 4" is three hours long and packed with more elaborate action than any of the previous three entries in the saga -- which is saying something.
This latest entry seemingly lurched from one set-piece to another, providing ever more inventive ways to punish its protagonist and showcase some stylish combat in the process. There was the infamous back-breaking staircase scene in Paris, which saw John Wick battle his way to the top of a staircase leading to the Sacré-Cœr, only to fall all the way back down and have to start over. That followed another memorable set-piece that involved John Wick fighting waves of attackers amidst speeding traffic at the Arc de Triomphe -- an outlandish scene that even prompted Keanu Reeves to wonder if...

When Family Matters debuted on ABC in 1989 as part of the network's Friday night Tgif lineup, it was a show much different from the one it would become. As a spinoff of the popular series Perfect Strangers, Family Matters stood out from most other sitcoms of the day by focusing on an all Black cast. These characters didn't fall into 80s stereotypes, but were well-thought-out people. There was Carl Winslow (Reginald VelJohnson), a lovable Chicago cop, and his wife, Harriette (Jo Marie Payton). With them lived Harriette's widowed sister, Rachel (Telma Hopkins), and her young son, Richie (Bryton James), as well as Carl's elderly mother, Estelle (Rosetta LeNoire).

Being the accomplished actor that he is, it's been a while since Woody Harrelson has done a full-blown comedy. Though he got his start in the timeless and successful comedic sitcom Cheers (1982-1993), he's since proven he's got impressive acting chops outside of the genre, with incredible dramatic performances as seen in projects like True Detective Season 1 (2014) and Natural Born Killers (1994). It's also been quite a while since we've seen a new film from Bobby Farrelly, one half of the famed Farrelly brothers with his sibling Peter Farrelly. Peter has been hard at work on other feature film projects such as Green Book (2018) and The Greatest Beer Run Ever (2022) while Bobby has been more invested in TV projects like Trailer Park Boys (2016-2018) and Loudermilk (2018-2020), but now, Bobby Farrelly has also directed his first feature film since Dumb and Dumber To (2014). That film is Champions, a new feel-good comedy...

This post contains spoilers for the 2020 novel "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," as well as the "Hunger Games" movies.
Just to keep expectations grounded, it should be stated ahead of time: it's unlikely that the upcoming "Hunger Games" prequel movie will be as big of a hit as the original series. That doesn't mean it'll be bad -- it's just that the source material is slower and less action-packed than any of the books in the original trilogy, which puts the odds of a big box office success firmly out of its favor.
The book is centered around a young Coriolanus Snow (played by Tom Blyth in the film), long before he became the Capitol President who'd make Katniss's life a living hell. This premise takes a lot of the usual tension out of the story because even though characters do die in the book, the protagonist himself is never in danger.

Katharine Hepburn was undoubetdly a prototype of Feminism during the Golden Age of Hollywood, well-known for eshewing conventions in dressing and behaviour. Whilst her 'box office poison' status may have been related to these transgressions, directors such as George Stevens of Woman of the Year and George Cukor of Adam's Rib ignored the naysayers and created timeless classics led by the celebrated actress. These two comedies show the New Woman in a very different light, the former showcasing what might be considered a more 'performative' feminism, the latter, a glowing depiction of a woman fighting for a cause she believes in. All this, while trying to satisfy man's man, Spencer Tracy.

De-aging tech has received its share of criticism, and rightly so. In our nostalgia-mad monoculture, being able to digitally rewind the physical effects of time seems like a neat trick that can, and kind of has, only been used as a gimmick. In recent years we've seen de-aging tech creep further into movie-making and so far it's yet to really prove its worth. There was the time Corridor Crew did a better job than Lucasfilm of deep-faking young Luke Skywalker. Then Martin Scorsese tried de-aging Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, and Joe Pesci for "The Irishman" — a fascinating project that ultimately ended up feeling a bit uncanny, especially when DeNiro performed a fight scene as a 30-something version of himself who moved with all the aggression and vigor of a semi-conscious toddler waking up from a nap.

With a new Robert Downey Jr.-led remake of Vertigo reportedly on the way, its mere existence is enough to remind you of a time when Hitchcock spin-offs, sequels, and remakes were much more commonplace. That’s right – it’s time to go back to the 1990s. It’s unclear why there were so many Hitchcock remakes during the Clinton years, but there were a ton – including a revamped Rebecca.

When it comes to issues of race and representation in cinema, all eyes are on Hollywood, and rightfully so. Unlike many other territories, North America is home to an incredibly diverse mix of people from all walks of life. Therefore, it only makes sense that its film industry accurately reflects this. Indeed, as the decades have gone by, the inclusion of diversity on screen has gradually improved. Thanks to films like Minari, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and series such as Never Have I Ever, Asians are finally planting their feet firmly in Hollywood soil, but this wasn’t always the case, even as recently as twenty years ago.

Clint Eastwood has one of the most iconic and storied careers in modern movie history, a career that casts a long shadow, especially within the Western genre that made his name. Likewise, Hugh Jackman's turn as Wolverine is perhaps one of the most iconic portrayals of a superhero. With over two decades and multiple films, Wolverine (aka Logan) and the X-Men films were instrumental in revitalizing the modern superhero film boom that we now are claiming fatigue over, with that era of films culminating with Logan, a film that owes a debt to Clint Eastwood's magnum opus, Unforgiven.

Actor Matthew Lawrence opened the April 28 episode of his Brotherly Love podcast on a serious note, reflecting on the #MeToo movement and his own experience with sexual harassment in Hollywood.
On the show, co-hosted by his brothers, fellow actors Joey and Andrew Lawrence, the 43-year-old actor recounts his experience refusing to engage with a director involved with a Marvel project, who asked Lawrence to take his clothes off during a meeting.
“There’s been many times in my life where I’ve been propositioned to get a huge role,” Lawrence says on the podcast. “I lost my agency because I went to the hotel room” where, the actor alleges, a prominent director “showed up in his robe, asked me to take my clothes off, said he needed to take Polaroids of me and said if I did X, Y and Z, I would be the next Marvel character.”

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we take a look at an Oscars category from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winner stands the test of time.)
Let's go back a few years to the 88th Academy Awards in 2016. Todd McCarthy's investigative journalist drama "Spotlight" took home Best Picture, but it was by no means a dominant force that evening. "Mad Max: Fury Road" walked away with the most awards that night with six, and "The Revenant" took home three, including Best Director and Best Actor. The only other award "Spotlight" won was for Best Original Screenplay. In the last ten years, it's the only film to win Best Picture with that low of an awards total.
Only three movies have won Best Picture without winning anything else, and they all came in the 1930s. It first happened at the 2nd Academy Awards with "The Broadway Melody...

Editor's note: The following contains spoilers for Evil Dead Rise. You know things are getting real in Evil Dead Rise, 2023's gory addition to the Evil Dead family, when an elevator fills with blood. Despite the fact that this entry isn't directed by originator Sam Raimi, longtime fans will likely feel his spirit most strongly here at the film's bloody conclusion. The entirety of Evil Dead Rise is undeniably entertaining, with terrifying visuals, great special effects, and performances that are sure to be iconic — but there's a certain all-out sensibility in its ultimate battle that best echoes the style of the original movies. While Evil Dead Rise does change some of the elements that made its predecessors famous, including focusing on a family instead of a group of adults, its soul is just as demonic. Bloody, gross, and fantastically maximalist, Evil Dead Rise does doesn't disappoint, especially in its final act.
