Direct Hiring Authority
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is at the heart of a national effort to create a modern, integrated, response-ready public health infrastructure to help protect communities from emerging and future health challenges. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has authorized direct hire authority (DHA) to the CDC to fill mission-critical occupations rapidly.
CDC DHA positions are listed on USAJobs.gov as public notices and some are open for multiple U.S. locations, telework, and remote work. Each job posting functions as a repository of applications. Applications from this résumé database may periodically be referred to hiring managers both during the open period and after the closing date. Because of the large number of applications anticipated, applicants’ status will not be updated. See below to learn more about available CDC immediate hire occupations and process.
Qualifications
Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower GS level for which they are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
For specific occupational series qualifications, see links to Office of Personnel Management qualification standards below:

Additional Information
To meet critical hiring needs, CDC may appoint qualified U.S. citizens at all domestic and foreign locations at the GS-1 through GS-15 grade levels and equivalency to term and permanent appointments in the competitive service. Positions may be open to both current CDC employees and the general public. Some positions are remote work opportunities, based on the CDC’s Workplace Flexibilities Policy.
These non-competitive appointments are subject to public notice requirements and will be advertised in a manner that provides for diverse and qualified applicants. CDC will satisfy public notification requirements by posting these positions via:
-
- USAJOBS
- HHS.GOV/CAREERS
- CDC.GOV/CAREERS and/or
- Third-party recruitment boards (i.e., CDCLinkedIn)
Applications received as a result of job fairs, recruitment events, and emergency hiring mechanisms in support of this hiring initiative will also be accepted during the duration of the DHA.
