Aging action legend Jackie Chan galloped away with another win as his latest action-comedy film Ride On maintained its grip on the top spot of the Chinese box office for the second consecutive weekend. Meanwhile, Universal Pictures’ The Super Mario Bros. Movie struggled to keep up, finishing the frame in fourth place.
According to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, Ride On earned $6 million (RMB41.5 million) for the weekend, representing a respectable 48 percent week-on-week drop from its $11.7 million opening the week prior. The film has already amassed $22.6 million in ticket sales since its release April 7. Ticketing app Maoyan projects a $33 million (RMB230 million) career total for the title.
Coming in second place was iQiyi Pictures’ Hachiko, which added $4.9 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $35.1 million since its release March 31. The film, which is based on the classic Japanese story of a loyal dog who waits for his owner every day at the train station,...

Editor's note: The below contains spoilers for Season 3 of The Mandalorian. The majority of the first two seasons of The Mandalorian gave audiences a perspective of the culture through one of its more extremist clans, the Children of the Watch. It makes sense to introduce audiences to the culture through this clan because they best exemplify the ancient Mandalorian ways. When Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) meets Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), we learn how his clan has broken off from the rest of the Mandalorians and views anyone else wearing the armor as unworthy of being considered true Mandalorians.

It's official: "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" is going to finish its run in theaters as the lowest-grossing entry in the franchise. While that fact had been evident for a few weeks now, it was worth waiting until the final nail was truly put in the coffin to make such a damning declaration -- but here we are. The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe fell all the way to number 24 on the charts at the U.S. box office for April 14-16, 2023, taking in just $44,000, per Box Office Mojo. As its Digital release approaches rapidly this week, that was pretty much its last gasp of air.
While the movie will pad its total out a little before completely finishing its global run, director Peyto Reed's "Quantumania" has earned $466.9 million, and will likely only reach $470 million by the time it's truly good and done. But that's more or less what we're looking at,...

F. Murray Abraham was conspicuously absent from the latest season of the Apple TV+ video game industry comedy "Mythic Quest." While no reason was given for his departure from the show when it was announced last April, Rolling Stone now reports that Abraham was dismissed from his role in the series after at least two sexual misconduct complaints were made against him.
According to the outlet, the "Moon Knight" and "The White Lotus" actor received a warning after a first incident was reported, and was asked to, in the language of Rolling Stone, "keep away from some of the show's actresses." Abraham was ultimately let go from the series after Rob McElhenney, who co-created the show and stars as game industry guru Ian Grimm, learned about a second incident.
A statement from Lionsgate to Rolling Stone in response to the story doesn't add much to the initial two-sentence statement released last spring.

The trailer has arrived for writer-director Laurel Parmet’s debut feature, The Starling Girl, which will have its limited theatrical release this spring. A favorite from this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the film follows 17-year-old Jem (Eliza Scanlen) as she tries to find her place within a fundamentalist Christian community in rural Kentucky. In an intro ahead of his interview with Parmet and producer Kara Durrett out of Sundance, Erik Luers summed up the plot quite nicely: Parmet first began writing the screenplay in 2017, soon after the premiere of one of her shorts and the wrap of another. Like her previous work, The […]

Not to be confused with an adaptation of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” comedy troupe Broken Lizard’s “Quasi” tells a story that’s truer to the Oxford definition of its title than the 1831 Victor Hugo novel that inspired it. Kevin Heffernan settles uneasily into the director’s seat usually occupied by colleague Jay Chandrasekhar for an underdog story more interested in leveraging funny pronunciations of French words for underwhelming laughs than in creating real characters — much less a visual backdrop that doesn’t look like a second-rate Renaissance Faire.
Set in a 13th Century France that narrator and sometime Broken Lizard collaborator Brian Cox helpfully informs us “sucked,” the film centers on Quasimodo (Steve Lemme), a social outcast who works in the torture chambers of King Guy (Chandrasekhar). There, in a search for a cure to his own physical deformity, he develops the hottest, most pain-inducing device on the market,...

F. Murray Abraham has been accused of sexual misconduct, reportedly leading to his “Mythic Quest” exit.
Rolling Stone published a report claiming that the “White Lotus” Season 2 actor was at the center of two complaints. Per the outlet, the first incident led to Abraham being given a warning and told to keep away from some of the show’s actresses, according to a production source. A second incident was brought to “Mythic Quest” creator and star Rob McElhenney, who reportedly decided to have Abraham exit the Apple TV+ series ahead of its third season.
At the time, Abraham’s exit was addressed by McElhenney to Variety, saying, “It’s a bummer to not have Murray in this season. But we recognize that [his character] C.W. is a beloved character and obviously a huge part of the show. So, we made sure that we have a really fitting tribute to him. We...

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we circle back to Jackie Chan's stunt-acular action classic, "Police Story.")
Before Jackie Chan ever crossed the shores of the American mainstream during his Hollywood heyday in the 1990s, the actor/director/stuntman extraordinaire had been hard at work in Hong Kong cinema, churning out hit after hit for decades in his native country. One of his most memorable successes came only a scant handful of years before he finally crossed over into global appeal: 1985's "Police Story," directed by and starring Chan as Chan Ka-Kui, followed the rogue cop on his relentless quest to take down a drug lord, babysit a key witness played by Maggie Cheung, and subsequently clear his own name after being framed by his powerful enemies

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” soared higher than expected in its second weekend of release.
The animated adventure, from Universal and Illumination, collected $92 million over the weekend, above Sunday’s already huge estimate of $87 million. Those returns rank as the highest-grossing second weekend for an animated film, as well as the seventh-highest grossing second weekend for any film at the domestic box office, according to Universal.
Thanks to huge demand from family audiences and plenty of nostalgia, ticket sales for “Mario” declined only 37% from its mighty $146 million three-day start and currently stand at $353 million. That’s especially impressive because big-budget blockbusters — even well-received ones — generally plummet by 50% or more after scoring huge opening weekends.
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” also notched a significant global milestone, crossing $700 million after just 13 days of release. So far, only 12 Hollywood releases have managed to surpass the $700 million mark since the pandemic. “Mario” currently stands...

It was a big weekend for new releases at the box office, with "Renfield" and "The Pope's Exorcist" giving the horror crowd a lot to chew on, "Suzame" finally arriving in North America for anime lovers, and "Mafia Mamma" trying (and failing badly) to give us a viable action/comedy. But far and above all of those was "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which absolutely obliterated the competition in its second weekend. So much so that it now stands alone as the highest-grossing movie of 2023 overall after less than two weeks in theaters.

Though by no means the most popular of shows in the vast streaming landscape, it became a bit of a sleeper hit and boasted being the most-viewed original series premiere on what was formerly known as Epix, now relaunched as MGM+. Now entering its second season, it is still anchored by a strong lead performance by the great Harold Perrineau as it explores more of its characters both new and old as well as the mysterious forces that have trapped all of them in this town. In the first five episodes of the ten-episode second season shared with critics, the show thrives best when it gives room to the growing tensions that are starting to bubble over. Although it...

With "Spirited Away: Live on Stage," Tony Award-winning theater director John Caird took on the risky yet rewarding creative challenge of adapting one of the most beloved animated films ever made. To date, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's original animated version of "Spirited Away" remains the only non-English language film to win an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Just last year, it made Sight and Sound's once-a-decade list of the greatest movies of all time.
Fortunately, "Spirited Away: Live on Stage" had an asset in Caird, who originated the long-running "Les Misérables" stage adaptation in London and now serves as honorary associate director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. When "Spirited Away: Live on Stage" premiered last March in Japan, it was able to immediately sidestep any concerns about doing Miyazaki's film justice with the release of several eye-catching images, showing what Caird and collaborators like puppetry designer Toby Olié had accomplished.

Representation for Asian actors increased in TV and film between 2021 and 2022, according to a study of how casting and crew for scripted live-action content has changed over the past two years.
The Entertainment Diversity Progress Report was conducted by Luminate, a subsidiary of Pme TopCo., a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge. Following the 2021 study, the 2022 report found intersectionality has increased on screen, with Hollywood making strides toward depicting people with multiple identities across race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality and ability. Additionally, the study discovered a rapid increase in non-English language content available in the U.S., fueled by streaming platforms. “Netflix is having an outsized impact on this representation,” the study concluded, “However, this doesn’t fix the problem of lack of diverse domestic casting.”

In all seriousness, the visually-challenged specter remains one of the biggest mysteries of Showtime's captivating horror/thriller puzzle box series part-way through its second season. Is he merely the psychological manifestation of Taissa's childhood trauma from her grandmother claiming she could see a being with no eyes shortly before her death? This was also the first time Taissa glimpsed him, although we've no idea if her grandmother saw the same individual or someone else. He's continued to haunt Taissa in season 2's '90s flashbacks, seemingly guiding her to trees with that mysterious symbol carved into them. But does he actually exist outside of Taissa's imagination? And if so, what is he ultimately after?

With all the confusion between Max and HBO Max and whatever Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming plans are, one thing remains certain - nobody is doing it quite like HBO when it comes to original programming. They have been on a dream run recently with shows like House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, Succession, and The White Lotus, and their rich catalog feature some of the most iconic limited series like Watchmen and Chernobyl. So the idea of the master filmmaker Park Chan-wook and actor-producer Robert Downey Jr. adapting a Pulitzer-winning novel for HBO is nothing short of ecstatic.

The cinematic world of Sonic the Hedgehog continues to expand, as production began today on the television spin-off focused on Knuckles, the explosive character voiced by Idris Elba. After being introduced to Sonic and his friends during the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Knuckles is set to live out his own adventure, where he'll get to know his own group of secondary characters before the franchise returns to the big screen next year. Behind the scenes, some familiar faces will be returning to this world, as the same crew that has worked on the two movies will also be a part of this spin-off.

Without a platform to call its own, Sony is the arms dealer of the streaming wars. It made a deal last year to provide movies and programming to Netflix that includes everything from “Spider-Man” and “Morbius” to “Cobra Kai” and “The Night Agent.” However, it’s still possible that Sony has a major player in the streaming wars — and no, we’re not talking about buying Crackle back from Chicken Soup for the Soul. You might have heard of it: PlayStation.
PlayStation, of course, is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 28-year-old brand devoted to kitting out the world’s gamers with consoles, Aaa games, and even VR. All those platforms, titles, and loyal users give it a very, very big head start in cloud gaming… which may also be the next major frontline for streaming dominance.

On the heels of Harry Styles’ highly publicized pivot to acting and Taylor Swift’s already-infamous cameo in David O. Russell’s latest flop “Amsterdam,” another major pop star is throwing their hat in the acting ring. Abel Tesfaye, better known to his fans as The Weeknd, broke into the music scene in the early 2010s with a distinctive persona built around moody, atmospheric soul and R&b.

Now well-known for his previous two features, Hereditary and Midsommar, filmmaker Ari Aster returns to theaters with the Joaquin Phoenix-led Beau Is Afraid. From the trailers alone, Aster’s third film gives bizarre, disturbing vibes, but they don’t quite scream horror, as the auteur is currently known for. In a group interview including Collider’s Editor-in-Chief, Steve Weintraub, Aster and Phoenix share a few details that help pinpoint where exactly on the cinematic map this odyssey lands.

AMC+ is joining the streaming-advertising party; Don Draper would say it’s about time.
The core AMC Networks streaming platform will have an ad-supported tier “by October,” according to a Monday morning media announcement. A person with knowledge of the plans told IndieWire we won’t on AVOD AMC+ until “much closer to launch day;” that will come in September, according to our source. AMC+ currently costs $8.99 per month.
Tomorrow is AMC Networks’ 2023 upfront, which is when AMC+ with ads will begin selling commercial time. AMC Network will report its first-quarter 2023 earnings the morning of May 5.
AMC’s “targeted” SVODs will remain ad-free services completely supported by subscription revenue — with a notable exception. AMC+ subscribers get Shudder, IFC Films Unlimited, and Sundance Now for free; those who select AVOD AMC+ will also see commercials in their three freebie add-on services.
All told, AMC Networks ended 2022 with 11.8 million streaming subscribers.

In a rare new interview while promoting his performance in Zach Braff’s “A Good Person,” Morgan Freeman told The Sunday Times that he’s insulted by Black History Month and the term “African American.”
“Two things I can say publicly that I do not like,” Freeman said. “Black History Month is an insult. You’re going to relegate my history to a month?”
“Also, ‘African American’ is an insult,” he added. “I don’t subscribe to that title. Black people have had different titles all the way back to the n-word and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses ‘African American’. What does it really mean? Most Black people in this part of the world are mongrels. And you say Africa as if it’s a country when it’s a continent, like Europe.”

Twenty-five years ago, before they made their seminal cop comedy "Super Troopers," comedy troupe Broken Lizard were tossing around ideas based on a character who was a lovable loser who managed to become a hero. Fast-forward to today, and those ideas have solidified in the form of "Quasi," a satirical take on "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" that traps hunchback Quasimodo (Steve Lemme) in a battle between the King of France (Jay Chandrasekhar) and the Pope (Paul Soter). If you ever wanted to see the guys behind "Beerfest" and "Club Dread" tackle medieval history with their unique brand of sweet stoner humor, then "Quasi" is the flick for you, and it's hitting Hulu on April 20, 2023, just in time for the holiest of pot-smoking holidays.

Lily-Rose Depp is the biggest pop star on the planet in “The Idol.”

The series makes its world debut at this year’s Cannes out of competition.
Per the official synopsis, after a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Some post-apocalypses feature terrible diseases that wipe out humanity, and as seen in “The Last of Us,” turn folks into mindless mushroom monsters. Well, “Sweet Tooth” is a bit different. Not only does the post-apocalypse bring a disease that turns the dead into beautiful flowers (though still deadly), but there are also really adorable animal-human hybrid children. So, yeah, people die, but there is also a lot of cuteness.

At what point does it become a trend? After Netflix announced its ad-supported tier last year, and the upcoming mega-streaming service Max (still to debut) was announced to include ad-supported pricing tiers, it seems inevitable that more streaming services will follow in including ad-supported tiers in their pricing structure. And it looks like AMC+ has become the latest streaming service to adopt the tiered pricing model, according to a Deadline report. AMC Networks has announced that it will add a cheaper, ad-supported tier to its flagship streaming service AMC+. The new pricing tier is expected to be rolled out later this year, though no exact date was released.

Plan B’s new owner Mediawan is pursuing its buying spree with the acquisition of a majority stake in the Emmy Award-winning company Submarine. The Amsterdam-based company develops and produces international scripted series and feature films and documentaries, and owns the largest animation studio in the Netherlands.

Video Game adaptations used to receive a bad rap, but after the recent successes of titles like The Super Mario Bros Movie, The Last of Us, and Arcane it's been proven that they can work if they have the right creative team. Warner Brothers and Mojang have changed teams repeatedly over the years since first announcing their plans for a Minecraft film in 2014. The film has gone through many different iterations and multiple directors were attached before ultimately departing the project, that is until now. With a director, an A-list star, and a release date in place it sounds like things are finally coming together for the long-delayed and much-reworked Minecraft movie.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 4, Episode 2, “Bestest Place on the Earth.”]
“Barry” has a way of pushing its characters to distinct places. So often, over the seasons, the anxiety that comes from clutching for any available option means that everyone has to put on a performance. It started with a wayward hitman wandering into a theater and picking up a love for black box productions. It’s also manifested in different people pretending to love someone or projecting an image of dangerousness.
And sometimes, that desire to perform makes you deliver a shipping enterprise pitch to a room full of henchmen who’ve just finished an afternoon filled with Skee-Ball and branded arcade games. All of the above are part of “Barry” Season 4’s mass existential crisis event. Still setting the table for the beginning of the end, “Bestest Place on the Earth” is a collection of people locking in their last-ditch efforts to make their lives make sense. Some are out of necessity.
