Michael Cunningham Sings Leonard Cohen
The Pulitzer Prize-winning author pays homage to Montreal’s patron saint, crooning the artist’s 1967 ballad ‘‘Suzanne,’’ with the musician Cassandra Jenkins on guitar.
[music] My name is Michael Cunningham. I am a writer, not a singer. I was 15, and an older, much cooler friend played me Leonard Cohen. I didn’t know music could sound like that. (SINGING) You can hear the boats go by. You can spend the night forever. And I feel like the defiant, ferocious, mournful, gorgeous music that he produced is, in some ways, the voice of Montreal, the place that produced him. (SINGING) And you want to travel blind. And you know she will trust you, for you’ve touched her perfect body with your mind. “Suzanne” is as perfect as I need a song to be. It’s full of melancholy and hope, and Jesus Christ plays a supporting role. I mean, what’s not to like about a song like that?
