That bokeh is awful.

I have no idea what sort of resources Nikon has, and if the development of this lens makes any economical sense, or logical sense for the Z roadmap. However, I praise Nikon for making products that at times are there more to remind us what photography is supposed to be: creativity and art before of business.

Back in the days, one of the virtues of the photography model was being static.

Some great examples of how people pose when they have been told how shallow the DoF is.

all is correct - Zeiss Otus 55 is 1kg and cost about 4000 USD, this one is about 2kg and then cost 2x4000=8000. This is a calculation by Nikon's marketing managers for set the price.

Most of these shots are great examples how to NOT use a 50mmish lens...
The closer portraits would be way nicer with a longer focal length and the wider ones would easy be possible with a 85mm.

If you like big lenses you could use Sigmas 105/1.4 😉 or Sonys new 135/1.8 for similar blure.

Of course there are good uses for such a fast lens- hope we see some more samples soon 😉

Lots of bokeh (axial) CA -- green behind, magenta in front. Also vignettes heavily at all the aperture settings shown (maybe ok by f/2.8?). Can't really tell about off-axis performance because focus is only on the center in these shots. It doesn't have the SA that old ultra-fast lenses have, but otherwise I think I prefer the rendering from my old Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.2... the photos are nice, but don't look like they needed an $8K lens.

The images are super flat for the price and the hype!

Nikon's mirrorless marketing campaign was focussed (sorry) around this lens and the supposed superior light gathering power of the mount, but the lens wasn't available at the launch.

Do we suppose that Nikon's mirrorless system launch was brought forward a year or that there were manufacturing issues with production lenses that delayed their release?

I note that the sample pictures of the lens at the launch looked exactly the same as the production lens.

I haven't seen any speculation one way or the other.

Undoubtedly, this lens is a great technical achievement. However, from a photographic point of view, how remarkable are the images shown in relation to the same pictures taken, for example, with an F2 lens?

I dare say that the chance of getting a really extraordinary portrait is much higher when using F2 than F0.95.

Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct $7,996.95 is not for professionals. It is for amateurs seeking prestige lenses.

This is a good demonstration of how ridiculously difficult it is to properly use a lens like this. With AF and a good EyeAF implementation this could be a killer solution. But for most this lens wide open will be one massive frustration. It does appear to be pretty sharp for an f/0.95 lens, but my suspicion is most people will get similar results with the much cheaper third party options on the market, simply because they will be unlikely to nail focus to realize that extra sharpness....

This is a missed opportunity by Nikon.... designing an $8000 f/0.95 lens without AF. A curious choice.

You can tell those models were instructed not to move a cm when the shutter was about to be pressed, they take poses that allows them to remain still more easily and still look uncomfortable.

It would be interesting to put this lens head-to-head against the RF 50mm f/1.2L and see if there is a substantial difference generated by the extra focal length and light. I'll need to see more images to really stop squinting at my screen and scratching my head.

I honestly wish DP would punk all the "Noct-sniffers" by posting a samples gallery using the old 35-70 2.8D or similar lens. Most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference based on pictures like this.

I don't like the cat eye light bokeh in the corners. But sharp it is. Models have learned not to move between focussing and shutter release.

This lens will.give you a look you just can’t get anywhere else. It is a master piece for creatives. Super high price so I won’t be buying one but I can’t wait to see what some very talented people will be doing with it.

very nice photos! I dont think this lens fits in my price range or style lol. a bit to much dof and separation for my liking.

I own a Noctilux 0.95 (which I love), but this lens, as I expected, outperforms it, it's like a Noctilux with steroids. However, I would still keep the Leica because of the size/weight.

Thank goodness Nikon is finally putting the finishing touches on the Z mount lens lineup with this lens. It's not like this is a new mount with very few lenses or anything.
